Article commentary[edit]

I removed the following a section of commentary from the article, which should be discussed here, not in the article itself.

It should be noted that many things in this Wikipedia entry have been checked with Estonian-language sources, as there is a tendency for those that do not know the Estonian language to copy facts and figures from one another, at times perpetuating mistakes or misunderstandings.

The list at the end of this Wikipedia entry contains works about Jaan Kross and recent Estonian history that have been published in Estonia, Finland, Holland, Germany and the UK and are mostly print sources, either books or articles in leading newspapers. Anyone writing a thorough and informative article about Jaan Kross must consult sources written in Estonian, Finnish, German, and Swedish, because what is written about Jaan Kross in English is severely limited to a number of biographical details on the Estonian Literature Information Centre (ELIC) website, plus a few articles, reviews and obituary notices in the International Herald Tribune, the Guardian, Times Literary Supplement, and several online articles and reviews. It seems common sense to consult non-English-language sources, as Kross wrote in Estonian - a language spoken by only about one million native-speakers - and has been much more frequently translated into the other three languages mentioned above than into English. While the resulting article must be accesible to those who know only the English language, scholars and translators who know the source language, Estonian in this case, can provide a valuable bridging service.
