History[edit]

Jackie Kennedy is listed as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the picture from 1967 with Caroline christening the ship. 1980s On 24 April 1988, the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy responded to a distress call from the submarine USS Bonefish which was experiencing a deadly fire off the coast of Florida. Eighty-nine crew members were rescued by whaleboat and helicopter crews from USS Carr and the USS John F. Kennedy. One Search and Rescue Swimmer from HS-7, Anti-Submarine Warfare Operator Third Class (AW3) Larry Grossman spent over three hours in the ocean and was credited with saving 19 lives. He later received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for Heroism. Three sailors —Lieutenant Ray Everts, Petty Officer 1st Class Bob Bordelon, and Petty Officer 3rd Class Marshal T. Save The JFK[edit]

The JFK CV-67 Memorial Foundation, Inc. seeks to transform the recently decommissioned vessel into the "John F. Kennedy Maritime Museum," a world-class facility honoring the ship, 500,000-plus dedicated sailors and aviators who served on her, and of course her namesake, President John F. Kennedy. It hopes to place her, in perpetuity, in a suitable site where her legacy can be maintained and where she can continue to serve as a vital symbol of America, an educational site, an inspiring museum and a living memorial to the patriotic Americans who served aboard her.

Disposition[edit]

As the JFK is one of the oldest active carriers, and likely to be replaced relatively soon, perhaps we could have some information about the Navy's intentions with regard to her disposition? Museum, scrap, etc.? Streltzer 16:52, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I found some articles discussing a proposal to re-assign the JFK to the U.S. Coast Guard as a floating disaster recovery base. That doesn't seem like a good expenditure of money (we have smaller Wasp-class ex-Navy boats that would do a better (and cheaper) job in that capacity. Also, does the Coast Guard want such a boat? The WASP class was started with the USS Wasp, commissioned in 89, there are 8, all are active, and a 9th is under construction. There are NO Wasp class available, and what says they would be better and cheaper? They are fairly newly designed, and launched. The JFK would likely do a fair job, if chosen, however, it is more likely to become a museum, and a target for "treehugger", it is one of the last large Ships to use Oil... likely the main reason it was decommed... Actually, seven Wasps (LHDs) are in service, with the eighth, USS Makin Island (LHD-8), scheduled to commission in late 2008. There is the new LHA-6 class, which is based on the Makin Island, being developed, but the first one is still years off, assuming it survives the next presidential administration's budget. There are, however, three Tarawa class ships (LHAs) in mothballs, the third having coming out fairly recently. Since the LHA/LHDs are designed for helicopter operations, they would probably be better suited for such roles, as those are generally the ships the USN sends in first in these types of situations anyway. Anyway, that link is about 2 years old, and is from an op-ed-type piece anyway - the fact that nothing much has been mentioned since probably shows it was just a long-shot idea anyway. - BillCJ (talk) 03:46, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Decommissioning date[edit]

There's a discrepancy with the decommissioning date. The article lists August 1, 2007 per the Navy Vessel Register, but there was a ceremony on March 23. Is the ceremony not the actual date of decommission?

Jackie Kennedy's name[edit]

Jackie Kennedy did not marry Aristotle Onassis until 1968. The JFK CV 67 was laid down in '64 and launched in '67. The article lists her has the sponsor of the JFK with Onassis as her last name. The Navy's commisioning papers for the JFK CV 67 show her name as sponsor as Kennedy. Historic Preservationists like myself see a huge difference in such points. It's not accurate as written. CVA-67 was authorized in the FY63 budget as a conventional carrier. Rickover made an attempt to get the order changed to a nuclear carrier based on CVAN-65 but with four A3W reactors. But that never happned; Kennedy was ordered and built as a conventional carrier. Status[edit]

We know that the Kennedy is on 'donation hold', but I read that it is at the Philadelphia Reserve Fleet. What condition is she in? Could she be re-activated if needed? What I'd like to know is if she could be considered as being "in reserve"...? - theWOLFchild 02:03, 26 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Boilers[edit]

The boilers (2per space 4 space 8 boilers in total) made 1200# 900degree steam, The cats that shot the plans did so with that same steam The men.
