Timc: I just put the commas back in the SI base unit article, in accordance with the Wikipedia Manual of Style. I too would prefer spaces since they are less ambiguous than commas are, but consistency is better. —Bkell 18:12, 25 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I was thinking along the same lines, particularly since the two articles I saw it added to -- Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Watkins Glen International -- do host a NASCAR race, but are hardly known primarily for those events. Is someone going to add a similar block of the IRL, Formula One, Sports Car, etc. races to those pages? I think some perspective may be in order. Rdikeman 13:44, May 28, 2004 (UTC)

Oh yes, quite okay, I meant to add that to them too. As we add more racing leagues (IRL, ARCA, etc) those should have track list links added as well. In fact, I think I know what I might work on tonight... I note that you changed the table on Indianapolis Motor Speedway from HTML to Wikitable. I thought of doing this once, but figured not much space was saved, though it is nice to not have to deal with countless td/trs. Just wondering, what caused you to make that decision? I did it as an experiment, and since it is nice not to have the td/trs, and it looked pretty much the same, I left it. I'm trying to use the wiki markup as much as possible. I don't think it saves very much space. --Timc 20:22, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Peculiar asterisk[edit]

Hello, I just wondered what the asterisk in category links might mean. I noticed you entered such an asterisk in List of home computers, like this: [[Category:Home computers|*]]. Please enlighten me. --Wernher 23:46, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I put the asterisk in so that it appears at the top of the categories page, rather than under "L". I have seen others do this, and I think it makes sense to have "List of" pages appear at the top. --Timc 11:57, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

hand slapped[edit]

Ok, I replaced all the articles with ones written myself. I din't see the copyright at the bottom of the page I was ripping off.

Yes, I saw that. Sorry, but I copied the content to the temporary subpages and reinstated the copyright violation notices. I think that's the correct way to do things. What will happen is that after the required period (I think it's 7 days), the temporary page will be moved to the main page.

If you read some more about copyrights, you'll find that there doesn't need to be a copyright notice for text to be copyrighted. Pretty much any recently written text you find will be copyrighted unless it is explicitly stated otherwise. --Timc 19:37, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

The... articles[edit]

I had intentionally removed these /Temp articles (together with the original copyvios) because I thought we generally didn't have the "The" in article titles? Could you please enlighten me why you recreated these redirects? (This is a serious question - I suppose you do have a reason, but don't see it, and so I'm wondering whether my understanding is somewhat off.) Lupo 13:47, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Parliament seating charts[edit]

I noticed back in July you altered the parliament seating charts to put the governing party in the "front" of the house, and it only occured to me now that you actually put them in the rear. Remember, the governing party sits at the speakers right, so the front of the house is on the left of the charts. Or am I mistaken? Earl Andrew 21:25, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Actually, if you read the history entry, I changed the image to put the Official Opposition at the front of the house. That seemed right to me—is it? In the pictures, the Government is on the right at the front of the house; if the Government occupies more than half the seats, then they carry over at the back of the other side. Actually, government overflow sat at the front of the House next to the Speaker during (at least) the 35th and 37th parliaments. The reason for this is because the Leader of the Opposition sits across from the Prime Minister and the PM sits 12 seats down from the speaker... with a small official opposition party, if it started at the front of the house, its last seat would be closer to the fron than the PM. Election project[edit]

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. So far over 90% of people who have responded have done this.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} template (or {{MultiLicensePD}} for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1

I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:

Option 2

I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions to any [[U.S. state]], county, or city article as described below:

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} with {{MultiLicensePD}}. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. Golden Horseshoe (Ontario). Hi Tim. I added Ontario because I thought most people outside Canada, indeed Ontario, would not really appreciate where this was. I was searching under Category Metropolitan areas and saw Golden Horseshoe. Every other metropolitan area mentioned the city or geographical area except Golden Horseshoe. Disambiguation is of no use unless there are two places with the same name (maybe there are!). I considered adding (Canada) in parentheses, then opted for Ontario, as this is frequently done for places with the same name. Adding a qualifier does not affect the original name any more than adding a qualifier to a personal name e.g. David Thompson (cartographer). However, if you feel strongly about it, you can reverse it. It is interesting that the Canadian Oxford Dictionary attributes the "golden" part of the name to the region's wealth, not the lights seen from the air.--BrentS 03:47, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)
