Company Nomenclature[edit]

The company always writes its name in capitals as ALSTOM but this is just an affectation as it is not a six-letter abbreviation for anything. Andy G 18:12, 28 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Although after what's been said on talk:Naming_conventions Odd capitalization of commercial names we should probably honour this and move the article back to ALSTOM. Bah! Andy G 23:49, 15 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Not necessarily. Copy-editors and writers of style guides for newspapers have long experience on this kind of thing. For example, the company that likes to write its name "BAE SYSTEMS" was not successful in instructing newpapers to capitalize it all; "BAE Systems" seems to be what has stuck in the broadsheets. Other new ways to write trademarked names (which seem to me to be entirely derived from whatever the current logo is...) have been more successful: car magazines used to write 'Quattro' (for various Audi cars), but now 'quattro' is quite common. Of course, computer companies are some of the most "innovative" in their orthographic strictures: eBay, CorelDRAW!, etc. Although a computer magazine might bow to Corel's instructions, no broadsheet would, and rightly so. They've sinced changed back to something more normal. Why should a company logo dictate typography of a company name? Hotlorp 13:55, 17 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Is there any explanation as to why the company's name shed an 'h' at some point? Teflon 18:55, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I would assume that it was so that English-speakers would know how to pronounce it. David Arthur 19:09, August 4, 2005 (UTC)
The H originaly comes from the name of another company. Alsthom was created in 1928 from three companies: CGE (Companie Générale d'Electricité), Alsacienne Société and Thomson houston. In 1998, a major change in shares occured, GEC and Alcatel partly left Alsthom which changed its name for Alstom.Tiwan 18:02, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

As a current employee, I can confirm that the group name is not capitalised. This only appears as a logo. 57.67.17.100 (talk) 14:56, 24 January 2008 (UTC)DeeDee[reply]

Alstom & BART?[edit]

University Cafeteria[edit]

The University of Lincoln has a cafeteria named the Alstom Atrium. Nobody seems quite sure what the connection is but it uses their logo. Are there any others? 194.80.52.106 (talk) 13:47, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the reason for the name of Alstom Atrium

“The university has strong links with Alstom Power, who were strong supporters of the project to create a university in Lincoln in the 1990s. Our atrium in the main academic building is named after the company"

Corruption Investigations[edit]

I was very surprised to see that no mention of the Swiss and French bribery investigations in the article, it reads more like a marketing blurb! Subsequently I have listed the Swiss and French cases in 2007-2008 and the new SFO investigation in order to bring a little balance to the entryTwobells (talk) 11:37, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Changes -added third section, some rewrite, removed list[edit]

I added a section of the "transmission" division.

I think the other two sections still need a minor rewrite, and probably expansion, but not lists. The "references" section are a little odd - I think they could be presented in a diffferent way - maybe more as prose.

I also removed the lists below , for now. The problem is lack of context, and references. A List of Alstom products and projects article may be suitable in the long term.

Passenger rail vehicles

Railway signalling equipment

Rail clients

Sf5xeplus,

I agree on the creation of a List of Products page. There are also many products in the Grid/Transmission sector worth mentioning.

Fix this yourself[edit]

August 22, 2008 Swiss police carried out a series of house searches at various locations throughout Switzerland, including the offices of the Alstom AG in Baden, the Swiss government said in a statement.[1]

Whoever added this didn't feel the need to actually give us the slightest clue what the police search was about or how it relates to any of the corruption investigations mentioned in the article. I'm not here to wipe other peoples arses. So fix it yourself. It's also a copy-paste straight from the link. Cheers . 83.100.200.4 (talk) 23:29, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

also this

On Wednesday the 24th March 2010 three directors were arrested in a UK corruption probe by the Serious Fraud Office. The arrests followed a raid on Alstom offices in Ashby de la Zouch and Rugby UK. The SFO released a statement stating it believed bribes had been paid in order to win foreign contracts.[2]

copyvio again, and no attempt at explanation - eg what bribes, contract, business area etc. Fail.

Legal challenges In recent years, Alstom has made many legal challenges after losing bids to provide rolling stock, including: *In December 2010, against Budapesti Közlekedési Részvénytársaság, which runs public transport in Budapest; it had cancelled an order for 170 Metropolis vehicles, claiming that brakes did not meet Hungarian standards. *In October 2010, against Eurostar's decision to buy rolling stock from Siemens. *In October 2009, against Bombardier, which won a large tender to supply commuter EMUs in Paris *In August 2010, against Trenitalia's decision to order V300Zefiro trains from Bombardier / AnsaldoBreda.

In this case the argument that Alstom has made many legal challenges needs to be shown using reliable sources, rather than a synthesis based on a collection of legal cases. I'm not familiar with company law, so it's not clear that this is notable, unusual, normal or otherwise. Thanks.83.100.200.4 (talk) 23:34, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

History - error in the companies name in the whole list[edit]

Hi, why is it always "Alsthom" in the history table. I wanted to correct it because I saw it in one part but on edit I saw that it was wrong (It has to be Alstom, but it is Alsthom), is there any reason for this (changed name in the past or something?!)

Greetings Kilon22 (talk) 13:20, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
I am French, and I know not a little bit about French companies. Alsthom is the former name of Alstom. See fr:Alstom. The company has been created by a merging in 1928. Between the company Société ALSascienne de constructions mécaniques (=mecanical engineering ALSatian company) and Thomson-Houston, a US company. Alsatian is for the French region of Alsace around Strasbourg. But this name of ALSTHOM was not convenient for foreign purposes and it has been changed to ALSTOM ...in 1998, seventy years after. --Tangopaso (talk) 18:45, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thanks for the information. That is why I asked and didn't change anything ;) It is understandable that they changed the name to have more success on the international market. Kilon22 (talk) 22:51, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

... , in spite of a letter of intimidation dated 27 April to both CEOs from Arnaud Montebourg, France's minister for the economy.[3] French President Francois Hollande said “The role of the state is to make sure the national interest is upheld. We have sufficient means of pressure to ensure that the outcome is good for Alstom, good for French industry, and good for the diversity of energy,” yet Article 21 of the EU Merger Regulation allows governments to block takeovers if public security or the free media is threatened, and there is no veto for energy.[4]

  • No this is not encyclopedic.
    • A. "letter of intimidation" what? this is not neutral and not accurate.
    • B. yet Article 21 of the EU Merger Regulation allows governments to block takeovers if public security mor the free media is threatened - this is original research, it's not in the suorce, and doesn't even appear to match the sitution as neither public security or free media has been threatened. I can not find any source claiming this.

Please avoid synthesis[edit]

Please avoid synthesis of facts, unreferenced assertaions, and unsourced political comment Removal:

In June 2014 Siemens and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced their formation of joint ventures to bid for Alstom's troubled energy and transportation businesses (in locomotives, steam turbines, and aircraft engines). A rival bid by General Electric (GE) has been criticized by French government sources, who consider Alstom's operations as a "vital national interest" at a moment when the French unemployment level stands above 10% and some voters are turning towards the far-right.[1][2][3]
  • Nowhere is Alstom's energy and transportation businesses described as "troubled"
  • Alstom doesn't make aircraft engines.
  • The reference to Marie Le Pen appears to be synthesis - Alstom is not mentioned in the article. Please do original political comment elsewhere. This appears to be an example of Wikipedia:Coatrack Prof.Haddock (talk) 07:40, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Use of name Alstrom with an "r"[edit]

In one place in the article the company name is spelled "Alstrom" with an "r". Was this ever an appropriate name for the company or another related rail company? I ask because I came here specifically looking for references to the name with an "r" as I remember it once being called that way.

Some pages using the name both with and without the "r":

Alstom Australia merge proposal[edit]

Alstom Australia is a largely uncited, stub article about a relatively small branch office of Alstom. Propose the cited bits be incorporated into this article and Alstom Australia set as a redirect. Bagufleat (talk) 03:55, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: Was literally just created by @ThylacineHunter within the last 24-48 hours. While it's not technically a content fork, I also question its notability. I'm not fully aware of Alstom's international operations, but there could be be more significant/important subsidiaries of Alstom than the one in Australia and/or New Zealand, which don't have their own articles. I'm leaning towards a support, but I don't have enough information to do so. I wouldn't think a separate article on something like McDonald's Australia is necessary, right? A discussion of interest can be found at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Australian Transport#Scope of project. Fork99 (talk) 19:16, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Comment, Alstom's Asia Pacific operations account for 14% of its revenues, so Australia will only be single digit. With 1,600 employees, Australia and New Zealand account for 2% of Alstom's total workforce of 80,000. By both these metrics, it is small. Bagufleat (talk) 01:48, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagufleat: You can and should close this as consensus reached, and start merging it yourself. Per WP:MERGE, anyone, including the initiator of the proposal can close a merge discussion, determine consensus and merge. Make sure to follow the guidelines outlined there. You could have just boldly merged it yourself in the beginning as well. Fork99 (talk) 16:31, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Alstom Australia and New Zealand[edit]

The UGL Australia article says UGL owns Alstom in Australia or something. Can someone verify this? Because

  • This article does not mention it (consider adding some sort of mention to it if it is sort of right)
  • The website does not mention it or operate in an independent manner
  • The above issue does not mention it
  • Alstom acquired Bombardier Transport (and seems to now use the Alstom name)
