Public or Packet[edit]

There appears to be some confusion or contradiction between the sources about whether the acronym is Public Switched Data Network or Packet Switched Data network.

To give two examples

Telecommunication Switching Systems and Networks By V.S.Bagad uses "public"

Focal Illustrated Dictionary of Telecommunications By Xerxes Mazda, Fraidoon Mazda and Network Management: Concepts and Tools use "packet"

Meanwhile Data and Computer Communications: Networking and Internetworking By Gurdeep S. Hura, Mukesh Singhal uses the phrase "public packet switched data network!"

I get the impression, but struggle to find evidence, that at some point in the past A PARTICULAR packet switched data network became "THE" public one, and gained some capital letters as a definite noun. This seems to have led to the prior Talk discussion about capitalisation too.

Thoughts? I'll go ahead and comment on the discrepancy in the article because it's confusing as it stands - changing from one to the other halfway through the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leiafee (talkcontribs) 14:24, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Public switched data network -> Public Switched Data Network

Per WP:CAPS and WP:TITLE: this is a proper noun referring to the single, worldwide and internationally standardized public switched data network. It does not refer to a general class of data networks that happen to be switched and public. — Dgtsyb (talk) 22:45, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. This is not a proper name. The article itself shows that it is indeed a general term for entities of a certain class: "A public switched data network (PSDN) is a publicly-available packet-switched network, ...".
Neither WP:CAPS nor WP:TITLE gives support to this RM.

  • Oppose - Not a proper name, public switched data network is just a concept. Stick with the MoS - no need for an exception here. Jojalozzo 02:13, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Joja. Tony (talk) 04:31, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
