Merge[edit]

This article and Washington, DC are near-duplicates. Would it make sense to merge them? --Brion 23:22 Sep 12, 2002 (UTC)

Move discussion in progress[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:District of columbia which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 13:35, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation[edit]

@Deisenbe: I have reverted a bold edit to replace this redirect by a disambiguation page. There is certainly a case for the change, but with over 3,000 incoming links it might be better to discuss it first. If we do go ahead, we need to plan in advance how to fixing the resulting mis-directed links. Certes (talk) 10:45, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I had bot thought about misdirected links resulting. That was remiss of me. I’m sorry. deisenbe (talk) 11:01, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Conversely to Certes, I think there is not a case for the change. The proposed disambiguation page would not assist users in any meaningful way. The history of the District, including the former City of Washington, is already covered in the Washington, D.C. article. And the District of Columbia (until 1871) article is in considerble need of improvement and probably should be merged into Washington, D.C., since it is not really an independent topic. Yes, it was technically a different legal entity than the city, but both entities are part of the history of the current capital city. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 12:32, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

COMPLAINTS[edit]

1. That while searching for info on DoC, I was redirected to Washington which - a) is not what I wanted, b) does not include an indexed section on DoC

2. Only by visiting this Talk page did I discover the existing DoC (up to....) page - which gave me the info I was looking for - so this is a terrible way for people to accidentally stumble across the the information they seek.

As a result of these complaints, I've changed the page to offer the researcher the links to both pages as this is the most logical way to deal with at the moment.

If at some point in the future, a section on the Washington D.C. page is added entitled District of Columbia then it would be reasonable to reinstate a redirect direct to that section, not to the page itself.

Please remember information needs to be presented accurately for people who do not know the detail of the situation - and therefore redirecting to apparently completely wrong pages is totally unacceptable. Please don't do it again.
