Participation of the Soviet Union[edit]

Fligribit wrote his nonsense about mysterious political interference on behalf of the Soviet authorities that prevented the Soviet team from competing in the Olympics (or he implied that) and wants to keep it that way. Why in the world can't I mention that the USSR started competing in 1954 (and started winning right away)? Why would you want to leave an impression that due to this "interference" the Soviet Union never competed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gekeperi (talkcontribs)

Because his cited information was relevant specifically to the 1952 games. Your information was not relevant to the 1952 games and as he stated is more appropriate to the overall team page for the Soviet team and it is of course already located there. -DJSasso (talk) 15:33, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is hard to say for certain what the "political interference" is specifically directed at, but it is central to the cited statement. Fligibit did not write any nonsense, it is a statement directly from the IIHF, I do not believe that there is any implication that the Soviet team was prevented from playing for any reason. If you wish to have a discussion about content I hope that you can drop the accusations.18abruce (talk) 15:43, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In a larger context it would be good to have some content somewhere that discusses why the Soviet Union did not compete in the 1952 Winter Olympics at all, not just hockey. It could be for very mundane reasons but I cannot easily find details anywhere.18abruce (talk) 15:49, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
yeah, whatever, stick to curling — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gekeperi (talkcontribs) 15:54, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@18abruce: There are more details and sources about it in Soviet Union at the Olympics, but the short of it is there was no Soviet Union Olympic Committee until early 1951. They probably just did not have enough time to put everything together or qualify in under a year, but they made their first Olympic appearance in the 1952 summer games. Thank you @Yosemiter:, I gathered something like that. I think in general user Gekeperi is misinterpreting the material as implying that the Soviets were prevented from playing, while the truth appears to be that they were not prepared to compete but the IIHF tried to include them. I was hoping that there would be something to follow up the statement by the IIHF to prevent others from misreading as this user has. I don't read it that way, but perhaps others might.18abruce (talk) 16:12, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And FYI I have a world champion curler in my family but my focus on this sight has been primarily international hockey. Not sure why that would matter.18abruce (talk) 16:15, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Because we're dealing with a troll who, on form, responds routinely with invective and insult. Ravenswing 18:09, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and added a sourced statement that makes sure that the reader knows that it was the Soviets themselves who were responsible for not participating.18abruce (talk) 22:09, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
