New template: Further ill

Further information (in French and other languages): Tonsured women

New template {{Further ill}} is now available for use. This is a mashup of {{Further}} and {{ill}}, and allows you to provide a red "Further" link to an article which doesn't (yet) exist in en-wiki, but does in a different language:

• Further information (in French): Ocean swell fairies
• Further information (in Catalan and other languages): Margarita Cueto

Normal usage is at the top of a section, as with {{Further}}, when you want to highlight a missing article in English that would be a good source of further information for that section if it existed, while at the same time linking to existing articles on foreign Wikipedias, which could also be a good starting point for creating the English article.

More robust version of Needtrans

For a long time, a minority of entries contained an ISO lang code ('es', 'zh', etc.) where the language name is supposed to be, such as at Carolina la O, or Victor Balashov. This is because a user coded {{needtrans|pg=My article name|language=es}} instead of coding {{needtrans|pg=My article name|language=Spanish}}, as it's supposed to be. I've updated the template to attempt to translate the ISO code into the language name in these cases, so this should work either way. This has been tested in the sandbox and testcases page, and is now live. Please be alert for any anomalies, and ping me from Template talk:Needtrans if you see any problems related to this. Announcing simple, new interlanguage link template 'ill fr'

There's a new, simplified interlanguage template {{ill fr}} that you can now use for linking to one French article. The new template takes one param, the article name. Examples:

• {{ill fr|Brigade Charles Martel}} ⟶ Brigade Charles Martel
• {{ill fr|Raymond Chomel}} ⟶ Raymond Chomel

It's designed for only those cases where the English article name has the exact same title as the French one, so, it's useful for people's names, other names, or untranslated organization names. No fancy options, but very simple to use.

I'm finding it very handy, because it's less typing, and nothing to remember. You can view a bunch of examples at Saint-Nazaire pocket. So far, this is the only language to have the "simplified" ill template. If French is not your main language to inter-link to and you'd like to have a similar one for another language, just ask. If there's a lot of interest, I'll automate it so the new doc page can be generated automatically. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 10:22, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

It was a very easy conversion, so I added three more (es, de, pt) for the languages that have the most items in the cleanup categories, namely: Spanish (92 articles needing cleanup), Portuguese (51), and German (48). Restore the removed entry for OLAP cube

I had added an entry on April 28 for images from OLAP cube and it got a couple of comments as well, but the entry was removed with comment "not in our scope". Please put back the entry so we get to know what the text in the images say. I can make the image changes and upload the English version to Commons. Jay (talk) 06:47, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

I wrote at least one of the comments. As best I can tell the graphic is an example. The important thing is the relationship between the levels. Auto-removing empty dates

The process that comes through every day and sticks the current date header at the bottom of "needs translation" section: Could a step be added that replaces all instances of

Adding articles

Considering how many articles need to be added to this page, the instructions are not easy to follow and the whole process is crying out for automation. New articles not in English could be auto detected and added to the page by a bot. Fiddling around with templates is like a blast from the nineties. Mccapra (talk) 20:08, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

@Mathglot: hi I find pages to add here through new page patrol. There may be a reason I haven’t thought of why tagging the article for translation needs to be separate from listing it on this page, but ideally when you add the tag to the article, listing here would be automatic. At the moment you have to first fetch one template to tag the article, and then fetch a second template and find the position on this page where you need to add it halfway down a lot of dense instructions. @Mccapra:, thanks for the reply. On my over-long list of things to do, is upgrading the article template to do something to make it easier to do what you want. It wouldn't automatically list it here, but it would provide a link in expanded instructions that when you clicked it, would open an edit window at the bottom of the page, and prepopulate it with some parametrized, canned text which would do most of what you wanted. That would leave you in preview mode on the WP:PNT page, where you could scan what it was proposing, fix it up as needed, or just hit Publish if it was accurate. Adding a template *to the bottom of* the WP:PNTCU section

You know how the {{Rough translation}} template at an article, has the below-the-fold statement about:

If you have just labeled this article as needing attention, please add

to the bottom of the WP:PNTCU section on Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English.

Well, I've made a change so that the "WP:PNTCU" link now goes to (near) the bottom of the page, instead of making you scroll. The way that this works, is that it actually goes to the dated subheader, so in the case of the article Jean Mattéoli, it goes to WP:PNT#July 2021, and then you just have to scroll down a little bit to find the right section for Mattéoli. If nobody has created the dated section header, then it just goes to the top of that section, and you still have to scroll all the way down like you used to. (Or hit Ctrl+End or Cmd+⬇, if you use keystroke shortcuts.) Lmk if you like it, or have suggestions for improvements. The example above is live, and you can click it. Proposal to undo merger of Duflu and Needtrans

Last October, it was decided to merge templates {{Duflu}} (pre-merge version) and {{Needtrans}}. I haven't been following this closely, but afaict an incomplete merge has caused problems with the wording of the merged template in certain cases. Would appreciate if those involved can comment here on the current status of this. Is this still a problem for you, and how serious a problem is it? Would the project be better served by either:

• undoing the merger of templates Duflu and Needtrans, or
• leaving the merged template alone, and recreating Duflu with its old functionality (or even new functionality)?

Adding @Largoplazo, Lectonar, Jac16888, HyperGaruda, Ymblanter, and Elinruby:. Also, and slightly O/T: there have been understandable complaints in the past about the cryptic name "Duflu" (apparently for dual fluency) so if you support an undo or a different solution involving two templates, feel free to also suggest a new name for it. I rather dropped the ball after I contacted the editor who'd done all the work (both here and in the code repository) to change it to its current state and received the reply that he'd stepped down from such duties. I had left a comment in Git as well, and someone finally responded to me there but at that point my help in integrating the reversion there with reversion of the changes here was requested, and I didn't follow up, unsure of how to proceed correctly. Thanks for your comments. I had seen the Github link, but I certainly didn't interpret that as you dropping the ball, so I don't think this is on you in any way. That said, if you know how to continue on that path and want to, then I'd certainly hold off on any merger plans. But we're all volunteers here, so I don't think there's any way that this is some kind of chore or task or whatever that you have to do. If someone else stepped away, and it's half done, then the rest of us should figure out what's best for the project—try to complete it and move forward, back it out to where it was, or just leave it the way it is if that's a good-enough solution. I have no particular opinion what would be best, other than everyone seemed to be okay with how it was before (except for the name, maybe) and there seem to be some issues now; I'm just not sure how serious they are. Update: I just felt inspired to return to look at this in the code repository. There's a difference between now and two years ago: I've learned my way around GitHub. I found the solution, and I've implemented it and pushed a proposed change to the repo, but it isn't showing up there. Some technical reason, I suppose. I left commentary there as well, at the bottom of the old thread, including a request for help.

Once that change goes live, on this end {{needtrans}} will need to be restored to the correct text, and {{duflu}} will have to be restored to its own templatehood instead of serving as a redirect to {{needtrans}} as it does now. Largoplazo (talk) 20:42, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

It's not releasable because it's tailored to my own needs, so it's still in my sandbox user space, and there's no doc page, and but maybe others might find it useful. The rows are the stuff I tend to want to look up, without making the table too long. It currently has six static columns for the languages I'm most interested in (en de fr es ru it) and seven additional language columns you can pull in with parameters (pt nl ca pl sv zh ja). The example above shows the basic six, + ca/nl/pt added via parameters. If there's interest, I could add simple doc, and maybe finish the parametrization to make all the columns fully dynamic. That template is inconsistent with the way non-English articles are handled, per the guidelines here at WP:PNT. We don't leave non-English articles around waiting for somebody to transwiki them. If someone does so before they're deleted, that's fine, but until then they're already in Category:Wikipedia articles needing translation, so people can find them that way. Requesting addition of information on how to request permission to translate

Hello, I have some decent experience under my belt editing and creating Wikipedia pages, but am still in the early stages of learning about the many protocols and processes for more advanced activities. I am at an experience level where I have been approved to create new Wikipedia pages but am still not approved to translate pages. However, I am able to translate from both Spanish and Mandarin Chinese into English, so I think I could be useful in this endeavor. I have attempted searching for information on Wikipedia processes for requesting permission to translate, but I have been unable to locate the information. I am therefore hoping that a more experienced Wikipedia editor might consider adding a section to this page on how to go about requesting that permission, if it is even possible to do so. If you can create articles, no special permission is required to be able to translate existing articles from other languages' Wikipedias. The conditions and procedures for doing so are described at Help:Translation. Largoplazo (talk) 22:17, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

But, please, check carefully that we do not have articles on the same subject already, which may not use the exact title you fancy! And remember that the referencing expectations are much higher here than on some other Wikipedias. I am seeing a number of translated articles that are unlikely to survive because they duplicate better articles we already have. Draft:Early Modern Art is an example. Replace deletion with draftification for untranslated pages

Given that we now have (and have had for a long time) a draft namespace, shouldn't we replace deletion with draftification as the outcome of a failure for an article to be translated into English? Lot of articles that are posted here are draftified anyway, within a day or two of their posting, and if such articles had been written to draft space to begin with, they'd sit there happily until, at the latest, WP:G13 comes into play once they're considered to have expired.

A more radical proposition would be to eliminate the two-week waiting period altogether and recognize draftification as the immediate action to take when a non-English article appears in article space. (This page would continue to serve its role when only portions of an article needs translation; after two weeks, the untranslated portions could be removed from the article.)

I mean for all of this to apply only to articles that aren't subject to deletion for some other reason—as is already the case, as an article being listed here has never precluded it from being deleted on some other grounds.

Such a change would require alterations to Twinkle and any other tool that automates the treatment of articles not in English, as well as to the author notification template(s).

Announcing template Wiktionarylang

New Template:Wiktionarylang may be used to add a small box flush right with a link to a term in a foreign language wiktionary. If you're familiar with {{Wikisourcelang}}, the new template uses the same four positional parameters, and adds one more to allow you to specify 'section' (as above), 'paragraph', and so on instead of 'article'. Differentiation between "needs translation" and "needs cleanup" messages restored

This is a belated (by one month) announcement that User:Novem Linguae and I have reversed the merger of the {{needtrans}} and {{duflu}} templates as necessary so that the message posted here for pages needing translation is once again "The language of this article is ..." rather than "The initial language of this article was ...". I addressed this problem earlier at the announcement of the merger at #Template:duflu merged to Template:needtrans, and again at #New template bug? and #Proposal to undo merger of Duflu and Needtrans. I plunged into it myself when I learned that the user who had merged the templates was unavailable.

@Mathglot, I'm noticing the section above, #More robust version of Needtrans. Did our update remove the functionality you'd added? Can you check whether it needs to be restored, merged into the current state of the {{needtrans}} template? Largoplazo (talk) 12:12, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

Largoplazo, thanks for the unmerge. Yes, it did, and it should probably be merged back in, as it resolved a problem we would see not infrequently at WP:PNT with messages such as, "the language of this article is kk" from people using the lang code (unsupported before my change) instead of lang name; the change accepted either one. I'll have to look at it at some point, but too busy now. If someone else wants to add it back before I get to it, feel free. In the meantime, subsequent to the rollback of this template, the doc page of needtrans needed updating, and I've done so. Mathglot (talk) 19:29, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

Fails test case 4d (e.g., |language=zz ) which I thought was working previously, but tested it using old rev. 1007176726 and it fails there, too, so looks like your code restoration was perfect, and there was an outstanding bug that hadn't been noticed before. Latest needtrans template links the original article, please report any issues

I've just released a new version of {{Needtrans}} (it's called 'Translation request' now, but I'm still used to the old name) and it automatically links the original language article if it can find it. No changes to params, no change to what users need to do; it either just works and links it if it finds it, and if not it looks as before. There is one issue: subst-ing the template produces some squirrely wikicode, because a downstream template is not subst-protected, and needs to be. For a short while until this is fixed, wikicode readers will see unprotected subst code like currently visible in the wikicode underlying § A Monster in Paris. This doesn't affect the rendered page section and links, which are correct, only the wikicode. (Pinging Nikkimaria who will run into this if attempting to edit that section: pls be patient.) Template:Duflu still listed as deprecated in this page's instructions

Hey @Largoplazo. The instructions for this page state {{Duflu}} – deprecated; now redirects to Needtrans.. I think this may need updating, since as you may recall we restored this template. –Novem Linguae (talk) 10:17, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

If I'm reading the Twinkle code right, all "Translated pages that could still use some cleanup" requests should use {{Duflu}}, and all "Pages for consideration" requests should use {{Needtrans}}. –Novem Linguae (talk) 10:33, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

I have noticed that sometimes a post still shows up on the "needs translations" section with a "the original language was" message, and all I've been able to think of to explain it is that some tool I don't know about is still confused. Upgrade to Duflu now links the foreign article automatically

A recent upgrade to {{Dual fluency}} similar to the one described above for {{Needtrans}} automates generation of the link to the foreign article. This means you no longer need to include the |orig= parameter, just the |pg= and |language= are sufficient. Consult the latest /doc for details, or just do what you were doing before, and it will still work. Mathglot (talk) 08:01, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
