This page was created (or revamped from a stub) in a slightly chatty style - my wife comes from Otaru, so I have a feel for the place.--JohnCrocker 09:34, 4 May 2005 (UTC) PS. Why do my comments about Otaru Beer keep disappearing? I can only guess you haven't been there. Being new to Wikipedia, I'm beginning to realise that there are an army of people out there who dabble and change articles even if they have no experience of the subject, and they work hard to remove all the quirky things, making the articles as bland as a traditional encyclopedia rather than the interesting web experience that it could be.[reply]

John, as someone who has been to Otaru, I appreciate your efforts in expanding the article on this interesting city and hope you continue to do so. At the same time, NPOV writing is the foundation of Wikipedia ... Wikipedia is not a personal blog or a travel guide. The key is to describe "all the quirky things," not advocate them. Also, have you looked at Wikitravel? It might be a good outlet for the non-encyclopedic information you have that would be valuable specifically for tourists to Otaru. "Wikipedia is not a personal blog or a travel guide" - Who says Wikipedia is any particular thing? Also, who defines "non-encyclopedic information"? What is wrong with advocating? As, in fact, some would see it important to advocate an important cultural site such as "Nishin Goten", (quite possibly a private business), I would argue that Otaru Beer is (whilst not important) an interesting and unique cultural sight. I'm sure many users would prefer elements of personal experience to be kept in, on the main article pages (where people will be looking for them) - that has to be a unique advantage of a web-based tool. Rearranging and adding material material is fantastic. Removing... If something is clearly an opinion, why should it be removed?

The first two official policies of Wikipedia:
  1. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Its goals go no further. See Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not for more info.
  2. Avoid bias. Articles should be written from a Neutral point of view, representing differing views on a subject fairly and sympathetically.
Put simply, Wikipedia is not a soap box. If Wikipedia devolved into a collection of biased opinions, it would cease to be an encyclopedia. Please present the information in a factual method and let the reader form his or her own opinions. CES 13:52, 27 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

school[edit]

Does this place have a high school?--Lolichan4u 17:54, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It has several. CES 18:19, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why "Hokkaidō"?[edit]

Is there a reason for a macron here? If Hokkaido does not have a macron, why does Otaru, Hokkaido have one? I'm not sure of the specifics so did not attempt a move or anything, just curious. JoshuSasori (talk) 13:54, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It presumably dates from the early days of Wikipedia when it was considered "correct" to slap textbook-style macrons on everything. If a move proposal were made to move to Otaru, Hokkaido, it would make sense to move all Hokkaido placename articles to [[XYZ, Hokkaido]] en masse to maintain consistency, but then that would raise the issue of how we deal with places such as Yūbari, Hokkaidō, where the town/city name also uses macrons. Is it acceptable to have Yūbari, Hokkaido, or do we go all the way and move it to Yubari, Hokkaido? The mess that that would create is probably why no one has wanted to take the plunge and propose page moves. --DAJF (talk) 14:35, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think exactly the same as you. I also think people don't volunteer to fix all these articles because you need admin tools to do it, and perhaps no admins are interested in doing it. Azylber (talk) 20:19, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Missing space in Lead[edit]

it has grown as a bedroom community. As of July

I would fix it myself, but I can't. Assuming this is a mistake, of course.
