The description of a ballistic wire printer sounds very similar to the description of (and my experience with) what is called a dot matrix printer. The computer printer page suggests that the ballistic wire printer is a subclassification of the dot matrix printer. A link was added in/from ballistic wire printer, to dot matrix printer. Perhaps someone more knowlegable could better define the distinction between the two types.
