William Lynch Speech[edit]

I'd like to let you know that I saw some of your additions to this article. I reworded and cleaned up some of your words, and decided to readd some of what had been added by previous editors. I believe the "light vs. dark" paradigm is essential to this text, and therefore, I readded that under the "Legacy" section. I have no dispute that the text was alleged, so I let that idea stay. Thanks for the work on the William Lynch Speech article, except I think your words are a little exclusive. Let's have a compromise, please. I kept your words the same, I just added that some "belief, etc." Like I said I am not refuting that the text is not authentic, but I think that the idea of proponents vs. opponents should be clarified. Classical Chinese political philosophy[edit]

I see you've added a number of thinkers from Chinese antiquity to the Political philosophy article (in the "influential political philosophers"). Unfortunately, I think these are starting to look out of place. I don't think the article should be strictly Western, but there's definitely something different in those you've listed. Partly just that they're not well-known in Western philosophy, but also the fact they're all over two millenia ago (so are Plato and Aristotle, but just those two, who have clear connections to many listed later thinkers).

But perhaps what stands out most is that the main text has no description whatsoever of these classical Chinese schools; the listed thinkers just stand out without any relationship to the schools described in main text. I think if you could add an article section on "Classical Chinese political philosophy", that would motivate your inclusion of specific thinkers much better. What are the common issues and disputes that tie together the thinkers you list?

I also wonder whether the "Influential" section might stand to be divided into subsections reflecting the relatively isolated Western and Chinese traditions. Maybe an Islamic section also (though there's nothing to go there yet). Or others. Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 20:02, 2005 August 12 (UTC)

African and Caribbean Studies[edit]

Hi Fledgist - Happy New Year!

I write to ask if you would be interested in helping create an article on "African and Caribbean Studies", a subject which is being offered in more and more universities throughout the world? I notice from your user page that you are a Jamaican Wikipedian, a political scientist, and I've noticed that you, like me, have contributed to articles on Guyana, so I thought you may be a good person to ask. The reason I wanted to start this article is that I have an interest in Caribbean history and culture, particularly that of Guyana, where I worked for two years. I've created some articles on Guyanese writers, (for example) Wilson Harris, Roy Heath, and Fred D'Aguiar, and while researching the latter, noticed that he had read African and Caribbean Studies at Kent in 1985 (I think that Kent was the first University in the UK to offer the subject). However, my own expertise lies in computing, engineering and socialist history, so I hope you will be able to assist.

Thanks for your response, and offer of help - I see you've connections with Clark Atlanta University, University of the West Indies, New York University, and the University of California, San Diego. Perhaps you could start with researching whether these unis offer the subject, if so, when they started, curriculum etc? Any help would be most appreciated!

Thanks for that - it's a start! Would you be able to tell me if the curriculae for the courses you mention are available on line? How do they compare with, say, the African American history courses available in US unis?
