According to the article in the recent Dictionary of Virginia Biography, this article is riddled with errors, starting with his birth and death dates. He was also born in Dinwiddie County to Hannah Ravenscroft Pythress Claiborne and her second husband Burnell Claiborne and moved to Brunswick County by 1773, where he captained the county militia and began representing the the HOuse of Delegates in 1783, and then was a state senator for a term that began in 1789, but ended slightly early because of his election to the U.S. House of Representatives representing the 8th Congressional district, then the 17th after redistricting. He married Mary Clayton in Dinwiddie County and had seven sons before she died in 1802, including his successor as congressmen John Claiborne and Thomas Claiborne (1780=1856) of Tennessee, and son Augustine Claiborne served in the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829-1830. The widower remarried, to a widow with 4 children in Suffolk County, but they experienced financial problems before his death. Somewhat oddly (except that slaves were more mortgageable than real estate, his slaveholdings decreased from 36 slaves in 1787 to 26 adult slaves about a decade later, and only 10 slaves by the time he left Brunswick County.Jweaver28 (talk) 23:23, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
