Thanks for creating this - it's most useful.

It'd be good to have a side page listing all the existing pages (both general and individual athletes) that need work, too - as well as some examples to follow when creating said pages. Ambi 00:30, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

If we have specific year articles, I don't think it's necessary to have separate [country] at the Summer Olympics and [country] at the Winter Olympics articles since theyre going to be overviews. --Jiang 22:31, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Why are we ignoring he 1906 Summer Olympics? - SimonP 00:21, Aug 31, 2004 (UTC)

Good job, a lot of work here. But at the moment, athletes groupings by macro-areas and international or supranational organizations seems overlooked here. The related articles should be placed somewhere in the tables, so as not to miss any information --Pgreenfinch 12:37, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I have grouped countries where they have competed as a single team. Examples include Australasia (1908-12), Unified Germany (1956-60-64) and Commonwealth of Independent States (former SSR's) in 1992. If people wish to calculate or group countries by any other method, they are free to do so as they wish, all the information is available. -- Chuq 13:37, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Seems you didn't grasp the idea, my fault for the lack of precision, I know that people have pocket calculators or excel software, but I'm talking about obvious groupings that are worthy of articles, as there are already several. --Pgreenfinch 16:30, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I understand exactly what you're getting at, my point is that the EU does not compete as a single team, as several people have said on the VfD pages (all attempts). Feel free to add details to Sport in the European Union (looks like someone already has), feel free to research EU activity into a combined NOC and write an article on its current status. If you really want to, feel free to check the qualification results for all the EU countries and then see how the EU would have ranked with only the top 3 (or whatever the per-NOC limit is for each sport) athletes actually competing (although this may be classed as original research and not suited to Wikipedia). However, dont just list all the EU countries, add up the totals, and say "this is how many countries the EU would have won if it competed as a single team" as it is NOT true. -- Chuq 23:09, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I see it as a very complicated and embarrassed answer. If I understand well, I hope I'm wrong, you decided to truncate, for obscure categorizations, your own article that is supposed to give the broad picture on the Olympics. By the way, where did you find the sentence "this is how many, etc..."? The article you refer to is just giving facts, such as athletes results and UE comments. Also, it is not the only article that cover an area not limited to individual NOCs. Those national committees exist for paracticality, but are not, rightly, recognized in the Olympic charter, that is about athletes, not countries. NOC results are unofficial and their source is not any IOC publication. Btw, you should give this precision in your table footnotes. I suppose your persistence to omit some information, on a project you decided to be the pilot, is due to a lack of attention, as I cannot suppose one second that it could be intentional NPOV. No future admin would do that, for sure ;-)) --Pgreenfinch 07:05, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Congratulations, you managed to reply to my post without actually replying to it. Discussing this with you is like talking to a brick wall, I'm sick of repeating myself so I'll just point you back to my previous reply until you feel like replying to it. Your last sentence is trolling, please stop it. Btw, I'm already an admin, and you're right, no admin would include a team that didn't compete at the Olympics and try to claim or act like it did. -- Chuq 07:38, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Reply to what? Seems to me you tried to find any posible escape to my observations and to raise the famed "brick wall". Anyway now your answer is clear, you prefer a narrow approach for this article and to close the discussion by pointing back to a previous "reply". I would have prefered something more positive but anyway I like clarity ;-)) --Pgreenfinch 08:16, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Naming conventions[edit]

Someone has raised this at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions, but the contemporary names for individual countries needs some consideration: I've just disambiguated the Syrian and North Korean entries for the 2004 games. What should the convention be for naming [[Country]] at the [[Year]] Summer Olympics, the country's proper name, or it's commonly used name? -- Graham ☺ | Talk 15:20, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Sorry, hadn't noticed your comment here. Thats a good question, I tend to use the common names (ie. China and Taiwan, rather than People's Republic of China and Republic of China, along with North and South Korea, East and West Germany, etc. But many of the at the 2004 Summer Olympics articles had already been created when I created this page, so I tended to follow that standard where it existed. -- Chuq 13:37, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Winter events/ more summer events.[edit]

Is there a separate page for the winter tables, or has there just not been one made? That's quite alright it there isn't one; maybe I'll do it someday.... Also, I heard that BMX racing was to be a sport at the 2008 games...could someone varify this and add it to the table? Thanks! --J@red [T]/[+] 20:29, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting you should ask. I have just created one. Go to the WP:OLYMPICS progject page and you will find both the "summer" and also now the "winter" article lists. Some editing work still to do on the country article template part. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page) 09:18, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
