Picture[edit]

I added some text about the history of the work and about the initial reaction to it. I also added the new picture because I really dislike Image:Havis Amanda 2002.jpg. It really doesn't do justice for the statue and the main focus is on the drunken students. I left it in because it represents the current acceptance of the work and hopefully someone will write something about the Vappu celebrations concerning Manta. --Laisak 17:27, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I was surprised there was no mention of Mantan lakitus too. Maybe I'll write something myself, but I'm not terribly familiar with the tradition myself (I've never participated in it, at least). — JIP | Talk 19:11, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Legend of the origin of the statue's name[edit]

I vaguely remember reading in Helsingin Sanomat (Kuukausiliite or Nyt-liite) a few years ago, that it is said that her name stems from one of the gentlemen at the reveal exclaiming "Det är ju Havis' Amanda!" - at the beginning of the 20th century "Havis" was a nickname for an establishment on "Merikatu" street in Helsinki, after the street's Swedish name "Havsgatan". It was suggested in the paper, that "Amanda" was one of the ladies of the establishment, frequented by many of the gentlemen of the time. It would need verifying by finding the reference, but it may be of interest to the article, if someone is interested in researching the subject. 80.186.63.171 (talk) 17:37, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
