pre-1925 women's champions are not listed

The articles on individual players tend to have various diacritical marks it would seem more consistent to list the player's names with the diacritics. Brett Dunbar 12:12, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Timeline[edit]

Is it necessary to include this? This is the only Grand Slam winners list that has one. Besides, the principle behind it is redundant. It is a timeline to show who won at a specific year--which is already shown in the table. Also, a template is made available on a winner's page listing down the winner in a certain year. If editors would like to add a section to this article other than the table, then I suggest adding a table of multiple winners--the player with the most titles, etc., which is more informative. Do you think we should put a flag next to the champions name?--Tennislover 16:31, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In Timeline is a false country information ...Mandlikova 1981 = Australia, right is Czechoslovakia. --Misbeliever (talk) 02:00, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article content not as per article title[edit]

This is an article on the French Open. Okay sure it should contain the pre open titles as well since all encyclopedias and almanacs do so also, but why on earth should we include another tournament in the tables that is NOT the French Open? The World Hardcourt Championships was a completely different tourney and wasn't even always played in France! Sure the French open was only a French club tourney before 1925 and that makes it a non international slam for that time period, but it was still THE French championship and only its results should be included here. No other source other than wiki would dare include the world hardcourt championships in a table with the French open so I propose removing those and Olympic entries as they are pov. Hilde Sperling - Danish tennis player[edit]

Hilde Sperling represented Denmark, when she won the French Championships, as they were named then. She married Sven Sperling 28th of December 1933, and became danish citizen by that date. After that date she ALWAYS represented Denmark.

Here are Le Figaro 3rd of june 1935 - psge 7: "La joueues danoise Mme Sperling" http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k298079k/f7.image.langFR

Nationality is not given in Le Figaro in 1936.

Here are Le Figaro mondag 31st of May 1937 - frontpage clearly states Mme Sperling, Dan. - Dan. for Danemark - Denmark. http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k409503z.langFR

I know it is not valid here in Wikipedia, but I am a journalist, and I have written about her. I have been into the national archives in Denmark and found articles there as well. The autgorities in Denmark has confirmed to me, that she became a danish citizen in 1933. At the time it was something, that happened automaticly. The day after the wedding danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende wrote, that she now would ne representing Denmark. I also spoke to her training partner from the 1930'es - a 92 year old man. She was a dane representing Denmark.

So I change here nationality to dnaish anywhere I find here results after 28th of December 1933.

Per the French Open website (and this article is about the French Championships) she was German in 1935 and in 1937. I switched it back, but there are certainly conflicting answers to this. She was both German and Dutch. Here are some 1935 rankings that have her as German. Here is a 1935 newspaper article that also says she is German. A Getty images photo from 1936 also says German. Obviously Danish newspapers would consider her Danish... since she was. What I'd like to see is what did German newspapers say she was during that time period? The German Tennis Federation today seems to consider her German. Fyunck(click) (talk) 06:09, 26 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't see your links before reverting it. The germans should consider her a german star, as she had impressive results before dec. 28. 1933. I will contact the danish tennnis federation, to hear what they say. It could be an error on the french pages you link to.
In Denmark she was forgotten for half a century. Her German heritage meant, that she by many wasn't seen as a true dane in the end of WW2. There was, as in most of Europa, an anti-german sentiment. She and Sven moved to Sweden and when she died, there wasn't a single article about her in any newspaper in Denmark. So she is almost unknown in Denmark today.
In the danish press, she was always considered a dane. They never used "Krahwinkel", but only "Sperling". When I wrote my article on her, I also checked the german newspapers. German newspapers describes her in three ways: "danish", "danish and former german" and "german". It is evenly distributed among those three.
I will post whatever I hear from the danish tennis federation her on the talk page. Fightdane (talk) 06:46, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have now written to the press officer of the danish tennnis federation. I hope for a fast answer. Meanwhile: Their view on her nationality is seen her in the listings of national champions:

Foreign nationals were allowed in the tournament, and "Tyskland" means "Germany". So in 1932 and 1933 she won the danish championship as a German citizen. From 1934 she was a dane - and her name was changed from Hilde Krahwinkel to Hilde Sperling. Fightdane (talk) 07:09, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
She absolutely had dual citizenship. The trouble is there was no equivalent FedCup event back then like there was Davis Cup. The Tennis Hall of Fame considers her citizenship as German. There are more news sources calling her German in 1938. And in 2013 Reuters does the same. I know there are also plenty that say Denmark, which is why I stuck with what the French Open tells us. Instead I thought about it and put both flags in the list. What the danish tennis federation tells us really doesn't help us since we can't use it as a source, plus the German Tennis Federation might say the exact opposite. Fyunck(click) (talk) 08:40, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Actually we can in a way. I got response from the press officer. My mail will be forwarded to the board of the danish tennis federation. They will then decide whether they will take action and contact the french tennis federation to have them to change it. If they can persuade the french, that she competed as a dane, then the matter will be settled. Fightdane (talk) 10:00, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And if we take Wimbledon as an indicator, she competed as a dane from 1934: http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/scores/draws/archive/players/f936ef69-3da6-40c3-afe5-70c42fb423ae/LS.html They change the nationality in 1934. I believe, that the french federation has messed it up. But for now, it is a fine solution with both flags. Let's wait and see, what happens. Fightdane (talk) 10:16, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I also contacted the German tennis federation to see what they say. Fyunck(click) (talk) 10:24, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I have confirmation, that my mail has been forwarded to the chairman and vice chairman of the danish federation. Fightdane (talk) 10:43, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just while waiting I tried to see, how the french regarded Martina Navratilova. Every source else says, that Navratilova represented the USA from autumn 1975. But here she was Czech in 1981: http://ww2.fft.fr/rolandgarros/pdfpalmares/femmes1981_en.pdf Fightdane (talk) 19:19, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have a copy of Lowe's Lawn Tennis Annual 1935 and in the Players of the Year section it has a paragraph on Sperling (pp. 98–99) which is titled "Mme. H. SPERLING (Denmark)". The first sentence reads "Mme Sperling, née Krahwinkel, who now, of course, adopts the Danish nationality of her husband, remains the leading player of the Continent.". Later on she is described as "Germany's former representative...". --Wolbo (talk) 22:20, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In the light of these informations I have now reverted Mrs (Krahwinkel-)Sperlings nationality at the 1935 through -37 listing to Danish, as she per 1934 participated under Danish citizenship by the name Hilde Sperling, thereby also bringing things into accordance with the records of her Wimbledon appearances throughout the same period. Any reference to what may have been put on print in some contemporary tournament schedule ought to be completely irrelevant as it's actually not up to the Roland Garros societé to decide or bring into question the nationality of players, whom they irrespective hereof are fully recognizing as rightful champions. Flight714 (talk) 19:34, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Per the French Open official draw sheet sources, she registered and played under the German flag. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:31, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
