Closure of SBS[edit]

Long time no see, Darius. Unfortunately, participation in SBS has been too low for the project to function properly. I have thus been forced to declare its disbandment here. However, there seems to be some resistance by the members... Right now, I am under siege in my castle. Could you please talk some sense into them?

Goodness, Darius, I was only joking... "Talk some sense into them" was referring to the pitchfork-bearing mob they had supposedly formed; all you had to do was read the talk page first. I am sorry for this mess, but it also serves as a wake-up call: you have really distanced yourself from SBS. Are you sure this is how you want to continue?

I've got to admit that I was rather shocked to see your response to my little joke; you've got me fooled, all right. I've also printed several "official" papers of various kinds in my school days, and I'm proud to say they've been very official-like according to my classmates. This one, you should know, has never been printed; I simply stitched together screenshots of the page in Microsoft Word, so that I wouldn't have to either print or scan it. It looks clearer, too. If you zoom in enough, you will see the pixels.
I understand your being busy; I also have several engagements in Real Life, and have been involved into various projects and initiatives on Wikipedia as well. I am particularly active in the Manual of Style and the Main Page's Errors page.
French is awful. It's a nice-sounding language, but its grammar is horribly difficult and its orthography is as bad as that of English. I had to study French for three years in junior high school; I remember a number of words (including numbers), but next to nothing grammar-wise.
We really should co-operate with Infoboxes; the two systems should be complementary, but a lack of communication between the two projects can only create problems and conflict. I'll see what I can do.
I don't know anything about s-ref's problems, but even if I did I couldn't help. I don't know anything about these things. That's why it's important you should participate in SBS discussions, at least the ones about technical matters. A few minutes of your time every week could do some difference without burdening you much. But there's no pressure. :-)

First of all, please make up your mind: where do you want this conversation to take place? Here or on my talk page? This tennis-ball logic makes me dizzy.
Nice work on Napoleon's article; some order needed to be brought there. I have taken some care of the templates, replacing hyphens with en dashes (one should always use en dashes in date ranges) and removing useless year links. The templates' names were wrong in a couple of them as well; you might want to be careful there, because such mistakes make the v/d/e links take an editor to another template, or nowhere at all.
Ah, Darius... I don't know if you've realised it yet, but I am with the Dash Police now. I have been quite active at the Manual of Style, and as a result (of this and of other things) I have changed quite a bit from what you might remember. My editing personality is a little different (more mature, I suppose); even my English has improved. For instance, remember the WAF debate? I have come to realise that we were wrong; blinded, perhaps, by our new-found zeal, we wanted to use succession boxes in pages where that would be unsuitable. You must have changed your mind as well, because I have now noticed that you've had s-fic tagged for speedy deletion. I don't understand why the petition was rejected; the template is not used anywhere.
Your new idea of a page for navboxes is an interesting one. We really need to work with the Infobox people, in order to make our systems complementary instead of conflicting. We also need to settle the dates format at some point, once and for all, as its conflicting the Manual of Style has often come up. Basically, we have lots of things to do. Your taking this initiative with navboxes makes my next question sound quite plausible: Have you decided to return to SBS in earnest? I don't want to press you, but I am finding it increasingly hard to keep SBS on my own. My ever increasing workload at school and in other sectors of Wikipedia on one hand, and the perennially small participation in the project on the other, do not allow for a smooth process. If you stayed, however, we could move things along more easily.
(You have said that you've had to leave your other Wikipedia projects due to a lack of time, but I haven't really seen you work in any other projects so far—just the mainspace. I'd like to know where you were active, both out of curiosity and in case we could find some common links.)
Now, if we are to work on SBS, on-Wiki communication may not suffice. I have tried to contact you by e-mail, but you don't seem to have the feature activated. (May I be so indiscreet as to ask why?) I wonder if you've heard of Skype; it can be extremely useful for brainstorming (I already have a few ideas I'd like to discuss). I say that you should consider it seriously; I am using it to communicate with a couple of other Wikipedians, and it is a wholly different experience (real-time discussions and all).

PPS: One of these days I intend to create a To-do list for the project in my SBS subpage, which I have recently converted to general-use. I have a long list of things that need to be done in my laptop, and this could help us organise a little better, and set some priorities.
PPPS: About a month ago, I installed a wireless Internet connection; it's a little slow, but now I can log in wherever I want, whenever I want. If you'd look at my edit count, you'd see that my edits have nearly doubled in March in comparison to my average. This is turning into an addiction... Tagging templates for speedy deletion[edit]

Please do not tag in-use templates for speedy deletion. It makes it very confusing to figure out where the tags are coming from as the speedy deletion tags are included onto pages that transclude the template. If you need to tag something in template space for speedy deletion other than with {{db-t3}} (which is a special tag), you should always use noinclude tags around it. WP:CSD#Templates under T3 gives the conditions under which unused templates may be deleted. Please see {{db-t3}} for usage instructions ... the short version of it is that if you use {{db-t3|~~~~~|TemplateName}} and if nobody has used the template in that time, it will be deleted. This special tag includes the name of the template so if somehow the template were to be used subsequent to tagging, it makes it easy to figure out where the speedy deletion tag is coming from. --B (talk) 18:47, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Namesake template[edit]

Yes, I was hoping to insert these into infoboxes once the nomenclature was firmed up. Deciding what "namesake" actually means to everyone so it wasn't ambiguous and would need further changing was my hope. Forlorn, since no one has come up with any other suggestions. I think the idea was kind of cute, but no, not really a succession per se. Hate to delete it but no one has picked up on it either. Oh, well. Death to the unused! I'm very wikimissing (timewise) right now, but my suggestion is to simplify the problem as described[1]...

  1. Copy your sandbox version to template:Tt0...Tt9 test sandboxes, so is in template namespace. (I just opened up Tt0 4U, so it's definitely available.)
  2. Examine operation piece by piece... Template:Silent can be used to just "SWALLOW AND DISARM" parts vetted, or unneeded.
  3. Use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ExpandTemplates if useful to see expansion from preprocessor's output...
  4. The symptom described... getting both {{PAGENAME}} AND a passed named (or numeric) parameter is easy to fix. Try {{{Param_name|{{PAGENAME}} }}}
    1. Alternatively, should be able to craft #if or #ifeq tests, but they are basically unecessary in the situation you describe.

Hello, you messaged me concerning citations for the Isabella I of Castile page but I really have no idea what you're talking about. If I edited it, I do not know when since it has well over 3000 edits. I tried looking but couldn't find my name anywhere on the edit history. And the page is quite adequately cited compared to the majority of other pages, so again I do not know what you mean. Mind clarifying?

There are references at the bottom of the page, but there are no citations. If there were you would see 'ref' tags in the mark up. The only ref tags present are the couple I added the other day. I sent the same note out to several users whose name appears in the edit history there, hoping that someone might be up for the task. I checked the edit history again, and your name is not there...which is strange, as I selected names right out of the edit history, clicked on 'talk' which brought me directly to the user page. Opinion needed !![edit]

Hello !! :Whaleyland !!, I am writing to you as I found your name on Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy and I need someone else's opinion on Genealogy template.

The template is Template:Tagore family. Now as per my opinion the spouses of family descendents should not be part of template, as they are not direct genealogical descendants. Please go thru history to get aware of dispute. The creator of template User:AkhilKumarPal is not ready to accept this argument and claims ownership and has reverted me twice.

I do not want to revert him again and as per 3RR rule and I need to be sure what I am doing is right or wrong. Please let me know, if spouses can be included in template or not, as per your opinion?

I'm not sure what that means, but only two articles link to Jean IV of Brittany, and one of them is this page. It is not a necessary redirect and the name is counter to Wikipedia naming conventions for nobility in that it uses a French-language variant of the name and it does not specify the individual's noble rank, hence the article John IV, Duke of Brittany which it links to. There is absolutely no reason for this page.

The tag you used, {{db-r2}}, is for redirects from the main (article) Namespace to other namespaces like draft or user. The only other speedy for redirects is {{db-r3}} for recently-created implausible redirects, but this one has been around since 2009. (The restriction to recently-created is because of the possibility that deleting an older redirect might break incoming external links).
If you think it should be deleted, you can nominate it at WP:RFD, but first read the introductory material at the head of that, particularly WP:RFD#KEEP. Generally, it doesn't matter if the title of a redirect is not strictly correct - the test is, might it help someone find what they are looking for? Cabochien Revolt[edit]

Greetings.Are you sure the Cabochien Revolt is a peasant uprising? It seems that it happened in Paris.--Catlemur (talk) 16:45, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose you are mostly correct, although it did spread out from the city somewhat, but it was mostly a revolt of the butchers of Paris (Simon Caboche being one of them). They fall into the nebulous category of neither aristocracy nor peasantry nor are they really bourgeois in the same sense that we generally thing of them. This revolt isn't the only such one like it, especially in France. Is there another template for city revolts or is it possible to break the current template into two interrelated sections. I found the template by looking for the Harelle, which was a revolt in Rouen which then became the Maillotins Revolt in Paris, the latter of which was definitely more of a merchant revolt than a peasant revolt. Indeed, the entire part of the Armagnac-Burgundian War within Paris functioned much the same, while Parisian revolts from Louis IX's reign all the way beyond the French Revolution all shared similar characteristics that would set them as quasi-peasant revolts led by the merchant class. I would appreciate any recommendations you have on this. My current research is comparing the Jacquerie and the Cabochien Revolt, but according to this template, only the former is a "peasant" revolt.  – Whaleyland (Talk • Contributions) 00:22, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I am not entirely sure how to handle this. I would say that Cabochien is just a popular uprising. I noticed that peasant revolts are fairly syncretic in nature, most of them are tax revolts, however some bare elements of nationalism, religious motivations e.t.c. A lot of sources on the issue are from Marxists, one can also consider the fact that Maoists believe that the revolution must be initiated by peasants.--Catlemur (talk) 22:33, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say in medieval France, literally all revolts were tax revolts, including the Cabochien Revolt. And even if this one was lead by bourgeois, it was certainly supported by the peasant masses and briefly supported by John of Burgundy. If you don't mind, I'd say leave it in the list for now. It certainly qualifies if using the criteria for other revolts in the list so I don't think it hurts anything and it certainly would have helped me had I realised this was a revolt when I began my research. I am not insisting on this anymore, I am going through many disruptive, aggressive edits from dodgy usernames and IPs I know after having an long-running editor blocked for personal attacks and harassment. Of course that has nothing to do with you, but you could have engaged in dispute resolution, since the previous 100-edits editor just quit discussion and showed no engagement. Now on what WP basis other than personal do you dismiss the use of Jewish? It is about a certain social group of people with a common identity, not religion. It is in the reference, and provides useful, descriptive information on the character. I understand also that you reject the use of the dualistic Christian that and Muslim that in history matters. Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.
