Hot keys[edit]

I am not certain but I understood that some of the hot keys defined in staroffice/starwriter have been carried over to general use in other editors/applications?

Operating system[edit]

On what operating systems did SO originally run?

According to de:StarOffice: Windows, OS/2, Mac--Hhielscher 01:41, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

<rant> Sun is sooooo protective of the logo for StarOffice that there is not even one on their StarOffice product page. The only example of it is on their special logo page with a light grey "Sample" watermark across it (see [1]). To use the logo you have to submit an application where you that you will abide by the usage guidelines that are on at least three different pages! I'd try to scarf up a logo somewhere off of the internet, except that a quick Google image search suggests that nobody has jumped through all of the hoops to get the approval to use the logo. I could do what several other websites have done, which is to grab the photo of the product box from the StarOffice product page, but right now I'm so pissed at Sun for making it hard to use their logo, that I'd rather not. </rant> BlankVerse 13:41, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What typefaces?[edit]

  • several font metric compatible Unicode TrueType fonts containing bitmap representations for better appearance at smaller font sizes
  • 12 Western fonts and 7 Asian language fonts (including support for the Hong Kong Supplementary character set)

Please add the names of the fonts and link them if they already have an article of their own (see List of typefaces).--Hhielscher 14:57, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So far I added the fonts that come with the Linux version in English.--Hhielscher 16:54, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adabas[edit]

Does Star Office still include Adabas? It now includes the Base component, which I would imagine usurps the role (formerly) played by Adabas. Rwxrwxrwx 10:17, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah they still do; at least in my latest v8. - xpclient Talk 10:15, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is StarOffice still free?[edit]

Looks to me like they charge around $70 for this now...but doing a google search for "Free Staroffice" gives a link that allows you to download the same for free...i'm confused —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.22.83.195 (talkcontribs)

The History section doesn't make it very clear, but the free version of StarOffice was only offered Sun for about a year. The free open source version of StarOffice is now available as OpenOffice.org. BlankVerse 03:38, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

StarOffice can be downloaded free of charge as part of the Google Pack. Joshua Issac (talk) 10:17, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Vs. Open Office?[edit]

Should something like this section be added to this page?: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org#StarOffice It mentions it builds off the OpenOffice code, but doesnt mention what the differences are between them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 61.68.101.187 (talkcontribs)

It could probably be better highlighted, but in the Features section, after "Proprietary components in StarOffice that are not in OpenOffice.org include:" is the list of differences. BlankVerse 08:26, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

StarOffice based on OpenOffice.org?[edit]

Hello!

StarOffice is Sun Microsystems' proprietary office suite software package. It is based on the free software/open-source OpenOffice.org, and contains some additional features.

Isn't it the opposite (OOo based on StarOffice)? --212.27.60.48 23:28, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found the answer in the OpenOffice.org article. I should have read further before asking, sorry. --212.27.60.48 23:32, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That answer is "yes, it's the opposite". I've changed the intro here to that effect. RossPatterson 01:23, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As of today, it still reads that SO is based on OO, while the OO page says that OO is based on SO. Which is right? --Jfruh (talk) 16:51, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The correct answer is that OOo is derived from StarOffice, but that StarOffice is now based on OpenOffice. I've tidied the OOo lead to reflect this. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 17:03, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I liked your change to the OOo lead so much, I adapted it for the lead to this article -- I think the relationship needs to be made clear up front, and your encapsulation of it was crystal clear. --Jfruh (talk) 21:12, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:StarOffice Logo.gif[edit]

Image:StarOffice Logo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 07:32, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OS/2[edit]

IBM included StarOffice with OS/2 Warp 3.0, did they not? I'm almost certain I remember it being on a set of extra floppies called something like "Bonus Pak". 74.194.87.88 22:40, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No; the bonus mini office suite was IBM Works, produced by Footprint Software in Toronto. SmarterAlec (talk) 16:45, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

StarOffice Math/StarMath[edit]

According to the article, StarOffice Math is no longer included in the StarOffice suite. This is not true. In StarOffice 8 (Product Update 9), one can click File>New>Formula to open StarOffice Math. Joshua Issac (talk) 18:44, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's right. Changed it. (soffice -math opens it) Also the article doesn't mention with which version, StarSchedule, StarMail and StarDiscussion were last included, when they were discontinued. Anyone can add that? :) - xpclient Talk 10:26, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AVSoft[edit]

Why is this being mentioned in 'See Also'? Seems like an irrelevant plug that should be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.69.130.6 (talk) 07:54, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thesaurus[edit]

The article implies that there is no thesaurus in OpenOffice.org (see Features -> Proprietary components -> 8th bullet point). My suggestion: "A different spell checker and thesaurus (note that OpenOffice.org includes a spell checker and thesaurus as well)" Doenster (talk) 00:23, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Detailed timeline on de: version[edit]

de:StarOffice has a detailed timeline, though annoyingly sparse on references - David Gerard (talk) 14:57, 18 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

History section is a bad joke[edit]

"From this time onwards"... that was when? Or are actual years irrelevant in a History section? --jae (talk) 12:46, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

CPC family[edit]

I have recherched for the CPC programme versions (Schneider). I did not find any reference to version "1.0", but the program is called "Star-Writer I" (Roman numeric I) in 1995. One year later there was the version "Star-Writer I 3.0" (Manual 3.0 as scan at cpcszene.de) and the same year the version 3.1 (screenshot at cpc-power.com). So there is a somewhat confusing version description, which has changed by the migration from CPC "Star-Writer I" to DOS version "StarWriter 3.2", but what was the correct name or version for Atari version(s)? Actually there ist a discussion to the Schneider versions on the disc-page on german Wiki article. Please help in the search for better and more sources. --H7 (talk) 11:10, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
