Place in Pop Culture[edit]

Jhonen Vasquez regarding his age was part of the 90s and early 2000s scene. During the time that Invader Zim was being created, goth, punk, and underground techno trends involved elements that the Invader Zim universe sometimes reflected, through the background characters and show's pop culture trends. This is somewhat separate from the influence and associated trends of the fan base of the show.

The Matrix definitely is something to do with Dib's coat and the paranormal investigator Dib gets paired with on career day. Movies like the Matrix and themes of IZ reflect the early 2000s science fiction action themes emerging at this time.

Also if you look at the new comic book version that Jhonen has released on Invader Zim, the parody of pop culture continues into games we play on Steam, while still retaining originality in its execution. Invader Zim is truly created as a unique kids cartoon at the end of the day, with an adult satirical twist on working life and other mundane strife in adulthood.
