Transfers to Wiktionary

Kevin, your Bot says that it is transferring articles to Wiktionary. Unfortunately it appears to be lying. Although it is marking the articles concerned as candidates for speedy deletion, there is no sign of said articles appearing in the Wiktionary (at least not the ones that I checked -- "backhander" for instance). Please stop the bot immediately until you sort this out. I'm assuming that there is a bug in it. Of course if there is some other explanation for the missing Wiktionary entries, I would be delighted to hear it. In fact it would be nice if the Kevinbot produced a link to a full explanation of what it's doing, assuming that it is in fact working as you intended. Because, if it is, it's not obvious. In any case we don't want to lose a whole lot of useful text, so in the meantime I'm assuming the worst and reversing its changes manually. -- Derek Ross | Talk 03:44, Mar 25, 2005 (UTC)

Not transferring edit history

No problem. My goal is to eventually get all of the regular Tennessee editors up to admin status (that want to be admins) so we can do a better job of keeping up the local articles and stewarding new local editors. Transwiki stuff

I don't know what the hell is going on, but you need to make your bot pay more attention to talk pages. I objected to a transwiki for letter carrier several months ago, being nice on the talk page and not just summarily reverting everybody in sight, but my reward has been to have another bot attempt to delete it, and only fail because of compression. It really pisses me off that we have irresponsible people running bots to delete stuff, not even taking the trouble to notice if something had been posted on the talk page. I guess the next time I'm just going to revert, since the talk page is apparently no longer used. Stan 17:45, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hello, I posted some comments at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Bot_User:KevinBot. I have some concerns about whether the bot should be automatically putting Template:Deletetranswikied notices on articles... actually, the very existence of this template is a bit problematic and contradictory. -- Curps 02:39, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Move to Wikisource

I think your bot has sped up the transwiki process quite nicely. I wonder if it could work on Category:Move_to_Wikisource doing the same job for Wikisource (I don't know the what the work involved in programming is, so excuse me if I'm suggesting a huge job). There certainly aren't as many articles to transwiki there, but it looks as if there's not a single editor doing the job, so it will gradually pile up (85 now). What do you think? I do appreciate your transwikiing, it was only a little while ago that there were hundreds! :) Now if it's not too much trouble I'd like to give it a go, but I warn you I have no experience in programming or anything like that. In response to your comment that transwikiing has given you a ton of grief and no love, here's a for your efforts.

It's an ungrateful job, but if you didn't do it, nobody would. People seem to think that if you make even one dubious decision in a thousand, it's the end of the world ("it's a bot! shoot it!") It's not just transferring the information correctly to page to page. The pywikipediabot framework is only to get the page in its entirely as the text of the wikicode. So basically, if you did "Edit this page" and cut and pasted all the wiki text into a log file, that's basically what I'm doing. -- AllyUnion (talk) 21:39, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

After taking a break from the code, I looked it over and found one minor thing that I forgot which is why it broke. Then I took a step back and rewrote some things. Now it's working fine. Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Lorna Nogueira

Please don't use the same subpage as an old vfd for a new one; it makes maintenance unnecessarily painful. Either move the old vote aside (as I've done in this case, to Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Lorna Nogueira/vote1), or manually change the vfd link from the article to Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Lorna Nogueira (2) or similar. I do agree that the page needs to go, and would further support deleting the preserved copies out of userspace. —Korath (Talk) 04:58, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

Tutorial formerly named Prince

In re: Wikipedia:How to make complex illustrations using FreeHand and Photoshop -- by all the gods, I have got to figure out a better name for this -- I see you have restored the "move to Wikibooks" template.

Note that I did not remove the tag, and am not particularly hostile to the move. I'm only concerned that it is a large and complex project and may very well be difficult to move intact. I started it in Wikipedia space because I saw other graphics tutorials here; and I started it before I became the target of Netoholic's single-minded, stalking attacks.

If you are, in some way, Netoholic's teammate, then I salute you, Sir. If you believe you are acting in truly impartial fashion, then I ask you to shoulder the burden of the move to Wikibooks. It's technically quite involved. If neither, then I suggest you have been made into Netoholic's cat's paw. His nomination for movement has effectively stopped me from contributing to the tutorial.

That's the way I saw it, too, when I first created the page. I saw other tutorials in Wikipediaspace and I figured that was where this belonged. Since then, you're the 3rd person to tag the tutorial for a move -- see the tutorial's Talk page for discussions.

I really don't know or care whether the tutorial moves. I think a far more serious problem is that I unthinkingly created it with an unbelievably cumbersome name. How about Wikipedia:How to make complex illustrations using FreeHand and Photoshop becomes Wikipedia:FreeHand and Photoshop Tutorial. That's the easiest name I can come up with. As far as civility goes, I try as much as possible to be as civil as possible. Of course like everyone else I do have my buttons that can get pushed sometimes. Well, Old Netty is a highly skilled button-pusher, and when he can't push the button himself, he'll look for someone else to do it for him.

Your name is better, but still clumsy -- but I appreciate the effort. For one, I don't want to tie it to those two applications. It is a tutorial on the combined use of bitmap and vector graphics editors, showing the user how to switch back and forth between the two to obtain results. I just inserted a reference to the open-source Inkscape, and I want to do more like that.

The perspective of a newcomer to graphics work is exactly what is needed. It's a tutorial; seasoned pros know all the tricks I plan to show new guys. Everything about it should make sense to somebody with some basic computer skills who has dabbled in these two areas.

I like Wikipedia:Advanced image editing, because it is the shortest. You just gloss over the specifics (in the title), and that's fine. It does not really point to the topic with the correct jargon, though. Perhaps Wikipedia:Advanced graphic design? Photographs!

Kevin, I understand that you apparently have a problem with my keeping several articles which you do not like on my User pages, however, since I am not violating any polices and many other Wikipedians do this, will you please stop putting all my photos up for deletion? Tony

I don't think there's any harm in keeping a page or two in your userspace, as long as these pages aren't linked from the main encyclopedia space (and I believe we have a bot to check that?). Of course someone keeping hundreds of deleted pages in userspace would be pushing it, but I don't think anyone's doing that. Kevin, I don't get into edit wars. I have reverted your removal of the picture once and will not do so again (usually someone else shows up and does it for me, and if they don't I take that as a sign to drop the idea).

I'm tired

I have angry new editors I would like to be friends with at WP:LDS and WP:JW each shaking fists at me this week over suppressing the truth about "the Morg" and "the Borg".
