Alternative image[edit]

I've replaced Image:winterberry1.jpg American Winterberry foliage and berries with a new, larger photo of a variegated holly bush, although it is still on American Winterberry. -- Solipsist 21:26, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)

  • Why not use both pics? (idle question)Gzuckier 17:48, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • No particular reason - the article doesn't seem long enough to support too many pictures and Image:winterberry1.jpg already had a use on the Winterberry page. -- Solipsist 18:56, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Some idiot has vandalised the site. I should have corrected the matter, but I could not determine how to edit that section. Ta.

Where did External links go[edit]

MPF removed the External Links.[1] Why? In history he says they were moved to individual species pages. Your average person will look for Holly, not an individual specie. So I say moving them to individual species pages essentially makes them useless to the average person. I say the External Links as they once existed should be restored to this page, and yes, placed on the individual species pages as well. --SafeLibraries 02:48, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

Number of species[edit]

Our article on Aquifoliaceae indicates the family has about 600 species; this is confirmed by "The Families of Flowering Plants" by Watson and Dallwitz [2]. But then here in Ilex, which is the sole genus within Aquifoliaceae, we say there are about 400 species. None of the external resources listed on the page give the 400-species figure. The USDA through GRIN lists about 200; the others combined don't even list 50. Since I can't find a resource that agrees with the 400-species figure I changed the article to 600 to agree with Aquifoliaceae.Thehappysmith 14:03, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Taxonomy problem[edit]

The domain, which in this case is Eukarya, is the highest and most basic taxonomic rank. I'm sick and tired of taxonomy boxes that omit it. I already corrected that for this article, but it's a problem among many articles about living things. I know kingdoms used to be believed to be the highest and most basic taxa, but that was wrong and is now outdated. Let's bring Wiki up to speed on this. -The Mysterious El Willstro

Drupe or Berry?[edit]

Drupes and berries are botanically two different things. The article also says that the fruit contains up to 10 seeds. In that case, the fruit is not a drupe, because drupes have one seed with a hard outer coating. See drupe and berry 72.204.15.161 (talk) 22:28, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dioecious image caption[edit]

The image which depicts 2 branches to illustrate the dioecious nature of hollies, has a confusing caption, namely: "(top right) male flower enlarged from female plant". I am aware that some cultivars of I. aquifolium are self-fertile, so am reluctant to change the caption myself in case I make a botanical error, but as it stands I think the caption isn't very clear. non sequitur[edit]

"Hence the cut branches, especially of I. aquifolium, are widely used In Christmas decoration." why "Hence" which suggests a logical connection. What is the logical connection between the colors and the usage? It's not explained in the article. 71.163.114.49 (talk) 00:23, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ilicin[edit]

Does Ilicin actually exist? Where is it described beyong Wikipedia and related? researching it as part editor of Wikipedia:Holly and Wikipedia:Ilex aquifolium.

CAS No 82374-46-7. Its wikidata entry is ilicin (Q19678075), and the linked frwiki article has a few refs. But SciFinder does not have any hits by CASNo or by name. DMacks (talk) 05:18, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Toxicity[edit]

I've rewritten the toxicity section because of concerns that toxicity work on the European species will be unduly extended to species on other continents. It is my understanding that WP policy is to be conservative with medical information. The rewrite reflects that small doses of holly fruit are not dangerous, while larger doses may be. This seems to be mainstream advice. There are some who conclude that a few reports of low I. aquifolium toxicity applies to all hollies. This logic seems dangerously flawed. --Ggpauly (talk) 04:04, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This rewrite was reverted by an ip account without explanation. Because of the anonymity and lack of courtesy I reversed the revert.--Ggpauly (talk) 04:04, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nemopanthus[edit]

Is this monotypic, or does it have 8 species? (8 names in Nemopanthus is not necessarily the same as 8 species.) Lavateraguy (talk) 08:50, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
