Ecuador[edit]

The usual Wiki shoddy writing and editing. Does Ecuador supply 70% or 90% of global commercial balsa? GMS! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.151.17.68 (talk) 19:08, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical wood?[edit]

I believe balsa is a tropical wood, containing a large amount of water, which evaporates when dried leaving the Styrofoam-like wood. If it's tropical, then it probably can't be deciduous. Also, 90 feet (27 metres) in just 7 years doesn't sound right at all! -radiojon 12:43, 2003 Sep 14 (UTC)

Checked up - it is usually evergreen but can be dry-season deciduous in drier areas. It is fast growing, that growth rate is unlikely but not impossible. MPF 11:01, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Can you include a link to a website with balsa pictures ??. Thanks in advance.

the first external link is broken.

There is no reference to Balsa in the Aeroplane page. I plan to change that link to model airplane, if there is no objection. Wake 21:00, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Model airplanes?[edit]

Really, the section on model airplane doesn't belong here, it should be moved over to "model airplanes".

This page should be about the balsa tree and possible use of the wood.

I suggest deleting the entire "model airplane" section and just mention that balsa is used in model constructions, including model airplanes and leave it at that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.16.28.198 (talk) 16:02, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uses[edit]

Is balsa wood used in making props for stage and/or film, especially the ones that get broken or is that some other material? 78.149.31.65 (talk) 11:28, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Answering my own question .. Yes, it is used for breakaway objects (stunt props). 78.149.31.65 (talk) 11:47, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In my experience various forms of styrofoam (like foam core) are most popular and cheaper than balsa. But for a breakaway chair I suppose balsa would be better. Babahu (talk) 08:55, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

External links modified[edit]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Ochroma pyramidale. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Redirects and other languages[edit]

This page gets redirected from "balsa tree" and "Ochroma pyramidale". If you use the redirection "Ochroma pyramidale" ([1]https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ochroma_pyramidale&redirect=no) you see that this entry is available in more than 40 languages. But the article "Ochroma" shows only 6 different languages. I tried to add for example the german link to "Balsabaum" but there was an error since it is already linked to "Ochroma pyramidale". Maybe someone with more experience can add the missing languages to the "Ochroma" article. 2001:9E8:B04:1200:38DD:BFA7:F6A:E841 (talk) 20:54, 19 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Word salad?[edit]

What on earth is this paragraph supposed to mean? I'd rewrite it if I but understood it:

"Balsa leaf tending to gold amalgamation. Supported with Manihot esculenta Crantz (bitter cassava) the gravity concentration of gold, attracting even small gold particles, seems to be a viable methode to substitute mercury in gold extraction." 84.238.26.95 (talk) 14:39, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted. It seems to have been a mistranslated word salad—see below.--AntientNestor (talk) 22:46, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gold extraction[edit]

I have deleted this use for the leaves of the plant because it appears to be a mistranslation, although it was supported by a reference. Balsa in this case is Spanish for "raft"; small river rafts are used to support the equipment used in the process.[1]
