Ewa Beach[edit]

user:BSNRaheim and an anon have been posting an article about Our Lady of Perpetual help all over the place, including Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ewa Beach. I messed things up by chosing that article as the one to move and, since I am not an admin, I cannot tidy it thing in the strictly correct way. I have restored the ... Ewa beach article so it is visibly correct. If you are fussy about audit trail, do a trivial edit to it to establish your authorship. -- RHaworth 08:38, 2005 Jun 20 (UTC)

Gerald, interested?[edit]

Posted at talk page for User:Marshman:

In other news, how about a meeting of Honolulu Wikipedians? Restaurant somewhere? Zora 7 July 2005 04:19 (UTC)
A date! Actually, an interesting idea. How many of us do you estimate there are? I'm game. I had a guy from SF get in touch with me a week or so ago while he was here visiting, but we got our signals screwed up and missed having a beer together. But your idea might really promote good feelings if we all know who the others are (hard to attack friends, right!) - Marshman 7 July 2005 04:26 (UTC)
I'm a fat crippled geekette of advanced years and I don't do dates, but I like intelligent conversation. The only other Honolulu Wikipedian I know is Alex Golub. Do you know any others? Meeting at the Kim Chee II in Kaimuki? Cheap and big naugahyde booths? Or are you a vegetarian? Zora 7 July 2005 06:20 (UTC)
There is Gerald Farinas. He is in Honolulu, I believe. I eat anything, and Chinese is fine. - Marshman 7 July 2005 17:40 (UTC)

Victoria Kaiulani[edit]

There is a (practically non-existant) discussion over at Talk:Victoria Kaiulani over whether the article should be renamed to Princess Victoria Kaiulani, Victoria Kaiulani, Princess of Hawai'i, or Princess Victoria Kaiulani of Hawai'i. I thought you might want to contribute to the discussion. Thanks, 青い(Aoi) 9 July 2005 01:13 (UTC)

Hawaiian royalty naming conventions[edit]

Hello, I'd like to solicit your input. I'm trying to initiative a conversation on developing naming conventions for Hawaiian royals at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Hawaii/Manual of Style and would appreciate your views on the subject. Mahalo nui loa, 青い(Aoi) 04:51, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Source for Basilica photo?[edit]

Hi, can you please indicate where you got the photo you posted at Image:Basilicaofthenationalshrineinterior.jpg?

If you took it yourself and are releasing it to the public domain, please mark it as {{PD-self}}.

Thanks! —Steven G. Johnson 02:32, July 19, 2005 (UTC)

PS. When I saw your User page, I thought for a moment that you had been blocked due to vandalism, not that you had locked it yourself; you might want to make this clearer.

PPS. Similarly, can you also give more information on Image:Basilicaofthenationalshrine.jpg? You noted that it was by someone named Paul Fernandez, but didn't indicate who this is, where you got the photo, and how you know it is public domain. Please realize that images are copyrighted by default under US law, even if they list no copyright or license information.

I was wondering where you got the information on the extended name, as there are zero hits for "Adolph Claus J. Spreckels", and the only hits for "Adolph Claus J. Spreckles" I get are Wikipedia and a couple mirrors; also none of the biographies I found for him mention it. Similar questions about the last name. Apparently, in addition to Spreckels, California and Spreckles Sugar using 'els', his family tombstones use 'els'[1]. Neither the bio in the Gale/Thomson bio database mention alternate spellings, and if I check the hits for "spreckles hanover" and "spreckels hanover -claus" to try and get a general idea of which spelling is common in Germany, the former gets about 80 hits, while the latter gets over 5,000. Also, http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/ usually just uses 'els' with no variant mentioned. Niteowlneils 03:37, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS I movedit to 'els', then decided I should wait for more research and your response and tried to use the new 'move rollback' feature, but that failed (see:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Move_rollback_doesn.27t_seem_to_work)--I'm inclined to leave both articles alone for the time being in case some developer wants to try to debug the problem. Niteowlneils 03:53, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
PPS I went to my local library that has an ancestry db online, but can only be used at a branch (all their other dbs can be accessed from anywhere). I think the data comes from ancestry.com, and claims to have records from Census years, ship manifests, immigration records, etc. In it I could only find 'els', and no first/middle names other than "Claus" other than one has as a variant "Klaus". I did happen to notice there is a related book whose main title is "Adler, Jacob, Claus Spreckel", resulting in the initials AJC Spreckel--maybe that somehow caused confusion over his first name. While I was there I discovered they had "Claus Spreckels: The Sugar King in Hawaii", and the few pages I've skimmed so far never mention anything but "Claus Spreckels" for his name. Also, FWIW, I found a reference to this excerpt that seems to be the most lengthy and likely authoratative text about him on the Web. I was exploring Monterey Co., among other places, this weekend with a friend from Seattle, and we discovered the town of Spreckles--I didn't recognize the name, but she remembered Spreckels Sugar--hence the sudden interest. Please stop uploading images without sources[edit]

You seem to have uploaded literally hundreds of photographs, and in many cases have not given specific source information. Many of these may have to be deleted; at the very least, you've given other editors the headache of trying to track down the source and determine whether or not Wikipedia can use it (hint: the default answer for things off the Web is "no").

Note that "by so-and-so" or "from such-and-such church" or even "from such-and-such publication" is not sufficiently specific—you need to give enough information for someone else to easily find the exact place you got the image (think "verifiability").

At the very least, for images off the web (which is I'm guessing where you got almost all your images), you should give the URL where you got it from. Better yet, give the full citation: the name of the web page, the date the page/article was created (if available), any author byline and copyright information, etcetera.

See Wikipedia:Cite sources/example style if you're not sure what information to include when you cite a source.

Cut-n-paste move[edit]

Hi, when you moved Kamehameha to Kamehameha (disambiguation), you did it with a cut-n-paste move. You should never move an article with a cut-n-paste move - it loses track of the edit history, which we need Wikipedia:Copyright reasons. Every page has a "Move this page" tab - please use it. (If it doesn't work because the target cannot be erased, and you need an admin's assistance, please use WP:RM.)

Now, part of the history of the article is under the first name. I'll have to figure out which revisions of each need to be put together to create a consistent history of the article (discarding others), and straighten it all out. Noel (talk) 05:24, 12 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The image you uploaded, Image:Blackcoral.jpg, has no no source information. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, ie in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. Unless the copyright status is provided, the image will be marked for deletion on 24 October 2005.

JP1meetsJP2.jpg[edit]

G'day there. This little notice is about Image:JP1meetsJP2.jpg - an image you've uploaded. All images on wikipedia need to have
a) source information (where you found the image, where it was published, or its owner)
b) copyright information (choose the appropriate tag from this list)

At the moment some of this information is missing, and images like this are usually deleted within a week. If you want to keep the image on wikipedia, you need to update this information on the image page as soon as possible. (Agnte 12:34, 13 November 2005 (UTC))[reply]

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. Image copyright problem RE: Image:Angelocardinalscola.jpg[edit]

Warning sign
This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Angelocardinalscola.jpg. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law. We need you to specify two things on the image description page:

  • The copyright holder, and
  • The copyright status

The copyright holder is usually the creator. If the creator was paid to make this image, then their employer may be the copyright holder. If several people collaborated, then there may be more than one copyright holder. If you created this image, then you are the copyright holder.

Because of the large number of images on Wikipedia, we've sorted them using image copyright tags. Just find the right tag corresponding to the copyright status of this image, and paste it onto the image description page like this: {{TAGHERE}}.

There are 3 basic ways to licence an image on Wikipedia:

  • The copyright holder can also release their work into the public domain. See here for examples.
  • Images from certain sources are automatically released into the public domain. This is true for the United States, where the Wikimedia servers are located. (See here for images from the government of the USA and here for other governments.) However, not all governments release their work into the public domain. One exception is the UK (see here for images from the UK government). Non-free licence governments are listed here.
  • Also, in some cases, an image is copyrighted but allowed on Wikipedia because of fair use. To see a) if this image qualifies, and b) if so, how to tag it, see Wikipedia:Fair use.

For more information, see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. Please remember that untagged images are likely to be deleted.

If you have uploaded other images without including copyright tags, please go back and tag them. Also, please tag all images that you upload in the future.

If you have any questions, just leave a message on my talk page. Thanks again. --WonYong 10:05, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as {{db-unksource}}.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Hawaiialoha bygeraldfarinas.ogg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
