exiled from the main page: "and one of the best players in the world in the 1990s. He was the talented playmaker of the"... Considered by whom to be one of the best? Are you referring to rankings? (are football players ranked?) Sportscasters? Who made that assessment? (Not Wikipedia, as Wikipedia wouldn't make those kinds of assessments in violation of NPOV.)  :-) --Koyaanis Qatsi

KQ -- I watched the last two world cups and last two Euro cups, and in, general, a lot of football. i think the sentence is fair, although it might be better to say, "generally recognized by the media as being one of the greatest..." Face it, players who aren't great don't command big transfer fees -- Hagi did in the 90's. He played for great teams. His national team was brilliant when he played. I can't remember if he was ever in the running for footballer of the year, but he may have been. Why is this a problem -- i certainly think that an entry on Maradona would be NPOV if it claimed that he was one of the all-time greats. It would be pushing it, however, to say that he's a dirty, cheating bastard besides, which is true, but could perhaps be expressed more neutrally. JHK

JHK, I'm sure you can accurately tell whether he is a great player, just as I can recognize who's a great director, but I don't think Wikipedia should be in the business of stating opinion as fact. I commonly work around it by saying, e.g. "Film critic such-and-such notes that" etc. It's a simple matter of attribution; I'm not disputing his talent. Koyaanis Qatsi

I find it hard to believe any football fan in the early nineties would argue that he was not one of the ten best players of the decade. At least the early part of the decade.

Best player of the 1990's?[edit]

I consider myself a football aficionado, but I don't recall (ever) FIFA giving Hagi the label of best player of the 90's? Can someone please provide a source.

Hagi is one of my favourite players of all time, but having looked around I can't find any evidence of such a title being bestowed upon him by FIFA, so have removed this part. --Xobxela 09:20, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i.e. He was in the all-star team of the USA '94 World Cup. At that time it was an official award of FIFA. They don't do it anymore, this best team thing. Rumburak level 3 wizard (talk) 20:58, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV[edit]

Trying to make this article more encyclopedic and less fansite-like, I've moved the following paragraph to here.

"Hagi was a genius player, something which can be said of only very few other players in the world such as Pelé, Maradona and Franz Beckenbauer. He had plenty of talent, which helped him to reach some performances like no other Eastern European player. His playing style revolutionized the football game - his speed and creativity made those famous counter-attacks possible. Only 5'8" tall and wearing size five boots, Hagi is one of the more diminutive players on the field, but in terms of his impact on the game, and the status of Romanian soccer, he is larger than life. By bringing so much respect to Romanian soccer, Hagi opened up opportunities for future players, as clubs from all over Europe come to scout talent in Romania."

The pov needs to be improved and the claim stated in the last sentence could use a source, imo. Igorrr 15:26, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removed " of Aromanian descent." at the end of the first sentence.. If we look at ALL other soccer players who are of one nationality and a specific descent, it doesn't say that in the first paragraph or the first sentence.. This can go under his personal life or background, the first paragraph is just an intro.

and was he really nicknamed the hunck with the chunck??? lol —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.12.155.116 (talk) 03:16, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Poorly written paragraph[edit]

"In 2000 was Hagi and Galatasaray's best year, with the Turkish side, lead by Hagi, managed to win the UEFA Cup after defeating Arsenal and then the European Super Cup Hagi's former club, Real Madrid. and win it, for the first time in Turkey's history."

Man, it's a real labor trying to read that paragraph. There is no reason to use that many comma's and the wording is really awkward. Someone split that thing into two separate sentences.

Please. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.11.18.98 (talk) 20:29, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

National team selections[edit]

2 or three ears ago, FRF erased from the offical statistics 33 matches, 31 of them being played at the Olympic competition, one match played with Hungary B (1980) the last matche played with Ecuador U23 in 1984. At the last one Hagi was fielded, so he lost 1 selection for the national team. Macedonians (Greeks Latins)[edit]

Hello. I tried to explain my changes but nobody read the explanations. We live in 2014 in a multi-cultural Europe. How is possible to accept in the english language the term "Aromanian"? Many scientists described this term as an EXONYM. More than this, is a miss-translate of the name of our first contemporary grammar book (Roman or Macedono-Vlah Grammar). In Greece, the Academy consider us Ancient Greeks latinised. In Greece!!! Hundreds of scientists. In these conditions what is the problem with the term Macedonians (Greeks Latins)? You asked us to talk before making changes. Let's talk. Is somebody ready to accept a dialogue? I apologise but if there are some macedo-bulgarians or romanians admins, they will never accept the truth. And how to accept it if their national history has a lot of mistakes? We have here a conflict between Greece (Macedonia), Romania and FYROM. But for us, the term Macedonians (Greeks Latins) has no historical errors. Please, those professionals who can explain this term is false, to come here and talk. (Makedonovlah (talk) 10:36, 8 June 2014 (UTC))[reply]

check please his total goals made, i've corrected his italian total goals but i didnt want to make a mess calculating the total of the goals he made in all the leagues where he played and the total goals he made in all club's competitions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.177.92.77 (talk) 12:09, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

The page gives the pronunciation of his name as [ˈɡe̯orɡe ˈhad͡ʒi], and that's just the way I always hear it. But I also learnt that the final -i is not pronounced in Standard Romanian. So why don't we say [ˈɡe̯orɡe had͡ʒ]? Steinbach (talk) 19:32, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I never heard this pronounciation at all. I used to watch A LOT of football in my youth which incidentally was in the 90's. Also, the final "i" is sometimes pronounced in Romanian. btw. Rumburak level 3 wizard (talk) 17:14, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Family names do not usually end in "i" but when they do, the "i" is heard most of the times. Usually the names end either in a consonant or in "a", "ă" or "e" which are the most common vowels.
For example, the Moldavian poet's name, "Leonida Lari", is pronunced with a stressed and sonorous final "i". The pianist's name "Dinu Lipatti" is in the same situation. Or the poet's name, "Tudor Arghezi". A different example, where the "i" is not stressed and not sonorous is the singer's name "Nicolae Covaci", but here the reason is that the "i" is a part of the phonem "ci" (č).
Another example where the final "i" is heard is in the vast majority of the given name diminutives like "Adi", "Toni", "Luci", et al.
The rule is that when the name has 2 syllabes, the final "i" is heard.
Like in "Hagi". Rumburak level 3 wizard (talk) 20:33, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in Gheorghe Hagi[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Gheorghe Hagi's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "FIFA":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 22:04, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
