More Surrealism

Could you review the talk page? I am RFCing both Boyer and 24. because there is simply no way to work on this article with both of them treating it as a personal web page, and their constant attacks and rants. In addition, Boyer is making edits to other articles based on his intent to promote his own work, including attacks on known scholars etc.My own POV is that both should be banned permanently, as their contributions, such as they are, are far outweighed by the problems the create. Arthur Miller

There's a WORLD of difference between the Miller article and a stub. Even assuming that your "rationale" that because we don't allow stubs we shouldn't allow "sloppy" articles was legitimate (which, I don't believe it is), you have not explained WHY the Miller article is sloppy. Hi there,

Is there some sort of guideline which people should be included in Wikipedia, but not on the day pages?

• From what I understand, in the case of a river, rise as a noun means place of origin, while rise as a verb means to increase in size, volume, or level. But I may be wrong. Republics

Need your help and/or advice. The British Wikipedian Republican Party sought fit to delete Wikinfo:Classical definition of republic from Wikipedia. There is a terrible brouhaha at Talk:Republic. They won't even allow an external link! SimonP really doesn't know what he is doing. They deleted the Classical definition of republic and created mixed government and politeia instead. The official title of mixed government is a Republic and the Romans translated "politiea" as Republic. And then to top it off the new article Classical republicanism doesn't refer to the Classical republics of Crete, Sparta, Solonic Athens, or Rome but to Machiavelli's ideology. How can that be when Venice in the 13th century instituted a mixed government and called herself a "Republic".

With Jwrosenwieg and Kim Bruning there was a tacit agreement a year ago to have republic be the modern meaning and a [Classical definition of republic] to describe the ancient republics of Hellas and Rome and their influence. To say the least the "Republic section" is all messed up. We need some clarification. I have new information but User:Snowspinner won't let me bring this back up for undelete. (I do grant that a little bit of the Classical definition is original but the rest is not.) I will not let Sparta be called anything but a republic! I will not let the British wikipedian modern republicans strip Sparta, (my heritage and roots) of her rightful name. She is a Classical republic and needs to be called such! RickK, one of the admins, blocked my former accounts "User:Hil Duff" and "User:Hil Duff star". He didn't give any reason why and totally ignored my comments on my talk page just because he thinks my user name would be something like imposting or vandalizing. I wanted to discuss things over with him, but he just deleted my account immediately without reason. I just want to be a happy Wikipedian here.

I AM NOT A VANDAL, and I won't be Hilary Duff, just Cool Cat886. I won't tell anybody that I am famous or a pop star. On John F. Kennedy, you removed mention that he was "the last Democratic President elected from the North", stating in the edit summary "nixon was born in california - reagan was born in illinois, ghw was born in massachusetts; gw bush was born in connecticut". That seems unrelated, somehow. Nixon, Reagan, and both Bushes were Republicans, not Democrats. And California is not the North. Other Words for Vomiting

I noticed that you deleted the section in the vomiting article called "Other Words for Vomiting." Why? I'd like a good reason, and don't say "Wikipedia is not a thesaurus." That's not a reason. There are articles all over the site like that. You can write to me at User talk:Wolfj. (I'm not logged in right now.

The lengthy list of synonyms i removed was based on Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, which states that Wikipedia is "not an indiscriminate collection of items of information." Wikipedia is not a thesaurus, but Wiktionary is. Consider making your thesaurus entries onto Wiktionary, and then providing a link to it on the Vomiting article. Kingturtle 20:34, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I left a more elaborate response over at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Sunset High School (Portland) for you to read, but to illustrate what I mean, visit any of these dozen articles: Machop, Machop, Machoke, Machamp, Bellsprout, Tentacool, Tentacruel, Geodude, Graveler, Ponyta, Rapidash, Slowpoke, or Slowbro. There are dozens more just like those. My position is not that these should be deleted (they shouldn't), but that school articles are easily verifiable, expandable, useful and yes, totally encyclopedic. That last word, "encyclopedic", seems to be a huge matter of contention amongst deletionists— it's really too bad they can't find something more productive to focus their time and energy on. From the looks of it, one side believes that are encyclopedic, period, and another thinks that only a fraction of one percent are. Reverted my RV?"

On Joseph McCarthy you undid my RV and returned the article to the vandalized state. The vandal not only added obscenity during his edits but also cut and pasted large parts of the article into individual sections. When my edit history showed me removing what looked like legitimate parts of the article, it's because I was undoing what the vandal did.

Please be more careful in the future and make sure that not only you are removing an act of vandalism (which you didn't), and that the version of the article that you are reverting to is not itself vandalized (which it was). 128.61.70.49 22:08, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm afraid I'd have to oppose Curps' nomination for bureaucratship. I was rather surprised by his use of admin powers in The Matrix, particularly unprotecting a protected article on an extremely dubious pretext, and his subsequent failure to concede error. Kingturtle, I could probably be capable of carrying out the janitorial work of flipping the admin-flag-on switch once in a while, which bureaucratship seems to consist of in large part. But I'm not convinced that there is a shortage of bureaucrats, from the log it seems that this needs to be done only half a dozen times per week and most sysop promotions are handled by a single bureaucrat. Nats

Thanks for being the champion on this issue. The Expos and Nationals are the same franchise, had the Expos moved ten years ago, this debate would not be occuring. Wikipedia needs to be constitent and not have an exception when one is not warrented. However it seems that an interest group who perhaps are thinking with their hearts are probably going to win the day on this arguement, but I believe you are 100% correct on the issue.Smith03 15:52, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • It happened for a reason, but that doesn't mean it happened for a good reason. Information wise, merging the Expos/Nationals articles is problematic. For example, that pretty infobox with the Expos stats would seem out of place on the Nationals page. In any case, rigid conformity is not something to be desired; flexibility is fundamental, and pluralism is important. Another reason not to merge is simply the will of the fans (yes, that is a significant reason).... My RFA

Thank you for your comments on my RFA. Although the voting period just ended with a 14-8-2 vote, I will admit once and for all that I used it more as an evaluation of myself. Being promoted would have been a plus. I was more interested in who voted, when they voted, who would change their votes and when, and the comments I would receive. Hopefully I will correct the main weakness that was raised by those who voted oppose -- that I was too eager to put articles on VFD. Also, I will try to interact more with those Wikipedians who did not vote at all.

As for next month, I don't know if I will nominate myself again. I might not think about it until somebody else puts me up there on RFA at a later date. Eventually, I see myself as an admin, especially as the number of articles and users continues to grow. Thanks again and good luck at improving this vast archive of free knowledge. I do usually annotate minor edits but some things are just so trivial it doesn't seem worth the effort. I couldn't find any reference to your quoted policy of never using the minor edit flag for day articles. Lots of people don't seem to know this either? --Rjstott 09:59, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

• Wikipedia:Minor edit says that minor edit markers are for spelling corrections, formatting, and minor rearranging of text. it goes on to say "any real change, even if it is a single word, is a major edit." It isn't trivial to add a name to a list of deaths. It is helpful to other users if such an edit is not marked minor, and if the edit summary says something like "added Hippolyte Fizeau to list of deaths." Kingturtle 10:37, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I'm just asking for a bit of clarification on "peer groups". Do you mean working on various cooperative projects, or participating in various community portal tasks? I actually don't visit the portal very often; the sheer number of sections and links are daunting (IMO the page needs a bit of reorganization). I do think I need to collaborate with others more, maybe help out with peer reviews and such. I tend to come up with big goals, and due to my independent nature, I don't ask for help, and can't always finish the projects I start.

Every time I look for you to tell you something in IRC, you're never on :p Anyway, that George Bush vandal hops around on 128.122.128.0/24 and 128.122.129.0/24, so what I've been doing is blocking both for an hour the first time the vandalism pops up. • Disambiguation language should be as succinct as possible. (Australian jurist) is too much information....unless there was a (Canadian jurist) by the same name. We teach our students to always check for the sources, especially with content from the www, and that means people and how these names are fitted for the task. If there is testimony from third, independent sources, the better. That was the reason the oceanographers set up independent info about their teacher, and gave all the sources, as a future ancor for refs. Space is not a problem on wikipedia and people load only what they want to know, other than on a paper version. I am willing, as retired professor, to give course scripts to the Wikiversity idea of Eric Moeller (user:eloquence) for future online e-teaching and e-research, and for that it would be necessary to have a credential page for every teacher, like the one oceanographers produced. The more real names wikipedia has the better will be the reputation. And I am shure there will come a time when not the clitoris page is hit no 1 of future wikipedia. keep up with your fine work, I admire your input, with or without name, people like you are the soul of wikipedia

It's nice to be welcomed - but it was useful, too. I didn't realize that user pages existed, I had just been jumping in on articles where I saw something to fix or contribute. I must be doing something right - I just had one of my articles (which I originally wrote) posted to the copyright problems list. Led to a bunch of hurt feelings and fury that turned into a rewrite of the article in question. Now it is more appropriate for an encyclopedia. Knowing that I'd been welcomed made it easier to deal with being pronounced a copyright violator by somebody who seems to make a hobby of deleting articles. Thanks!

Please Help me Resolve Copyright Problem

I had a user flag a page I wrote Dive into Python as a copyright violation. From the template that comes up it's not exactly clear what the procedure is. I have:

1. Added a note on the talk page certifying that I am the original author of the material and that I release it under the G??? license used here.
2. Rewrote the article (I realized it was more informal & less encyclopedic) in the temp page Dive into Python/Temp
3. Waited.

Now what? Does somebody have a responsibility for going through the copyright problems list and resolving / deleting pages? What's the process? Is there more that I'm supposed to do?

The idea of the project I'm building was initially to create a historical resource of events and date (that is, when the project started in the pre-wikipedia days of 1995-1996). However, over time it evolved into becoming more of a meta resource of specific events. What do I mean by a specific event: first, it has to be verifiable (agreement on dates and existence of the event by most people... this I accomplish by Googling the date or event name and finding what other people say). Secondly, it has to have survived the passage of time (I set that at a decade: if it's still considered important after a decade it goes in... there is one exception to this rule as I believe most people will remember it after a decade: 9/11/2001). In terms of people's birthdays, I've initially gone by names that were included in some dictionaries I had (I think I started with the dictionary of american culturacy).

As I said in the previous paragraph, the idea pre-dates wikipedia. What I found is some of the data in wikipedia actually came from my own DB (even down to the wording) but some of the content I had in my own DB did not make it into Wikipedia. I was left with two choices then:

• 1. look in wikipedia and remove the content that was infringing or
• 2. find a way to merge my stuff more fully into wikipedia (hence I would only maintain a subset of wikipedia's content). I started merging some of the content but realized that it would take me forever.

So I figured it was better to go with option 3, link wikipedia to my DB and let other people take care of that merging. That's what I was starting to do yesterday but someone mentionned on my message page that this was no good. I had done cross-linking through June 30th before I read the message but upon reading it decided to stop and wait until some other wikipedian would ask me to continue to do so (or go ahead and link themselves). I totally agree with your comment there, despite my sympathy with the initative that underlies this list (namely presenting ADHD as a good thing rather than a handicap). This list is just way too speculative for a serious encyclopedia. Would it be appropriate for me to intiate VfD, or would that be seen by the community as heavy-handed? Did I engage in vandalism? Or merely a controversial edit - the entirety of the material was retained on the talk page, and my reasons for moving it were explained. Warning! Precedent for Speedy Deletion of School Stub and School Substubs!

The article here seems to be going up for SPEEDY deletion simply because it is a school! Deletionists cannot win in the VfD so this maybe a tactic to create a precedent for the speedy deletion of schools stub or school sub stubs! Copyright Violations

It's nice to know you; I received your Welcome Message in June 3th. I found a "copyright violation" long time ago, that is, a German tennis player Tommy Haas. The First Edition includes copyright violation from ATP Official site, but someone added {{cleanup}}, not {{copyvio|url=http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/playerprofiles/Highlights/default.asp?playernumber=H355}}. I noticed it in January 2005, but I wasn't accustomed to Wikipedia Project then. I didn't know what {{cleanup}} meant. After 9 revision histories, This Edition removed copied sentences. I got into a little tiff with Tobias Conradi over finally renaming the provinces of Afghanistan back to the "X province" format, from the "X Province" format he put them in some time ago. I have a question for you, since you seem to know something of Afghanistan: Can you state that "X province" is more accurate than "X Province?" (I noticed, on User talk:Jeltz, that every one of the google results you gave were to news sites, which may not know the standard. Or maybe they do! I don't know.) And, secondly, is there any reason not to use simply "X"? That is, if we put the articles at Paktia, Panjshir, Kandahar (province), etc? I know you're on vacation, so I wait for your reply. coolcat, my specific request in IRC was for someone to change the "Totals" row from 4 columns to 5 columns. this was something i wasn't able to figure out within the confines of the chart that existed. i did not ask for a total overhaul of the chart.

the States and their totals should appear in the first columns, and then subsets should appear in further columns. i am sorry for the amount of time you spent redoing the chart. can i reimburse you by doing a wikipedia task for you? :)

I was the one who added the "Missing" column. I decided to remove the "Missing" column because I felt the States and the States Totals columns should be separated from one to two - and if I didn't remove the "Missing" column, the chart would get too wide.

Image deletion rampage

Just a heads-up, but it seems that Jimbo Wales has decided to tighten up image tagging requirements, and has ordered immediate expunging of unsourced images. Some admins have thrown themselves into this hastily (User:Zscout370 for example), who aren't bothering to notify the uploaders or even remove the links. I bring this to your attention because Image:Benzodiazepine.jpg -- still in Benzodiazepine -- was deleted a few days ago. Fair use outside of article space

Hi. I see that your user page includes one or more "fair use" images (e.g. Image:Marine-raiders.jpg). You may not be aware that the fair use exception requires a separate justification for each use of an image, and it difficult to make a fair use argument outside of the main article namespace. Just to clarify, I was thinking of writing a script that would produce a list (e.g. sorted by page) for more convenient human action. Such a list would have answered your question. I am not proposing to script any removal of images or image links. I have been experimenting recently with finding violations of this type manually and then contacting users, with mixed results. By the way, I think (IANAL) that a link to an image ([:Image:…]), as opposed to an inline image, would not violate copyright. Have a look at what I've done with my (modest)upload gallery. (Hmm. Years in baseball

Can you have a look at Category:Baseball, and try and figure out why 9 (and only 9) of the "year in baseball" articles are showing up there? There's no real reason for them to be in the main category as well as the sub-cats. I can't for the life of me figure out what's causing it. 1966 in baseball shows up there, for example, but 1996 in baseball doesn't, and I can't find any difference in the formatting of the pages. I did not revert away. I re-added "United States Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi's panel found that more recent studies suggest the veterans' illnesses are neurological and apparently are linked to exposure to neurotoxins such as the nerve gas sarin, the anti-nerve gas drug pyridostigmine bromide, and pesticides that affect the nervous system. Research studies conducted since the war have consistently indicated that psychiatric illness, combat experience or other deployment-related stressors do not explain Gulf War veterans illnesses in the large majority of ill veterans," the review committee said."

Okay, well, I think the link to the 2005 Nebraska research should be added back, because as far as I know it was the first peer-reviewed medical publication proving that uranium is a neurotoxin. That means that uranium inhalation exposure can explain the observed birth defects, immune system problems, AND the behavioral problems, whereas from 2002-2004 it could only explain the first two. Afganistan

I noticed you have made a lot of contributions to the Afgan articles. I am curently working on some texts over at Wikisource in particular some of Kipling's poetry with references to Afganistan under the Birtish Empire. For example I would like to link to Michni and Mooltan which I believe are places in Afganistan or the Northwest Province. Perhaps they are too small of towns to merit an article but maybe they are no longer called by the same names the Britsh used.
