Page[edit]

This page is being disputed for two reasons.

1- This is a plug for the PCC, plain and simple.
2- The accuracy of "exhibits" at the Polynesian Cultural Center is entirely questionable due to bias by LDS Doctrine, which claims that Polynesians arrived in the Pacific from America, either descended from Lamanites or Hagoth the voyager (Alma 63:5). Current archaeological, linguistic, and genetic evidence, as well as oral traditions among Pacific Islanders, indicates that the Polynesians originated in Southeast Asia.

Removed POV?[edit]

I've tried to remove what appeared to be POV in the article. Some of the claims that the original anonymous poster was concerned about are not POV, but statement of fact.

The PCC is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hawaii.
Having been to the PCC several times, I find no direct reference to LDS doctrine in any of the presentations. If visitors elect to take the bus tour of the town, campus, and temple, they will hear about the LDS Church. The demonstrations, exhibits, and shows have no relationship to the church.
The profits from the PCC do directly support BYU-Hawaii and the students from the Pacific Rim.

Categorization[edit]

This article was added to the Category:Human geography without explanation. Why this establishment and not other museums, such as Colonial Williamsburg or the Minneapolis Institute of Arts? The notion of human geography doesn't seem to be explicitly mentioned in the text of the article... Malepheasant 11:28, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I edited out as much bias as I could[edit]

The article was back to being a plug for the LDS and the center. The center, IMHO, serves bad food, inaccurate history, and inaccurate culture.

I cleared out as much of the cruft as I could, even though I'm not completely sure what I'm talking about. Zora 06:58, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speak the controversy[edit]

I came to this page because I heard about the LDS spreading the bullshit notion of Hawaiian culture being related to that of the "ancient Israelites" in America. It's sad that it's not here, even as a section entitled "controversy."

A religion holds a belief about where Hawaiians originated. That's pretty controversial stuff. We better make sure this "controversy" section gets first priority. Cleaning Up the Page[edit]

We're going to need some volunteers for the following categories:

Citations for verification You will be responsible for finding trusted sources (See Wikipedia:Verifiability/reliable sources for more information.) A good place to start is the BYU Hawaii Library Pacific Islands Room. The first step is to identify reliable sources. Then we can make plans for using them.
Photographers If you have a talent for taking quality pictures and documenting them, you can contribute to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Polynesian_Cultural_Center#
Reviewers of similar wikipedia articles We need volunteers to examine other articles that could have a similar structure to this page. For example, you could check out pages on Hawaiian tourist attractions or cultural sites, living museums / cultural centers, church historical sites, etc. Try to get a feel for categories / sections that would apply to the PCC.
Cultural artifacts at the PCC While a lot of items in the PCCs collection / exhibits are culturally informative, some items, such as the Iosepa Voyaging Canoe and the Fijan Temple have special and verifiable cultural significance. We need volunteers to identify these and to learn about them.

The Brigham Young University–Hawaii article, along with the articles in Category:Brigham Young University–Hawaii could use a lot of attention and care. "Free"[edit]

I love it when advertisements announce something for "free" that has in fact already been paid for: "Buy two, get one free!" - Um, no, you've paid for the "free" one by the way the price of the other two has been calculated.

So, what about this "free" shuttle bus? Is it included in the $100-200 admission fee? Then it's not free but simply part of the already paid-for program.

Or is this really a free tour for anyone who happens to come by, no matter if they have paid the park admission fee or not? In that case, you might consider calling it "free".

But even in that case I would recommend remembering the old saying "There's no such thing as a free lunch". I haven't been on this tour but I would strongly assume that it's basically an LDS advertisement program. --87.150.8.82 (talk) 10:12, 11 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Historical accuracy[edit]

The article should include a section on criticism. This is not a museum striving for a historically accurate depiction of its subject, this is a Disneyland type show program with fantasy costumes and fun activities without any serious information or placement in a historical context.
