Council Communism[edit]

I have reworded the main section in 'Council Communism' in an attempt

to reflect Pannekoek's belief that theory followed and crystalised the lessons learned in struggle,
to make more explicit the significance of the Russian revolution for workers' councils,
to give some context on workers' councils (ie opposition to trade unionism/parliamentarianism).

There's nothing in Bricianer's book about this. I remember hearing that the Nazis made Pannekoek sign a document promising not to engage in 'political' activity. Note that he did however write most of 'Workers' Councils' during this time, although it was not published. was he the Dutch Astronomer Royal?[edit]

A left-Leninist once told me that Anton Pannekoek was at one time the Dutch Astronomer Royal. I have read the main works on or by Pannekoek in English, and also his History of Astronomy, but I do not know whether this is true or not. If it is true, it should be mentioned here. According to http://www.inghist.nl/Onderzoek/Projecten/BWN/lemmata/bwn5/pannekoe he was a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was also a professor at the University of Amsterdam. It appears that while the government did not endorse his appointment at the University of Leiden (which is a State University) they did not stop his appointment at the University of Amsterdam (a municipal University), nor his election as member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. This would be impossible because the Netherlands does not have an Astronomer Royal. Likely they were confused either with the fact that Pannekoek was elected as member of the Royal Netherlands Academy or that he received the gold medal from the Royal Astronomical Society in London.--Chaokang Tai (talk) 12:50, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

"Pannekoek" is pronounced "pun-a-cook". As an aside, "pannekoek" means "pancake"; not the most unusual Dutch surname I've come across, but close.--Life in General (Talk) 16:10, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Antonie Pannekoek → Anton Pannekoek – The shortened "Anton Pannekoek" appears to be the common name for the subject. Google Ngrams shows it to be, by far, more commonly used than his full name "Antonie Pannekoek".[1] Personally I've always seen him referred to as "Anton", even the Dutch Wikipedia article refers to him as Anton Pannekoek.
