Picture[edit]

Does anybody know if the picture from univie.ac.at can be used for wikipedia?

Or is there any other (possibly brighter) picture, that could be added to this site.

There is a good picture on the German Wikipedia, which you could just upload to commons:. / up+land 17:19, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

"Full university" status[edit]

Is it entirely fair to describe it as "not a full university" has it has separated its medical section? Full university status in the UK does not require a medical school (although most of those that top rankings have one). Is this an Austrian convention? Wee Jimmy 00:41, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The word “Universität” is often persceived as a description of the university of covering all sciences and arts (Wissenschaften). In old days, the University of Vienna was the only University in Vienna, other schools of higher education just being focussed on specific fields. Later other schools were named “Universität”, too, leading to confusion. “Technische Universität” was perceived as an oxymoron because a school can either be restricted to a field or universal, but not both. This might be a misunderstanding of the etymology of the word “Universität”. I have never heard of an official definition though.

Still, it is very complicated to say, for example, that you work at the University of Vienna, when someone asks which university you work at. You can just say something like THE univiersity, because the name “Universität Wien” does not contain any word to contrast it from the other “universities” in Vienna. – Hokanomono 10:05, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Contradiction[edit]

Was the University founded in 1385 or 1365? Greenshed 11:48, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In 1365, Rudolf IV sanctioned a deed of foundation for studies to doctoral level in Vienna on the model of the University of Paris. However, Pope Urban V did not ratify the deed to also found a Faculty of Theology, presumably due to pressure exerted by the Emperor who wished to avoid competition to Prague University. In 1384, papal agreement was finally received and Vienna University was extended to a full university, also including the fourth faculty, Theology. The first university building opened in 1385. versity of Pisa was founded in 1343, and that of Vienna in 1365. Why is it mentioned that the University of Vienna is the oldest in central europe?

The University of Vienna is the second oldest in Central Europe, behind Charles University in Prague, and this does not concern the University of Pisa because the University of Pisa is not located in Central Europe by any definition of the term. Elpato 21:49, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is this the university, late 19th - early 20th C?[edit]

A gravestone, probably in Vienna's Zentralfriedhof, describes the deceased as "PROFESSOR AN DER WIENER UNIVERSITAT 1880 - 1912" – would this refer to the University of Vienna or need I seek further confirmation? -- Thanks, Deborahjay 12:04, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Most probably yes. As far as I know the University of Vienna was at that time the only institution named "Universität" in Vienna, the other today's unversities were called "Hochschule" or other names or had not existed yet. Vheissu 16:17, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is done, except I can't make the last paragraph of 'Library History' work properly.

Nazi time[edit]

No word about the years 1938-1945. Xx236 (talk) 13:43, 14 December 2007 (UTC) A section could be added that Moritz Schlick was murdered in the univeristy (at the "Philosophen Stiege"). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.115.174.219 (talk) 20:12, 12 June 2009 (UTC) 'in 1938 the University of Vienna was reformed under political aspects and a huge number of teachers and students were dismissed for political and "racial" reasons' - rather an undersatatement.Xx236 (talk) 07:33, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Identification of people in 1853 picture[edit]

I have left a request here: en:Category talk:University of Vienna faculty#Can anybody identify these people ? but I'm not sure if that page is attended by actual persons or if it is autogenerated. Nevertheless, help is much appreciated. Power.corrupts (talk) 09:17, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Viennese faculty of professors in 1853.

I have managed to identify the following persons in this 1853 image
9 - Ferdinand Ritter von Hebra
13 - Carl Freiherr von Rokitansky
14 - Josef Škoda

Johann Klein (1788-1856) was professor of obstetrics at the time and is likely in the picture

I somebody could help on this it would be much appreciated. Thanks, Power.corrupts 17:39, 26. Dez. 2008 (CET)

Sitting, from the left to the right: Dumreicher, Skoda, Rokitansky, Rosas, Schuh. Standing, from the left to the right: Dlauhy, Hebra, Helm, Oppoltzer, Brücke, Haller, Unger, Redtenbacher, Sigmund, Hyrtl. --84.113.222.201 11:29, 14. Jan. 2009 (CET), Vienna

Thanks!! But I think you start right (rechts) and go left (links), not the other way round, otherwise my own idenfitication (see numbers) would be wrong, and I would doubt that. Could you please confirm. I will copy the info into the image's Commons page, for reference. Would you by any chance happen to know also the first name, could be useful for future articles. I had hoped that Klein was in the picture, too bad. Thanks again, Regards, Power.corrupts (talk) 17:37, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh well I discovered the names somewhere on the internet, but they were referring to an image which was mirrored. sorry for my inobservance. Moreover I found an image file including the names: [1]. Concerning the first names I did some research- Sitting: Franz Schuh, Anton Rosas, Carl Rokitansjy, Josef Sokda, Johann Dumreicher. Standing: Joseph Hyrtl, Karl Sigmund, Josef Redtenbacher, Franz Unger, Haller (no idea, definively not 'Albrecht Haller' because this one lived from 1708 to 1777), Ernst Brücke, Theodor Oppoltzer, Helm (no idea), Ferdinand Hebra, Anton Dlauhy --84.113.222.201 (talk) 01:37, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

de:Josef Redtenbacher was professor at University of Vienna whereas his brother Ludwig Redtenbacher was professor at University of Prague (in 1860 Ludwig became head of government of the Museum of Natural History of Vienna but not professor at the university). For Karl Ludwig Sigmund I found this source ([2]): "Neumann (...) served as a resident with Hebra (...) within the Vienna academic community until he succeeded Karl Ludwig Sigmund (1810-1883) in the chair of dermatology and syphilis where he remained until his death". In addition I found Theodor Helm ([3]), he was professor at University of Pavia, later doctor at Vienna General Hospital and from 1855 to 1869 director of Vienna General Hospital. The first name of Haller is Carl, see [4]: "(...) begann er mit Freunden und Kollegen – zunächst Franz Schuh (1804–1865) und Carl Haller, später kamen Joseph Redtenbacher (...)". And yes you are right, it is Johann Oppolzer and not his father Theodor. Above all it is not "Anton" Dlauhy, but Johann Dlauhy ([5]): "(...) war der Grundstein zum Wiener Institut für Gerichtliche Medizin gelegt. (...) Bernt blieb bis 1842 im Amt, seine Nachfolger waren Jakob Kolletschka (1843-1847) und Johann Dlauhy, der 1875 in den Ruhestand trat." Phew! --84.113.222.201 (talk) 14:16, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently, there is both an Anton Dlauhy (1807–1888, see e.g. s:de:ADB:Dlauhy, Anton and a Johann Dlauhy (1808–1888). What makes you think we have Johann and not Anton here? --UV (talk) 23:13, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, it could be Anton too. But how about Benekeautobio.pdf Page 260, just found that --84.113.222.201 (talk) 05:20, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know, if anyone will read this, but I have to correct some informations: The picture shows some of the most important professors of the Viennese medical school 1853. The name of the picture given with "Vienna faculty" is just not correct.

The displayed persons are:
from left to right, sitting:
Schuh, Franz (17.10.1804-22.12.1865; Chirurgie)
Rosas, Anton von (23.12.1791-31.05.1855; Augenheilkunde)
Rokitansky, Carl Frh. v. (19.02.1804-23.07.1878; Pathologische Anatomie)
Skoda, Josef (10.12.1805-13.06.1881; Innere Medizin)
Dumreicher von Österreicher, Johann Heinrich v.
(15.01.1815-16.11.1880; Chirurgie)

from left to right standing:
Hyrtl, Josef (07.12.1810-17.07.1894; Anatomie)
Sigmund v. Ilanor, Karl Ludwig (28.08.1810-01.02.1883; Dermatologie, Syphilidologie)
Redtenbacher, Josef (12.03.1810-05.03.1870; Chemie, Medizin)
Unger, Franz (30.11.1800-13.02.1870; Botanik, Pflanzenphysiologie)
Haller, Carl (02.11.1809-03.09.1887; Chirurgie)
Brücke, Ernst Wilhelm von (06.06.1819-07.01.1892; Physiologie, Anatomie)
Oppolzer, Johann Ritt. v. (04.08.1808-16.04.1871, Pathologie)
Helm, Theodor (12.05.1810-20.03.1875; Chirurgie)
Hebra, Ferdinand v. (07.09.1816-05.08.1880; Dermatologie)
Dlauhy, Johann Nepomuk H. (26.03.1808-29.07.1888; Patholog.Anatomie,Gerichtsmedizin,Staatsarzneikunde)

History Section[edit]

For a university this old, it's surprising that the history section is so short. The history of the library is almost as long as the history of the whole university! If anyone can expand that section or link to references that include more historical information (in any language), that would be highly beneficial. -Mabeenot (talk) 03:46, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Motto[edit]

The university has since 2012 or 2013 published some ads using the slogan „Neu. Seit 1365“ (see „Neu seit 1365“: Leistungsbericht und Wissensbilanz der Universität Wien 2012), but are there any sources that say this is the motto of the school? I don’t think so. This year, they use another slogan: „Wir stellen die Fragen“ (see Theresa Dirtl: Henne oder Ei?). The seal of the university says “s. sapientiae studii viennensis”. If the school has a motto at all, it might be that. --Babel fish (talk) 08:13, 8 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
