Goals of this page[edit]

For ISU-centric people (not Henry Gilman or Carrie Chapman Catt) who are well known outside of ISU) I think a somewhat detailed biography is needed, much like what I've done with some of the first presidents but more (though not done with all of them). Probably involves a trip to Special Collections and getting some of the bio stuff them.

  • Year of birth & death
  • Location of birth & death
  • Education: college, year, major/degree
  • Notable achievements: awards, roles/positions
  • Family notes

If known outside of ISU (has its own wikipedia page or should have one) then a link should be sufficient with perhaps a condensed biography as it directly applies to ISU.

For buildings:

  • Year constructed
  • Original purposes if different from current
  • Major changes/renovations
  • Who it's named after should be evident from where it's located (subcategory of the person)
  • Cost, uses, departments, etc.
  • Did it replace another building? (e.g., Beardshear replaced Office Building)
  • Was it originally named something and then renamed afterward (e.g., Frederiksen Court, Beardshear Hall, Agriculture Hall, Engineering Hall)

For streets:

  • Location in Ames
  • Perhaps a list of what's on the street if applicable (e.g., campustown is on Welch)

And pictures, pictures, pictures. Come snow fall I'll take my camera around and shoot some of the buildings, and again come late spring/summer.

Future size[edit]

The article is already 50 KB plus images in size. I'm worried at how big it will be in the future and how to break it up without making links difficult to create....and having to change them all to point at the other articles.

Thoughts? Cburnett 00:16, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)

Hm, I thought the thumbnails were included in the article size. I personally feel okay with the current setup, it has excellent headers and most sections are brief. Adm58 01:02, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)

Page length[edit]

Heh, I just noticed this page is #487 on the list of longest pages. :) Cburnett 01:47, May 3, 2005 (UTC)

I'm going to work on splitting off a few of the more notable buildings at ISU into their own articles because this page is pretty massive at the moment. At this time, I'm planning on making articles about the Campanile, the Memorial Union, Stephens Auditorium, and perhaps a few more. Also, I noticed that Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum have their own articles already, so I'll add links to the full articles within this article. Etphonehome 01:37, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Page length[edit]

I agree with others that the page is way to long and steps need to be made to reduce the size. I feel that there should be three steps to this:

  • First, create/ improve articles for individual buildings. If building requires more than a paragraph to explain, it should probably have its own page.
  • Second, redevelop the page into more of a list and less of an article with links to the information. This could be done in a table format so that basic information could still be given for other lesser buildings.
  • Last, for the few building that we can't justify their own page, but really need additional space, we could add it below the list. I can't imagine more than 10 buildings falling into this category. This would only be done if needed

On a final note, I suggest renaming the page to Iowa State University Campus (if we keep landmarks) or at least Iowa State University buildings. This would maintain similar naming format of other ISU pages.

  • Sense no one else has updated this page in two years and no one else of note has updated the main page for a long time, I'm going to run with this by creating a complete list in a table format at the top of the page. Below that I will leave additional building info that is important and remove the rest. I believe that this will greatly reduce the size.--Jaretac (talk) 15:48, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Mostly done, still have some formating that needs to be done and I keep noticing little mistakes here and there. The big task should now be to create/improve building articles. Articles that need to be created include Parks Library, Marston Hall, Memorial Union, and others. The idea is to slowly make this page a simple overview of the campus buildings with links to more detailed articles about individual buildings.--Jaretac (talk) 02:53, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      • Didn't really reduce the size in KB, since it was 50KB and is now 75KB, but I do feel that it is easier to read, navigate and the overall length of the page is much shorter. Most of the additional KB came from special formating and not from added information.--Jaretac (talk) 20:14, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Individual Building Articles[edit]

I have started a draft for an article about the Memorial Union. Please take a look and let me know what you think.DUKyleXY (talk) 07:51, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Looks good so far, however, it appears you are having problems with your pictures. I'm alright but I'm not the best writer; I mostly pride myself on formating and organization. Maybe you can go over the main article and make improvements there too.--Jaretac (talk) 01:32, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks, as far a pictures go, I am leaving picures as inline text for now because the article is in my User namespace, not the main Wiki namespace. As for the "main article," are you referring to this article? If so, I will once Memorial Union is "published" in the main Wiki. Again, thanks. DUKyleXY (talk) 16:15, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List of Current Buildings...[edit]

I am wondering if it would be better to create a stand-alone list article for the full list of buildings on campus, and leave major buildings on the main article. Each major building should eventually have it's own main article, but this article would list a summary statement for each major building. DUKyleXY (talk) 18:25, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I like the idea of having a main page that is strictly the article and then having this master list, but the only way I could see that being worth while is if you go in depth about the campus itself. You would want to keep the focus on the campus and just talk about buildings in respect to the entire campus (leave in-depth talk about buildings to that buildings main article). At that point you may be better off just creating a new article called "Iowa State University Campus" and then provide a link to the this complete listing. Originally, this article was the master list with each building under a heading, which meant that the TOC was about 2000 px long. I redesigned the article this spring, but over the years people added info about campus areas that doesn't fit with the building list. I didn't want to delete that info, so I added the section about campus and renamed the entire page. I think we should keep this particular page the way it was originally attended, as the master list, but starting a main page about the campus isn't a bad idea. Also, keep in mind that some buildings and campus info will find its way into college/programs article. For example, see Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. This is something (working on college articles) I plan to continue to improve through the coming months. Finally, to answer your question above, I was hoping you could skim through all the text in this article and in articles off this, and make any correction you feel are necessary.--Jaretac (talk) 00:52, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
