Is this person of German ancestry? Meursault2004 23:18, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

  • Possibly. There were some Germans (a few % of population?) living in Lithuania until 1940. I don't have any facts, though. Andris 23:28, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Yes, Vytautas' Landsbergis' ancestors were invited from Germany to Lithuania by Russian Tsar Alexander II to help prevent from another uprising (like it was in 1863). Baltic 17:38, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. The name Landesberg is more commonly associated with Jews. 68.111.71.197 (talk) 01

Not really. Its a common name in Germany. There are several places called Landsberg and a nobility family. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.245.86.40 (talk) 08:02, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

Vytautas Landsbergis was not the President of Lithuania (there was not such a title until 1992), but the Chairman of the Council of Lithuania. -- Wisconsus TALK|things 14:12, 3 June 2008 (UTC) Many people in Lithuania believe that he is jew —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.125.15.187 (talk) 04:47, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Ona Jablonskytė-Landsbergienė was not "a Righteous Among the Nations who in 1944 sheltered , etc". He was a person who in 1944 sheltered, etc. The pretentious term "Righteous Among the Nations" is a unofficial Israeli honour, not a name or title.101.98.169.98 (talk) 02:52, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Awards[edit]

Could someone with access to sources please add the correct award titles? I cannot match the current text with any awards articles (except Legion of Honour). For this reason alone, letalone lack of sources, the article cannot be rated B. Folks at 137 (talk) 09:19, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Background?[edit]

Landsbergis is obviously a Lithuanianized version of Landsberg, which is not a Lithuanian name. So I have long been wondering, ever since I was a Jewish kid growing up in Lithuania - is his background German or Jewish? Or what?... --KpoT (talk) 13:23, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Some background here. It was a petty noble family with German roots somewhere down the line. It was Polonized, then chose to become Lithuanians. So not Jewish. Renata (talk) 00:26, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Focus[edit]

I'm an admirer of Dr. Landsbergis for his pivotal role in the Lithuanian independence movement, but in terms of EV I suggest that a more informative article be developed. As a reader and student of recent European history — and a former short-term resident of Vilnius (in the mid-'90s) — I'd like to see more about Landsbergis's political views, especially with respect to economics, and about what he did when he occupied high position in newly independent Lietuva. For example, what was his stance regarding privatization?

Perhaps there could also be a bit more on his biography of Čiurlionis, a fascinating personality. Has it been translated?

The last paragraph about Russia is unsourced (as is the entire closing section) and oddly written in present tense, as if he were currently running for office. And more than a third of the present article is devoted to the insignia ban,[1] which to me seems a peripheral issue and, since it wasn't adopted, not hugely significant.

PS: As a footnote to the above discussion of Landsbergis's ethnic background, I find it interesting that he is listed in the info box as a Lutheran in a country that is predominantly (77 percent) if nominally RC, and wonder whether this had any bearing on his political career. Lutherans appear to be a very small minority in modern Lithuania.[2]
