Hello
you recently edited the RFD page to take down redflagdeals.com as spam because it didn't have an Alexa rank.
i don't mind the edit as I was just having a little fun w/ my mates at redflagdeals.com when i put that down
but I wonder, what's Alexa?
I went to alexa.com and looked up redflagdeals.com, and it ranked it 5,052. So what did you base your edit on?

Your message[edit]

  1. Always remember to sign (~~~~) your messages — it took me a while to track you down.
  2. I'm not sure what you mean by your first point; why do you find it ungainly, exactly?
  3. There is a private system in a way — e-mail. If you've got your e-mail set up (on the preferences page), any user can send you an e-mail without knowing your address.
On the other hand, this is an open, collaborative project, so we'd not want too much to be going on behind closed doors.
  4. I don't know of a plan to make table-creation easier (though it could be, you're right). Try the village pump — there might be something about it there. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 17:50, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. Well, first, the hopping around is optional; some users prefer to reply to messages on their own Talk page, so that discussions are all in one place. Moreover, most discussions take place on article-Talk pages. You can place a message at the top of your Talk page saying that you'll always reply to messages here.
Secondly, I don't frequent discussion boards, so I'm not really au fait with all that. Again, it's the sort of thing you might suggest at the village pump. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 18:27, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Congress pages[edit]

hey - i saw your note on the Congress page. i got that info from house.gov. i was going to add that info for every missing page, but there is a project dedicated to these Congress pages. but it may be a dead project. i haven't heard from any of its participants tho. so whatever. i could do the profile and leadership parts, but they need events, and state rep's names. both can probably be found and copied from house.gov also, but i haven't looked yet. there is more info on what the Congress pages "should" contain and look like @ the project page.

why?[edit]

Why are you unhappy? Just wondering. Zantastik 04:29, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, I hope you're feeling better -- I mean this quite seriously. To the point, I think that the articles like Feminine Beauty & the USA Popular Media will need to be throughly edited or deleted. I'm very reluctant to just delete them -- after all, her project is a good one, if it's modified. However, she doesn't answer her email, and it's been weeks. Let's give it another week, and perhaps you could email her too just to give it a second shot. Thanks for your help with this. --Zantastik 04:09, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Germania (airline)[edit]

Hello Lotsofissues! You removed my reference to the original text in the German Wikipedia. I thinks that this reference is necessary because of the GNU-Licence, which says (in my view) that we have to give an advice to the writer(s) of an article. I'm not the writer, I only translated it, the writers are people in the German Wikipedia. If I am not right, please tell me on my user talk page.Mg22 12:20, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Olympic Articles[edit]

Hi, Where are you copying your info from? Lotsofissues 07:04, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The archery information is coming mostly from the International Archery Federation. Their website is here - [1]. Records information comes from olympic.org along with medals history. I also have been using David Wallechinsky's Complete Book of the Olympics for some rules minutiae and other such information I haven't been able to find elsewhere. If you know of a source that has results for the 1988 team competitions (FITA only gives individual for that year, and Wallechinsky only has the top 8), that would be very helpful. -- Jonel 19:19, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. Is any of the material such as from olympic.org protected? Lotsofissues
Well, all of my sources are copyrighted. However, I am not copy/pasting from any of them. If you take a look at, say, the 1988 individual results on archery.org and compared that to the WP page, you'll see a huge difference in the presentation. I am using facts obtained from the sources, not re-using their presentation (which would be a violation of copyright law). For more information, please see the articles on copyright, especially idea-expression divide. -- Jonel 20:48, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for catching the 'geneticist copyright violator anon' (as I like to call him/her) in the act again. I have blocked both IPs, one had just come off a block! If you catch them at it again please leave a message on my talk page.--nixie 11:25, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Survey help[edit]

Hey! I'm about ready to do that online interview thing you volunteered for. It shouldn't take long; just a few minutes hopefully. I guess since you're in a very different time-zone from me (I'm in the UK) it'll need to be a late night or early morning for me to catch you online! What times are you usually available? I'll keep an eye out when I'm online in the early hours though. — PMcM 22:39, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi: You flagged Titanic (1997 film) as being cited in Harvard Journal of Law & Technology. Please could you mention which issue/page of the journal contains the citation. Thanks. --Theo (Talk) 09:45, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

You seem to have duplicated the effort of Template:Source. You're not alone in this, since we also have Template:Onlinesource, Template:Onlinesource2005 and Template:Authoronlinesource2005! Of all these templates, though, yours is the newest and most different-looking, and doesn't seem to add anything new. Consider using the existing templates instead; this facilitates easier lookup through "what links here", and also decreases the effort needed to get a consistent look (or at least prevent the worst visual clashes). In that vein, you might also be interested in Wikipedia:Template standardisation. Cheers! JRM 10:35, 2005 Apr 20 (UTC)

Sure it's important - but 250x100px is more than large enough for a banner. Besides I don't see why we need such a large image - or in fact - an image at all. ed g2stalk 13:20, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The dreaded infringer[edit]

Hi, I've deleted the copyvio again, I'll keep an eye on this IP too, this guy sure gets around. Thanks again--nixie 23:36, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

adding reasons to speedy[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you added a brief message to an article explaining why you were putting it up for speedy delete. The most convenient way of doing this is by typing {{db|reason}}. "db" stands for "Delete because". Thanks for your help patrolling recent changes. Cheers, BanyanTree 03:30, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

A VP / "new suggestions" beat[edit]

Sounds like a lovely idea. Could you draft an example column this weekend for the next issue? Other places you might look for suggestions : Talk:Main Page, Wikipedia talk:Community Portal, Wikipedia mailing list archive, WikiEN list archive +sj + 15:41, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. I picked up on that after a while. LOL

A Midsummer Night's Dream[edit]

Sure thing, Lotsofissues,

I took the info re: the Berkeley wedding from the 'Riverside Shakespeare: 2nd Edition (1997)'. On page 82, it gives a probable chronology of the plays, and under MSND it says, "Much of that recent criticism favors the Sir Thomas Berkeley-Elizabeth Carey wedding of February, 1596"

Hope this helps-

Yours, Relarity

UCSD article[edit]

Good job scaling back the admissions-office style raving of the academics on the article, but I wonder if you're not skewing it too far in the opposite direction? UCSD is a pretty competitive school, and frequently competitive with CAL and UCLA in some programs. Sorry to hear you're so unhappy @ UCSD. I've really enjoyed it. UCSD article, part deux[edit]

Thanks.

No, i think the yield info is cool enough, although you'll probably want to fix it up a tiny bit, eh? There are a few loose links. =)

I do't think it is nonsense and I personally believe that it is a fun addition to the entry. The web-site is already similar to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, it would be a fun reference. I will stop from now on, but I really wish you would take the time to consider my request. Thanks,

  • Hey just a heads up! Great job removing that silly propaganda for ERC in the UCSD article. You rock!Elefuntboy 22:54, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Template:Introduction1 and while you are at it protect Template:Please don't change this page and Template:Please don't edit this page until he slows down, talks about his changes and uses a sandbox more effectively for complex edits. I just wanted to let you know a seperate article was created, Express Mail which I redirected to Express mail. I moved the content to the talk page. User:Humanbot update 08 June 2005[edit]

Version two-two released today includes in that green box a nice count of how many articles are left. This more or less co-incides with the event of hitting only 1000 articles remaining. Also, I have re-arranged the User:Humanbot page to make it easier to get to the right stuff. Progress charts, wikicookies, wikilove and a more thorough spelling check is promised when this is completed. (and also when the exam pressure eases off a little on me) r3m0t talk 17:39, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC) Note: If you think this message was too trivial for a mailing, tell me and I'll stick to more important announcements on the list.

Sheila Scott[edit]

Hello Lotsofissues - I believe that you have also sent a message under your own name to the DNB.

As you may see from the DNB sources list, we did check Sheila Scott's birth certificate - the details of her birth, including the date, are taken directly from there, and confirm 1922.

I disagree with the proposal that this page be deleted. This was a highly publicized news story when it occurred. If one were to do a Google search under "Michael Lohman", there are still literally dozens of references to his alleged crimes.

Furthermore, I don't see how this entry is "discriminatory". The description already uses the phrases "Police reports state..." and "Police say...". Therefore, it is clear that his actions, at this point in time, are merely alleged based on official police statements.

What am I supposed to have added, if I may ask?

Varian v. Delfino[edit]

I'm glad that I'm not the only one noticing all the spamming. I have been seeing links to the "Be careful who you SLAPP" website popping up all over the place, so it seems this has been going on for a while now. Honestly, I don't know how big the case was in California so I'm hesitant to remove some of the references to it. However, knowing that there is support against it, I hope to be more diligent in removing the stuff in the future. Cheers. - PullUpYourSocks 16:19, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hey. :) How is the vandalism at Grover Norquist related to the Delfino thing? kmccoy (talk) 21:04, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

User:Humanbot update 13 June 2005[edit]

The spelling2 project (to work on secondary namespaces) was opened and finished. Progress charts will be available soon.

Version six-three tracks who made the edits, and rankings are available. Much of the work was done while I was asleep, explaining my low place ;).

The next project, which may even be released today, will probably fix incorrectly capitalised headings, particularly "See Also" and "External Links".

The mailing list has grown to 24 people and while that is very nice for my ego, it is rather difficult to send out updates. This is why I did not send out a notice that the spelling2 project had opened. From now on, then, you must watch User:Humanbot/announce for updates. r3m0t talk 12:03, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)

Follow-up to discussion on "Rouge State"[edit]

Thank you for your comments. I shall re-evaluate my reason for flagging "Rouge State" as NPOV and if I find that it should stay I will document it thoroughly or otherwise remove it.

Follow-up on Computer Security Articles[edit]

Dear Lotsofissues, Thank you for your comments on my talk page. I shall leave everything related to wireless as-is pending a decision regarding the copyright. I was under the impression that since some authors quoted sources that were also copyright, it would be OK to use their derivative work. Sometimes I am under the impression that people automatically get their articles copyrighted by the mere fact that their articles are hosted on a big website portal which automatically displays a copyright warning, when in fact the article conserning security should be widely circulated and quoted in as many places as possible. However, one must respect the copyright laws no matter what one thinks about them and hope that in the future people will understand that in most cases, copyrighting a website is counter-productive. --Bjornar 13:10, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Did you know?[edit]

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Pyongyang Film Festival, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. Policy violation[edit]

Hi,

Copyright Violations are not candidates for Speedy Deletion. Please avoid violating Wikipedia policy. If you recall any other instances of policy violation, please amend those pages.

Regards, Rj 06:07, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

Raising the level of hostility, intentional or otherwise, also reflects poorly on the site (especially to those who use it most). Please use a bit more consideration in the future.

Need Guidance on Length[edit]

My research on cats is underway, and I would like some length guidance for this book. 48 pages of what size? How many words total? How many words for each species? For other introductory sections? Lets please target an age range no more than 3 years apart. -- Lotsofissues 03:18, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

My advice, just write what you think is right. We'll edit things before they go to print, but keep the full length versions online. Our grant says we are to write for 8-11-year-olds. -- user:zanimum

Pupa[edit]

The pupa article is fairly typical of many biology-related pages. There are two main directions that such pages tend to move in. The first is a basic description of the topic for students who need help with their homework. Such articles tend to be uninteresting to scientists who actually know something about the topic. The second direction is towards including the types of information that are of interest to scientists. When a few people with scientific training start to take an interest in a wikpedia article, you start to see references and links to on-going research. Biology articles that have not attracted the attention of scientists tend to contain over-simplified generalizations that are technically wrong and ignore the interesting details of the topic. A vague sense of outrage or disgust may be the reaction of many scientists when they see a wikipedia article like pupa for the first time.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Science says, "a good scientific article should be understandable by the "general public", as well as interesting to the scientifically inclined."

I (--Memenen 2 July 2005 03:06 (UTC)) think pages like pupa should have a label like this: {{Science:Needs Help}}

You made me insanely happy[edit]

"I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to correspond with Dr. West so that any remaining errors can be corrected," Xue wrote.

That's you, right? This kind of attitude from Wikipedians makes me insanely happy. Annon[edit]

I'm not a administrator I just posted him at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Where he will be blocked. I just posted the 5th warning becasue it is no different than an admin doing it. Falphin 6 July 2005 01:44 (UTC)

  • If you want him to be blocked longer than two days you can post it here. The administrators' noticeboard according to the AIAV page. I don't think it is neccesary though, because someone else may also use the IP address later on. Falphin 6 July 2005 01:49 (UTC)
    • I agree he is a dumb kid however I meant in the far future. When you asked for an extended block I assumed you wanted a permanent or year long block. Falphin 6 July 2005 01:56 (UTC)

I'm dr. Paret and I'm the owner of the text of NLP Anchor that I have freely distributed to wikpedia and added to it. http://www.snellezen-persoonlijke-ontwikkeling.com/NLP-anchoring.html has my same text, but they report my name at the end of their text as the writer.

I've asked a number of people that were questioning the national significance to review the revised article on their talk pages. I suspect, however, that additional commenting on the VfD page beyond what the two of us have said already may just serve to piss people off so that they delete an important page for spite, but if you can find stuff that can be logically added to the article I think that would be the best action either of us could take now.

I'm glad to have an ally in this though. Good to meet you. Sirmob 7 July 2005 06:02 (UTC)

Well, it survived in the end. Horray.

CP message[edit]

If it's just a workplace, then putting the message there is irrelivant because it's not intended for people to see. There's no reason for putting condolence messages in an editor's workplace. JOHN COLLISON (An Liúdramán) 8 July 2005 22:17 (UTC)

It just doesn't make sense. If this is an "official" wikipedia statement then we are being biased. If not, then it should be posted as a comment somewhere and other people should be equally free to say "I support the attacks". JOHN COLLISON (An Liúdramán) 8 July 2005 22:26 (UTC)
If it's the opinion of editors, it should not go as a comment at the top of the community portal. By all means have a chat on the discussion page, but not on the main CP page. JOHN COLLISON (An Liúdramán) 8 July 2005 22:37 (UTC)

Mushroom VfD[edit]

While I see your point, I'd rather not remove my comment. I do not consider it a personal attack, though I have had other minor comments removed as such in the past. If you want to turn it into "PERSONAL ATTACK REMOVED" (as seems to happen regularly to mild comments in VfD) feel free to. If our main concern is preventing a bunch of morons from going on a vandalism spree we never should have nominated their fansite for deletion in the first place. I sincerely doubt a mild comeback to a lame insult is going to work them into a frenzy if the VfD itself has not. If they want to leave stupid comments on my talk page, as they did with Ril, then they will and I'll likely ignore them. When they realize wikipedia doesn't prominently feature an Italian plumber jumping over turtles they'll forget us an go elsewhere. -R. fiend 02:26, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're overestimating them. We get groups like this all the time, really. Someone puts a site or forum up on VfD and word gets around and a bunch of kids rush in to call everyone a censoring fascist or whatever. They quickly go away, and generally do no more real damage than turning what should be a simple unanimous delete vote into a 50 Kb rant. Meh. I'll keep an eye on their contributions. If I see a lot of vandalism I'll revert and try to find an admin to block, if need be. -R. fiend 02:43, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mushroom Kingdom "Spam Campaign"[edit]

your sig[edit]

The links in your sig (to your user page and user talk page) show as external links. Instead of the "http:" and full URL, these would look more normal and execute more efficiently if you put "User_talk:Lotsofissues" in "[[ ]]" (and the same thing without "_talk"). Barno 15:30, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oops, I submitted this because you made it point to a new section, so I didn't see your explanation above. While I don't find the distinctiveness favorable, and I dislike inefficiency, you can certainly leave it this way if you choose. Barno 15:33, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Law review = academic joke?[edit]

Oh, I disagree. My bankruptcy professor wrote a law review article that was quoted by the Supreme Court last term. It happens. Besides, many profs write a collection of law reviews on one topic, then basically combine them together to make a book - and then the book is what gets cited (because it's more impressive to cite a book than an article). -- BD2412 talk 20:06, July 16, 2005 (UTC)

  • I can't be impartial, I'm getting published in my law review! Seriously, tho, student work is one thing (it usually is kind of a joke), but most LR articles by professors are good scholarship. Maybe they just don't get the attention that they should, particularly given the sharp hierarchy among law schools that rubs off on their journals. -- BD2412 talk 20:47, July 16, 2005 (UTC)

Citation? Where?[edit]

You added a notice to Talk:Analog hole stating that the article had been cited by some Hastings journal. Do you have a URL or any other information on this so it can be backed up? I don't doubt that the article was really cited, but I'd still prefer some sort of proof. --Ardonik.talk()* 07:56, July 18, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for leaving a message on my talk page. Once Lexisnexis comes back up, can you update the citation? I know it seems like a minor issue, but a complete citation will make me a happy man. --Ardonik.talk()* 09:22, July 18, 2005 (UTC)
Oh, and by the way, your sig is weird. Why not link to your talk page directly like the rest of us do (or at least have the second external link point to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Lotsofissues&action=edit so people can edit your talk page instead of being forced to add a new section?) --Ardonik.talk()* 09:27, July 18, 2005 (UTC)

Actually, I do have one, but thanks![edit]

Hi lotsofissues (great username, BTW), I'm actually the anon usually known as StopTheFiling -- I normally do log in, but when I'm just browsing I sometimes don't because I don't have the time or energy to engage in some of the things I've dived into - for example, my brain has been fried regarding polygamy to the point where I'm taking a break from logging in so I don't have to see the "You have new messages" box or have this nagging feeling to go to the talk page on polygamy. I generally don't do major edits unless I am logged in, but sometimes I get logged out and then of course there are times I see stuff that needs fixing and can't help myself. :) Anyway, thanks for the note, I like the fact that people do that around here, which is more than I can say for some other internet pursuits out there. Vandalism[edit]

If it really is "a free content encyclopedia which anyone can edit" how can editing it in any way (for example, deleting images) be vandalism?

Vandalism[edit]

Huh? I still don't understand.

Biography Sirius Black was first mentioned briefly in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as a wizard who lent Hagrid a flying motorcycle shortly after Voldemort killed James and Lily Potter. His character becomes prominent in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where he is the eponymous prisoner.

Family and friends Sirius Black is one of the last people born to the House of Black, a prominent family of pure-blood wizards and witches. Known members of the family include Narcissa Black, who married Lucius Malfoy and gave birth to Draco Malfoy; Andromeda Black, who married Ted Tonks and gave birth to Nymphadora Tonks; Bellatrix Black, who married Rodolphus Lestrange; and Regulus Black, who tried to leave the Death Eaters and was killed on Lord Voldemort's orders.

At the age of sixteen, Sirius ran away from home, disgracing his family and prompting the removal of his name from the Black family tree tapestry.

Sirius Black was best friends with James Potter, Harry's father, and was also friends with Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. When they discovered that Lupin was a werewolf, his friends helped him by secretly becoming Animagi because Lupin was not compelled to attack non-humans. Sirius's Animagus form was that of a dog and his nickname was therefore "Padfoot".

When James married Lily Evans, Sirius was his best man at the wedding and later became Harry's godfather. By making him godfather, James and Lily had appointed Sirius as Harry's guardian in case anything happened to them.

Guilty without trial When James and Lily went in hiding from Lord Voldemort, they wanted to make Sirius their Secret-Keeper, but Sirius convinced them that Peter Pettigrew would be a better choice because no one would suspect Peter of being trusted with that task. However, Pettigrew was a traitor, and he betrayed the Potters to Voldemort. Pettigrew faked his own death and successfully framed Sirius for the Potters' deaths and for his own "murder".

Sirius's family sympathised with Lord Voldemort's desires to cleanse the Wizarding world of non-purebloods and his younger brother Regulus joined them. This may have led to accusations of Sirius's involvement in the murder of thirteen people (including James, Lily, and Peter) and his subsequent incarceration at Azkaban. Sirius was given no trial — his guilt was assumed so completely by everyone that no trial was considered necessary and Barty Crouch, who gave the order, was ruthless in his pursuit of justice.

Escape and redemption

An illustration by Mary GrandPre depicting Sirius Black riding on Buckbeak.During the course of events described in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Sirius escaped from Azkaban after learning that Pettigrew was still at large. After some confusion, Harry came to realize that Sirius is on the side of good, and began to see Sirius as the godfather he always was. After Sirius is recaptured at Hogwarts, Harry helps him escape with Buckbeak the condemned hippogriff.

As a fugitive, Sirius could communicate with Harry only sporadically. When Harry, Ron, and Hermione communicated with him in the fourth and fifth books, they called him "Snuffles" and pretended that he was a friendly stray dog. Harry continued to rely on Sirius as a father figure, and often turned to him in times of great need.

During the events described in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Sirius donated his family home for use as the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. He was effectively confined there due to the manhunt for him, even though Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Auror assigned to his case, is also a member of the Order. When he left for a short time to see Harry to the train station on his journey to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, his Animagus form may have been recognized by Draco or Lucius Malfoy. Despite this, Sirius made numerous attempts to contact Harry through the Floo Network, a system by which wizards and witches can communicate through fire, which is eventually monitored by the Ministry of Magic and Dolores Umbridge.

Lord Voldemort uses his growing power to influence Harry's mind, making him believe that Sirius is being held captive in the Department of Mysteries. In the ensuing battle Sirius is hit by a spell by Bellatrix Lestrange, his own cousin, sending him falling through a gate between the living and the dead. There is no doubt that this was fatal in the books, and master wizard Albus Dumbledore, fellow Marauder Remus Lupin and ghost Nearly Headless Nick have stated it outright; in fan circles many believe that he is not truly gone and that he is currently wandering through the land of the dead.

The opening chapter of the sixth book mentions that Sirius has been cleared of all criminal charges against him following his death, and that a formal inquiry will be made into the circumstances of his wrongful arrest and incarceration. The outcome of this inquiry and any resulting actions are currently not known.

Because of his popularity with fans and his untimely death, Sirius Black can be considered the Mercutio of the Harry Potter series.

Inheritance Sirius left all his property to Harry. Independently wealthy and having no great love for the place, Harry immediately gave Grimmauld Place to the Order's use. Kreacher the house-elf was now forced to serve him, which did nothing to help the elf's disposition, and was sent to help at the Hogwarts kitchens. Buckbeak passed into Hagrid's care. The whereabouts of the motorcycle are unknown.

It should be noted that had Sirius died intestate his possessions would have passed to his murderess, Bellatrix Lestrange (née Black), as the eldest of his surviving cousins and next-of-kin. Tradition dictated that the family property be handed down to the next Black male in accordance with male-preference primogeniture. Normally Sirius's property would have been passed to his brother Regulus following this custom, but the younger Black had predeceased him, and neither Sirius nor Regulus had children in possession of the Black family name.

Mental state Sirius was a rather tragic figure. His life was not the happiest and never gave him time to properly mature emotionally, which caused him to remain somewhat of a loose cannon all his days. In his Hogwarts days, he was a brash but apparently quite normal youth, but when differences in opinion between him and the rest of his family broke contact altogether, he was left craving the friendship and acceptance of his peers. This he found, which made him fiercely loyal to the Marauders, the closest people he had left. At this point he was (later on self-admittedly) an idiot. Arrogant and with a devil-may-care attitude, he was a bully to those outside his circle of friends. He would later come to regret this, but not enough to seek amends with Snape, his prime target.

After leaving school, the newly adult Sirius joined the Order of the Phoenix to take up the fight against Voldemort, putting himself into a high-stress environment where trust was scarce. This proved manageable until fellow Marauder Peter Pettigrew betrayed James and Lily Potter, causing their deaths, after Sirius had unwittingly put him in the perfect position to do so. When Pettigrew framed Sirius for his own murder, too, it was entirely too much to bear, and the wound would last for life.

That Sirius survived thirteen years in Azkaban at all is remarkable. That he was, even in part, salvageable after them is awe-inspiring. For over a decade he was capable of nothing but trying to hold on to vestiges of his sanity. His dog-form gave him respite from the Dementor's presence, his guilt over James and Lily gnawed at him, and his desire for revenge became an obsession. On escape, he had been greatly tainted by the prison. For the following year, he was directed by the fixation to commit the crime he had been convicted of, wild and alone.

It was only when he had his target at wandpoint that things took an up-turn. He was re-united with Lupin, but more importantly also with his godson, Harry. It was the latter who gave him a reason to give up on committing murder. The two formed a strong bond quickly, and though he was forced back on the lam Sirius could now allow himself to heal. Though clearly still Azkaban-marked, he fast started to again resemble an ordinary person. He never had had time to properly become an adult, though, and though his desire to protect Harry helped, he remained foolhardy. He desired a brotherly figure while Harry did the same for a parental one, and Sirius occasionally seemed to have trouble distinguishing him from James. When Voldemort rose again he was forced into his family's home, which he hated, to avoid capture. Though this did wonders for his social life (he gained one), it made him cross and morose, and increasingly frustrated as he felt he was being kept from doing his part in the war. He was unable to overcome his feud with Snape or his loathing for Kreacher, the demented house-elf of 12 Grimmauld Place. It is not surprising that when the Order sent an emergency team to rescue Harry and the gang from the Department of Mysteries, Sirius jumped at the opportunity. The Death Eaters were faced with a man who fought with wild excultance right until the moment he received the fatal blow.

Name etymology As with many Rowling characters, Sirius's name reveals part of his nature. "Sirius Black" is a pun on the fact that Sirius can turn into a giant black dog; Sirius is the name of a star (the brightest one in the sky) which can be found in the constellation Canis Major (the big dog). The star Sirius was called "dog's star" by some ancient cultures such as the Egyptians. Most (but not all) of Sirius's family is likewise named after stars (Bellatrix is in the constellation of Orion; Regulus is in Leo. Andromeda is a constellation in the northern hemisphere).

About Wikipedia Disclaimers

Oh, so that's it. It's about how the page looks. You could have told me. I didn't realize. It seems like you need to explain these things better on your website. I had thought I was free to edit the page however I wanted.

Lotsofissues writes: "I am puzzled over why you moved another user's page to the main article space?"

For the user in question was Mr Dave Green, who I know, and you don't, and I was messing with his mind. I hope this answers your question. Have a nice day! Thought for the day - Nicky Blair doesn't mean Blair's victory. Adios!

Wake Me Up When September Ends[edit]

Hi: Thanks for your fact checking at Wake Me Up When September Ends and for your constructive use of edit summaries generally. When you delete something material from an article it is constructive to place a copy of the deleted text on the talk page with an explanation of your reasoning. This serves three purposes: it reassures the original contributor that the deletion was made after due consideration (although the edit summary should provide such comfort, as yours did); it shows the original poster that their work is not simply being discarded and can be restored if they fix the problem (in this case, citing a source); it encourages other editors to comment and to further enhance the article. —Theo (Talk) 06:49, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Arab culture in France[edit]

I think a removal of a lot of the names and groups would be warranted. However, I think that some influential leaders and icons from Arab culture in France should stay. I will have a look over them and edit if the concensus is that it should be done.

There is also a lot more to say on the subject of Arab culture in France, and as it is, is only a stub. I don't have time this morning to add much more, but I, and others, could make this a potentially interesting article. - Grcampbell 09:39, 2005 Aug 5 (PCT) (my talk)

Mick & Dubya![edit]

Hardly a surprise to find that Mick does not like George Bush and even goes to the point of calling him a hypocrite etc. etc. Since Mick is a known heathen, bi-sexual Moron who looks like someone put out a fire in his face with an axe, he surely has nothing in common with the President of the United States who is moderately good looking, has a Harvard and Yale education, is morally inclined and is a heterosexual.

Your Talk:Ambition nonsense[edit]

I'd rather not be checking Wikipedia at all— I don't edit here anymore, after leaving in disgust about a year ago. However, someone linked to my blog from it, and therefore I follow WP sporadically. I saw just now the nonsense at Ambition.

You clearly misunderstand the situation on "a college messageboard". You're probably talking about xoxohth, a supposedly education-oriented forum where moderation is nonexistent and the signal-to-noise ratio is practically zero. It makes Wikipedia, which itself is disgusting, look civil in contrast. (I don't contribute there, anymore.) Contemporary with the time during which I contributed, there was a troll using the well-known community account ("DeanRobbins", which had about 500 alternate names; one of its names, not created by me, was "Ambition fan"). He or she contributed repeatedly with the same troll-post "What is Ambition?", a spoof of the "What is Contra Dancing?" troll (who also issued the same troll-post repeatedly). I had nothing to do with this, and would often erase (since it was a community acct, anyone could alter the posts) the posts entirely because the spamming was inappropriate and I did not want it connected in any way to me. I happen to think that this troll was trying to ridicule or annoy me, not promote my game. Anyway, were the troll hoping to promote it (which is highly unlikely) this method of publicity would have been very ineffective.

In the xoxohth mess, I was not trying to promote Ambition. In fact, I rarely (if ever) even brought it up. The "Ambition Fan" troll was most likely another user intending ironic ridicule. Since a certain girl from school would have been the only user of the site (to my knowledge) familiar with Ambition, it was probably her, or one of her friends. At this point, however, I don't care.

Since you have clearly misinterpreted the situation, you have no moral option other than to recuse yourself from the debate at Talk:Ambition and avoid making wild speculations.

I went to it and saw that a couple days ago, someone had used one of the community accounts (execration) to make an attack. This afternoon, I managed to find the password to said account and I changed that post entirely, redacting the accusation made therein by the original troll. The subject title can't be changed, but I replaced a malicious, hurtful post with a funny one. Mike Church 02:17, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reversions and Random Digits[edit]

First, you were right to revert my edits to Nicky Blair and Tony Blair. Secondly, A Million Random Digits is for statisticians, who need random numbers for, for instance, random selection, or Monte Carlo methods. Today it is a trivial task to generate random numbers on a computer and most statisticians will use Maple or similar programs in their work, but when A Million Random Digits was published (which was 1955), computer access wasn't always guaranteed, and so a book of random digits was useful to anyone who couldn't get to a computer. Yale College Re-redirect[edit]

Hi

Actually I felt that the point was valid regardless of whether they are federated colleges or residential colleges, but thanks for explaining the logic to me.

Pydos

"MY" article has been almost entirely rewritten by someone else. I no longer wish to be the "author." I certainly do not disagree with most of what the other person said, but I wish to remove my name from the article as it stands now. Please advise.

You asked me to make this, and so... ta, da, here it is: User:JesseW/List of articles about websites. All 239 of them. (Although some have been deleted, apparently.) Enjoy, and let me know what you use it for. JesseW 10:18, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I am not concerned or offended. The "new" version of "my" article took it from what I saw as a neutral, objective article to one which has (IMHO) a "chip on its shoulder" and so I simply don't want to have anything to do with it anymore. Collaboration is wonderful until it gets into the realm of imposing one's opinion on the facts and passing your personal "spin" off as an encyclopedia article.

Meaning of ^^;; (i hope no one has told you this, your user page is real long)[edit]

Yo! ^^;;=anime-looking emoticon used to represent embarrassment. The carrot thingies (^'s) are eyes closed in an embarrassed way, I guess? And the semicolons are sweatdrops, sort of a cliche for when a person is embarrassed. I hope you don't watch anime much or I will feel dumb for telling you things you know. be happy/Teentitans!

Howdy, I got your message and actually, we don't have to decide what section to put ^^;; in. Here is a quote from emoticons article:

English anime forums use a form of kaomoji adapted for single-byte encoding.
These are usually in the format of *_*, where the asterisks indicate the eyes,
and the central character, usually an underscore, is the mouth.
When a period is used for the mouth, it is often meant to make the person look cuter,
especially for women. Alternatively, the mouth can be left out entirely.
A quote mark '" or semicolon ; can be appended to the emoticon to imply apprehension,
or embarassment, à la the anime sweatdrop.

Obviously it would be impossible to put all the variations of emoticons in that article. (holy zounds, it'd be longer than your talk page!) Yup, The Wiki is cool. orz (bows to the wiki) (sorry that just seemed apropriate) Peace/Teentitans!

FYI[edit]

Its people like you that ruin Wikipedia. There are so many articles that have little or no information because nerds prowl the site and complain about text being taken from websites (which doesn't violate anything provided that the sources are cited). Honestly, how is an article supposed to have any info if it can't be taken from a website? If I went and typed it all up myself, some other doof would revert it and claim it's my opinion. Nearly every single article on here takes info from a website or a book of some sort. If nobody reverts those pages you messed with, I'm going to revert them and swap some words so nothing is word for word when compared to the sites they were pulled from. Ugh, you people amaze me with the weird stuff you do with your time. Iamblueman4 05:32, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Research on it and write? If that's the way articles are supposed to be done around here, you really have your hands full because there are many important ones that are taken directly or summarized from websites. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it against Wikipedia policy to research stuff and post it on here? I'm pretty sure they have a rule against making the site a research paper since it IS an encyclopedia. The Drake page was not taken solely from the admissions page, only parts were. While admission pages are usually sales pitches, they do contain important information about a college if you can get past the junk. Actually, many people would have found that Drake page interesting if they wanted information about the college. Now when they visit the page, they're going to get a small amount of junk that doesn't give much info on the school. Instead of being a self-righteous nerd, why don't you do the site a favor and actually TRY to 'fix' articles instead of erasing them and feeling like you've contributed to some great cause. Too many nerds like you hurt this site by limiting information. Iamblueman4 13:31, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
