Paranormal beliefs[edit]

Senator Pell strongly pushed for the study of ESP research at university labs even after those labs showed that their research showed no evidence of its existence. His allocation of funds for this research had caused concern in the scientific community, as cited by James Randi in his latest commentary.

Is there an appropriate way to include this information, or is it even noteworthy enough? Smoove K 01:57, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just read the chapter "Claiborne Pell, Senator from Outer Space" in Martin Gardner's essay collection "Did Adam and Eve Have Navels?", leading me here.
Gardner writes, after providing a context of the extent of crazy beliefs among American politicians in the 1980s, "In my opinion, however, no one in Washington has rivaled Senator Pell in combining ignorance of science with extreme gullibility toward the performances of psychics."
He mentions Pell's introduction of a "bill for government funding of a New Age organization named the National Committe on Human Resources. Senators Albert Gore and Nancy Kassebaum were cosponsors.. The committee was to have included two members 'with trianing and experience in extraordinary performance results,' a euphemistic way to describe parapsychologists. Ridiculed by other senators as a 'spoon-bending bill', it quickly died. As one congressman put it, 'the giggle factor is off the meter on this one.'"
Then he describes James Randi's replication, in Pell's presence, of one of Uri Geller's tricks. Pretty funny, but I don't know if it is enough of a reliable source to make mention of Pell's paranormal proclivities WP:DUE. Quick googling did not turn up much. Does anyone have more on it? --Hob Gadling (talk) 09:35, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Philanthropist???[edit]

Notice that Pell is listed in Catagory:American Philanthropists and Catagory:Philantropists. Just because he sponsored the legislation that untimalely became the "Pell Grant" and Helped create the legislation for the National Endowment for the Arts; that doesn't make him a philanthropist. Remember those are taxpayer dollars that are bein granted, not Pell's personal money. Let's consider a removal from these two Catagories. If there is reason to keep him in the catagogies because he spread some of his own money around, then let's get the details in the main article and reference it. Just my thoughts about a great Senator and Coast Guardsman, but wanting the right facts in the article. Cuprum17 (talk) 02:06, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pell College Education Grants[edit]

The claim that "education while incarcerated resulted in a 65% drop in recidivism rates and that resulted in a safer public" needs references to actual studies from reputable sources (not news articles and other media sources). Otherwise it is a political claim and should be deleted. Also, the verb "resulted", being in the past tense, should be clarified. I.e. was it a one-time drop, or can we say that a similar drop as a result of the education of prisoners can still be counted on in the presnt time? If the latter then the word "resulted" should be changed to the present tense. Skinnerd (talk) 14:02, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I decided to delete the sentence on recidivism rates because it is not supported by references. Skinnerd (talk) 14:17, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Naval and military ranks are NOT capitalized, unless they are used as titles[edit]

Naval and military ranks are NOT capitalized, unless they are used as titles: e.g. Commander Montgomery Scott. Do not capitalize anything like seaman, airman, sergeant, petty officer, lieutenant, captain, major, commander, colonel, admiral, general, air marshal.
Furthermore, do not capitalize the names of ranks in police forces, fire departments, etc. - e.g. corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, detective, captain, fire chief, unless of course, they are used as titles, such as Corporal Cisneros, Sergeant Friday of the famous TV series "Dragnet", Lieutenant Mac Taylor of the TV series "CSI: New York", and police Captain Smith (for example).
By the way, the same actor (Gary Sinese) who plays Lt. Mac Taylor also played Lt. Dan Taylor of the U.S. Army in the famous film "Forrest Gump".98.67.108.16 (talk) 17:01, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
