Should we have Flemish painters[edit]

Two questions for someone who knows their Netherlands better than me.

Should the van Eycks be sorted under 'van' rather than 'E'
For Renaissance painters (and others), is it OK to include Flemish painters under Dutch painters or should we have a separate Category:Flemish painters? -- Solipsist 17:54, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Two tentative answers:

In my art history books (including Janson), they are sorted under E, so we may stick to that.
Being Flemish myself, and considering Flanders' mostly separate history and different artistic developments (e.g. the Flemish Primitives), I'd prefer creating a separate category for them.

sort order[edit]

40 of these painters with a surname prefixed by the article "van" sort on the surname, not the "van".

8 of these painters, including "Vincent van Gogh", sort on the article "van" first, then the surname.

It should probably be consistent. for all categories that include someone with a Dutch name. Personally, I think we should sort on the article first. -- Geo Swan 02:16, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
