What about the 7,652 yards long Rivelin Tunnel?[edit]

The http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=7453 website has an article that first appeared in the Transactions of The Hunter Archaeological Society and is reproduced by kind permission of the Society. The tunnel also gets a mention on the http://research.ncl.ac.uk/hydroinformatics/rbhd/derwent/upper.html page and the http://www.jnbentley.co.uk/345/rivelin.html page (but they call it the Dewent Tunnel; I have emailed them with a suggestion they correct their page). It deserves a mention in the list, but where should it be placed? It starts in Derbyshire but the outfall is in South Yorkshire. I am sure other tunnels connect different counties. Is 'county' a good choice for a table column?

Railway tunnels[edit]

I've added (above) all railway tunnels greater than 1 mile, according to my own data, and put the distances on the article page for tunnels already listed. This may disagree slightly with distances quoted within the articles - I haven't checked these. I've done a bit of tidying, and tried to get a consistent presentaion, however this is crying out to be put in table format, if anyone has the knowledge and time to do this. Change heading[edit]

Lists put into talk[edit]

The article is now flagged as incomplete. I was minded to make a new template saying "singularly incomplete". All the stuff above should be in the article or in a sandbox, not in this Talk. Separate metric and imperial columns[edit]

If nobody objects, I propose separating put metric and imperial measures. The metric column will be sortable and will be strictly in metres, the imperial will be non-sortable and will have miles or miles and yards as appropriate. Martinvl (talk) 12:50, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup required[edit]

I've been making some changes to this page, but it raises some issues in my mind to make the page both accurate and useful.

  • It needs to be definitive. I have found some gaps, but I suspect there are many more.
  • The fields need populating
  • County names are innaccurate, especially for Wales
  • Spliting into the constituent nations would aid navigation and checking
  • We need a way of dealing with tunnels which quite frequently have ends in different counties

Coords[edit]

I've been playing with coords on this article, as has Andy. Couple of questions: I decided to tag a London Heathrow tunnel with two coords, one for each portal. And then Norwood in Derbyshire with 3 coords. And I'm using small coords, AndyM is using normal sized (and has decided views on these things ;). What do we make of either of these things? If we have tunnels that are difficult to figure out from a centrepoint, should we use the two portals and maybe the centre point? Or does that make the page too lengthy? But then, couldn't we find three short lines of text to describe each tunnel? Is small an accessibility sin, and if so, why? Infoboxen seem to have smaller text in them. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:04, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If we are going to have coordinates, then we need to use a small script - I don't thuink that anybody will actually read the coordinates, but they might well click on them. I agreee that the number of coordinates poses a problem, possible the mid-point between the portals (which is not neccessarily the midpoint of the tunnel - the Hindhead Tunnel for example follows a 60o arc. One could of course log the midpoint and either the approximate direction of the portals (N,S) or the direction of the tunnel in the range 0o to 180o. Revocations of 29 January 2013[edit]

I revoked User:Stevo1000's changes for the following reasons:

  • HS2 tunnel under Manchester - This is still WP:CRYSTAL - it needs to pass the public inquiry and a government bill needs to be passed before work can begin. I do not think that this tunnel should be included in this list until the government is committed to its construction.
  • Channel Tunnel - I have added a note stating that a significant part of the tunnel is actually in France. If we want to include numbers, then we should include the sections under the sea as well as the sections under land - which is what we do with the Severn Tunnel. BTW, is the Severn Tunnel in England or in Wales?

The Severn estuary is in Wales - England's side is just mudflats. Because the navigable channel, 'the Shoots', is close to the Welsh side, the tunnel is quite asymmetric. It has to go deep only just offshore from Sudbrook, Wales, but the English side is so shallow that it once broke through at wading depth. To maintain a reasonable railway gradient, the Welsh side thus needs a fair length of landward tunnel (and a substantial cutting) and even then it's much steeper heading that way than the other. As is infamously well-known, digging the landward tunnel caused (and still does) much more trouble than the underwater section did.
The tunnel does join England and Wales though, unlike the Severn Bridge (and the Severn Railway Bridge) which run (or ran) from England to England. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:46, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The point that I was making is that we include the whole length of the Severn Tunnel in the, we don't list the Welsh part under Gwent and the English part under Gloucestershire. Likewise, we should list the whole of teh Channel Tunnel, not just the part that is in UK territory (including territorial waters) and even less just the part that run under under English dry land.

Mersey rail tunnels[edit]

The longest tunnel on the Merseyrail metro runs from Birkenhead Park under the river, through Liverpool's centre and south to Brunswick station. It must be between 5 to 6 miles long. The Victoria/Waterloo tunnel is over 2 miles long while the Wapping tunnel of 1829 is 1.25 miles long. query about the criteria for inclusion[edit]

Given that some of the tunnels on this list are... not very long at all - and aren't worthy of articles of their own - what do people think of a minimum tunnel length of criteria for inclusion? I quite like following the info at the top of the page (0.1miles/160m), but I think I'd be okay with a minimum of 100m. (Obviously tunnels that are well referenced and verified enough for an article but are shorter than this length would remain in the list) What do people think? Table heading[edit]

Following comments by @Ehrenkater, I think that's a reasonable change. I would not be supportive of changing locations to exact places (e.g. Birkenhead) rather than general regions, counties etc (e.g. Merseyside). That detail would sit best in the individual article about the tunnel in question. Turini2 (talk) 16:40, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ideally, it would be informative to show the exact location in the table rather than just the county (especially in parts of the UK where the county has changed several times and there are principal areas, regions etc.) However I realise that
  • that would be quite a lot of work;
