    April 15[edit]

    couldn’t → couldn't, ’s → 's’s → 's[edit]

Hello. In recently uploaded articles, I have noticed that apostrophes have been turned into... whatever this -> ' is called.

I have two queries: Are apostrophes not allowed? If not, what is the best way to put them in, instead of apostrophes? I write in Word and then copy and paste into the create box, so there are apostrophes all over the place.

(I use '' when I am doing italics and ''' when bold, it's just in the middle of words that's the issue)

    Thanks! BJCHK (talk) 00:03, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    @BJCHK: You're going to want to see MOS:CURLYQUOTE. Apostrophes are used; just not the curly variant. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:17, 15 April 2024 (UTC).[reply]
@Tenryuu thanks - I am trying to work out how to get the straight ones when I am typing in Word. The learning curve continues!BJCHK (talk) 02:29, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @BJCHK: This might be relevant to you, assuming you're using a more recent version of Word. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 04:39, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, BJCHK, according to the Manual of Style, contractions should be avoided, except in direct quotations. See MOS:CONTRACTIONS. Write "could not" instead. Cullen328 (talk) 01:21, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328 thank you for pointing that out. I had no idea about the contractions. I'm (haha) not sure I used too many contractions previously but will go back and check now! BJCHK (talk) 02:30, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Maybe I'm seeing this wrong?[edit]

Did Hitler's mustache really look like that? I thought it was a solid block? I'm wondering if there was vandalism? I'm not supporting the guy, but it just seems strange. Maybe I'm seeing things or I'm wrong and that's how it was supposed to look? 75.142.254.3 (talk) 07:16, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That does seem weird. In most pictures his moustache is a rectangle. Maproom (talk) 07:45, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did an image search, it really did look like that sometimes I guess because I don't think it could have been vandalized in all those pics. So I guess no need for further action. 75.142.254.3 (talk) 08:07, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Before WWI (I have read), Hitler wore a much wider ('handlebar') moustache, but trimmed it to the more familiar style in order to fit inside a gas mask.
A moustache wearer myself, I would remind people that moustaches do not retain a fixed shape and size by themselves, but instead grow and have to be regularly trimmed. They also grow in patterns that are not necessarily ideal for the shape the wearer may most desire. Doubtless over the years Hitler's moustache varied a little in exactly how it was trimmed. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 151.227.134.31 (talk) 19:26, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Madiba the Musical" there (as here) is a red link. Why should it be removed; and if it should be removed, what problem do you face in removing it? -- Hoary (talk) 11:34, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
IP editor. Maybe you thought the link should go to Matilda the Musical, as I did at first. However the citation confirms that there is a musical called "Matibla the Musical" and it is perfectly possible someone could decide to write a Wikipedia article about it at some point in the future. That's what WP:Red links are intended to encourage. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:56, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    hyper link[edit]

    How do I post a hyper link onto a page? Creativeedge1 (talk) 12:51, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi @Creativeedge1.
It depends what you mean by "hyperlink". Articles should not have external links put into the body of the text, only in the External Links section at the bottom. See WP:EL.
You can link to other articles by using a WP:WIKILINK.
If you wanted to link to a citation/reference, please follow the tutorial at WP:INTREFVE. Qcne (talk) 12:59, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Account deleted[edit]

How to reactivate my account someone tampered with? Acting4u (talk) 13:30, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Acting4u Could you be more specific? Are you requesting an un-block, or an account retrieval if yours was deleted? Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 13:39, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello and yes please, I request it to be unblock my account, and not sure if it was my doing with this speedy deletion mentioned as I don't even know what that means or what I may have done wrong?
    Thank you
    Ozzie Acting4u (talk) 14:15, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Acting4u As far as I can tell, you created this account in 2012 and at that time what you had done was speedily deleted (see your Talk Page). Then in 2017 you made a couple of edits, before starting again today. Some of your other edits may have been revision deleted but I can't confirm that. As of today, continuing to edit should be fine. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:50, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Mike but I still don't see my detailed page as previously just a blank. If this can be reactivated or unblocked would be greatly appreciated

I think they are complaining about the deletion of Ozzie Devrish, which they made extensive edits to, and was recently proposed for deletion. * Pppery * it has begun... 14:28, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! So that was "an unreferenced promotional WP:BLP" deleted by User:Explicit following an uncontested proposed deletion. @Acting4u, you may be able to use WP:REFUND to get the text back but I don't think it can go back into article space until the issues (such as lack of references) are addressed. Also, you have just suggested you are Ozzie, in which case this is your biography and you should carefully read our autobiography guideline which suggests that you are not the best person to write such an article owing to your conflict of interest. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:50, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thank you, yes I added the credits and my biography was originally written by my manager, I just added to it as mentioned with the credits etc Acting4u (talk) 15:06, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is worth noting, @Acting4u, that articles on Wikipedia are not owned by anyone. The article was about you, and you should not have been editing it directly due to your conflict of interest. Please read WP:OWN and WP:AUTOBIO. Qcne (talk) 15:17, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid that, like many people, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is. That article was not "your account" or "your page", it was Wikipedia's article about you, and it was highly undesirable that it be written by you or your associate.
A Wikipedia article about you, whoever writes it, should be a neutrally written summary of what people wholly unconnected with you, and not prompted or fed information on your behalf, have chosen to publish about you. You do not control its contents, and what you or your associates say or want to say is of little relevance. Your involvement in it, once it has been written, should be limited to making suggestions, which uninvolved editors will make the decision on. Please see an article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. ColinFine (talk) 15:22, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Acting4u, this thing has now been resuscitated as Draft:Ozzie Devrish. It has little text, but this currently includes (after markup-stripping): His fame came with an Australian TV series The Strip, following feature films such as Peter Pan, Chronicles of Narnia, The Condemned and many more prestigious productions that has enjoyed critical acclaim and international visibility. He demands the attention of elite casting directors in Hollywood and around the globe. This is promotional drivel. If you wish to demand people's attention, please do so on some other website. -- Hoary (talk) 00:43, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Ok thank you,
I'll change it with other items noted.

    Article about a terrorist[edit]

A terrorist has recently been active online after 10 years. He has become more silent and giving indirect provocations to violence online. Ten years ago he was recruited by UK based IS group. So as a precautionary measure I created an article which got deleted under A7. (There were citations from three independent news websites. There were few sentences initially.)

What to do in such cases? How can I store (authentic, cited) information about terrorists here on WikiPedia for future reference? Please advise. Kawrno Baba (talk) 15:26, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is not a place to merely store information. This is an encyclopedia. This isn't a place to merely tell the world about alleged terrorists. Please see MOS:TERRORIST. "Terrorist" is a highly charged word and should not be tossed around lightly. Also see WP:BLP. 331dot (talk) 15:31, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Contributing corrections or additional information, easily verified[edit]

I have attempted to contribute additional information (easily verifiable) to Wiki's articles, but have much luck. The three items I attempted to enhance previously were correct, but not accepted. I mistakenly submitted two as 'original research' when I could have cited articles in print, which I am willing to do. Now: I have additional information on the Bio of actor Seamon Glass re; three television performances he acted in (Perry Mason Show) and part of his teaching career, mid-fifties working for my father in Modoc Co. California -- where he also helped write some local history curriculum text books. What do I do? I've contributed what I can in money to Wikipedia; hope to send more. Wick Humble, MA retired teacher, veteran, author Wick Humble (talk) 16:47, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wick Humble: Hi there! I suggest reviewing Help:Introduction, which shows how to edit and provide independent published reliable sources. You can also post your suggestions on the article's talk page, Talk:Seamon Glass, and ask for others to update the article for you. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:32, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Wick Humble, and thank you for your contributions.
To get the finance out of the way first: your contributions are welcome (though some point out that the Wikimedia Foundation is not in need of funds at present), but has no connection whatever with editing. Nobody editing Wikipedia sees anything at all of what may or may not come in as financial contributions (and it is important that that is so).
As for your editing contributions: they all seem to have been several years ago, and the first one, to Chevrolet big-block engine, was not reverted as far as I can see. The second was removed as original research - you stated something without providing a reference for it. The third was removed a couple of weeks later as part of a "clean up selected filmography and removing non-noteworthy entries".
The thing is, this is how Wikipedia works. We all have our opinions of what should and shouldn't be in an article. Sometimes these are uncontroversial; sometimes people will disagree, and the way it works is called the bold, revert, discuss cycle: somebody boldly makes a change, somebody else disagrees and reverts it, and then they discuss the matter to reach consensus. Your second edit was contrary to policy, as it did not include a source. The third was less clear, and it came down to a difference of opinion.
For making edits to the article about Glass, you could be bold and insert the information, and see if somebody disagrees that it is appropriate and reverts you; or you could do as GoingBatty suggests, and start with a discussion on the talk page. But either way, you must be able to cite a reliably published source: your own knowledge is not enough. ColinFine (talk) 17:46, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi[edit]

I'm creating a medal table from a tournament of 1965, so there were old flags of some countries, like Hong Kong for example, so how can i show it's 1959 variant in the medal table?

      *   Host nation (India)

    RankNationGoldSilverBronzeTotal

    zoglophie•talk• 18:27, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Zoglophie: Please name pages you want help with. I assume it's about 1965 Asian Badminton Championships and you want to use {{Medals table}}. The flag_template parameter can be used for some events but there is no support for the Asian Badminton Championships. The only way I can find if {{Medals table}} is used is to change the output with a string function. It's not pretty, it's hard to edit with VisualEditor, and it may fail later if the involved file names change, but this works now to replace File:Flag of Hong Kong.svg with File:Flag of Hong Kong 1959.svg:
    {{MultiReplace
    |plain=yes
    |1={{Medals table
     | caption =
     | host = IND
     | flag_template = flagcountry
     | event =
     | team =
     | gold_HKG = 1 | silver_HKG = 1 | bronze_HKG = 3
    }}
    |2=Flag of Hong Kong
    |3=Flag of Hong Kong 1959
    }}

      *   Host nation (India)

    RankNationGoldSilverBronzeTotal
    1 Hong Kong1135
    Totals (1 entries)1135
Other replacements can be made with 4=...|5=..., and so on. You have to identify the file names first, or try guessing. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:40, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    How to revert title change?[edit]

How do I revert a title change? The article titled "Horatio Caine" in existence since 2006 was recently retitled "H. Caine" with no sensible explanation. A redirect page was also created. I can edit articles, but I don't know how to edit titles or how to properly revert/delete redirects. Can you help? Jaguar766 (talk) 21:24, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can go to the right side of your screen (or top right tools bar, depending on your setting) and click move, entering in the title. This won't work unless you have no redirect, so instead you would need to revert the move. To revert a page move previously done, find the move log entry (you can find this by going to Special:Log, clicking the drop-down menu and clicking "Move log" when you find it, they are in alphabetical order), enter in the page's name in the "Target" field, and there should be a revert button when you find the move. Click it, enter your reason, and click "Move page", and it will be reverted. I believe this is the process, but I could be wrong. -- ThatOneWolf (ChatEdits 22:30, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I found the "revert" button on the "Move log", but I don't want to swap it back until I delete the redirect because it states "The old title will become a redirect page to the new title." If "Horatio Caine" redirects to "H. Caine" and is not deleted and "H. Caine" redirects to "Horatio Caine" after the move, the two will cancel each other and could end up in a cycle to nowhere. Or does the "revert" button on the "Move log" also automatically delete the "Horatio Caine" to "H. Caine" redirect? Is there a way to delete the "Horatio Caine" to "H. Caine" redirect first? I don't want to mess things up. Jaguar766 (talk) 23:58, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the move done on the page you are talking about, I find valid reason for the move. The person who moved it said that it was moved because H. Caine is the name of the character, and is referred to as that rather than the common name. You can look at the reason in the page's history for a better understanding, but I feel a revert would be unnecessary, although I could be misunderstanding. -- ThatOneWolf (ChatEdits 00:10, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You obviously never watched the show. The character's name is "Horatio Caine". He was sometimes called "H" as a nickname, one syllable is easier than four, but only sometimes. Jaguar766 (talk) 01:06, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But, in case you want me to answer your question for future moves, I think you would have to ask someone else who has more experience than me. I haven't been around too long compared to others, and I'm not completely sure if doing that would mess things up, but I do believe that it wouldn't, again though, don't hold me to it. -- ThatOneWolf (ChatEdits 00:12, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, where would I ask someone else how to delete a redirect? Would the Teahouse be appropriate? And thank you for your help not only with the "revert" button but also with the "Move" under "Tools". I had seen that link for years and never knew its purpose. Jaguar766 (talk) 01:07, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Jaguar766. To move a page when you can't do it yourself (eg over a redirect, or for a user too new to have access to the Move function), you can raise a request for a "technical move" at requested moves.
However, it is clear from ThatOneWolf's reply above that this is not an uncontested move, so you should get consensus on the article's talk page before requesting it be moved back. ColinFine (talk) 09:34, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'll start with the talk page and see how that goes. Thank you. Jaguar766 (talk) 21:35, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    April 16[edit]

Hi, a user recently edited this page by removing "Italian-American cuisine" and adding "Italian cuisine" ([1]; without adequate explanation), after many years that "Italian-American cuisine" was present on this page; I would like to hear other opinions. I'm familiar with this dish, and the way it has evolved it's no longer part of Italian cuisine, yet today in this encyclopaedia it has automatically become Italian (there is no dish called "fettuccine Alfredo" in Italy, we have "pasta al burro", but it's a bit different); what we do in this situation? JacktheBrown (talk) 02:12, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: There is already discussion of this on the article's talk page. If you and the other editor can't reach consensus through that discussion, try WP:DR. RudolfRed (talk) 03:26, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Despite what JackkBrown says, the dish was created in Rome by Alfredo Di Lelio at the restaurant Alfredo alla Scrofa over 100 years ago, and so it is an Italian dish even if it is now more popular in the United States than in Italy. Every dish has its variations and certainly the contemporary American versions are different in the sense that cream is used in the sauce in addition to butter and parmesan cheese. That does not mean that they are two different dishes. They are different versions of the same original dish that was marketed to American tourists in Rome starting in the 1920s. Cullen328 (talk) 06:45, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mean to stir the sauce here, however – it may be true that this dish exists on the website of a restaurant in Rome that bills itself as its originator, but what JackkBrown writes is also true: in Italy, there is no such thing as "Fettuccine Alfredo", at least not beyond the front door of the restaurant (or restaurants) trying to cash-in on the "origin" story in order to sell "pasta in bianco" to American tourists for €24 a plate (...only extra €25 with truffles, €50 with caviar, very good, you want Mister? "King of Noodles" indeed). Gambero Rosso has a somewhat tongue in cheek piece which gets to the heart of the matter here, and our friends on Italian Wikipedia summarise it well too (see Diffusione e varianti section). Mostly, picky children and those recovering from illness get "pasta in bianco". -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 15:07, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to cite sources from a Google Drive link[edit]

Hello. I'm editing articles about historical elections, and I have received archived returns from a state board of elections, however, these files are in a downloadable PDF form located on a Google Drive. Can't find it on any other web page. How would I go about citing these returns? Longestview (talk) 04:21, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Longestview, you should not cite to a Google Drive. Sources should be published and it sounds like those return forms have been sent to you personally by the local election body? That means they are not "published". Instead, you could cite them offline via Template:Cite_document and put the onus on the reader to request the returns if they wanted to check the reference. I found two topics that are either poorly covered or nearly synonymous, what do I do, what do, where do I find a consensus about merging (or fixing) more than two pages at once.

    Number one is scientific communication/debate/discourse

Number two is the independence of media

For clarity, I haven't tried anything yet, and am just unsure about what to do. JackTheSecond (talk) 12:18, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JackTheSecond: You can tag pairs (or triples; but I would start simple) of articles with {{merge}}, or {{merge to}}/ {{merge from}}, and start a discussion on one of their talk pages, per the documentation of those templates. I know that, the problem with it is that none of the pages on scientific discourse having a significant amount of watchers. JackTheSecond (talk) 12:31, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You say you know that, and yet your question was "what do I do, what do, where do I find a consensus about merging (or fixing) more than two pages at once". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:34, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JackTheSecond, if you believe a merge is not controversial, you can simply do the merge. There's info at Wikipedia:Merging. Valereee (talk) 14:25, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JackTheSecond:When you have an editorial opinion on a merge, then open a discussion using the merge templates and processes described above. If there are few watchers and/or little input from other editors, then after about a week of (non)discussion, go ahead and perform the merges. Basically you are an editor with just as much authority to make this decision as any other editor. You think it's an improvement, nobody bothered to oppose you, so just do it. If there is an objection later, that will open the discussion. -Arch dude (talk) 15:17, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding information[edit]

    <deleted advertisement>2403:5808:BC08:1:0:0:0:FE58 (talk) 16:44, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't appear that we have an article about that particlar Chris Howard. If you can find the required independent reliably published sources to establish that he meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, (remember, that nothing written, published, commissioned, or based on information directly from him or his associates counts towards this), then there could be an article.
You could add it to requested articles, but to be honest the take-up from there is very little.
It is possible, but not very likely, that the topic might capture somebody's interest and they might write it.
The most likely way for you to get that article included in Wikipedia is by writing it yourself. I need to warn you, though, that creating a new article is one of the most challenging tasks there is for new editors, and people who attempt it before they have spent a few months learning how Wikipedia works by making edits and interacting with other editors usually have a frustrating and disappointing experience.
My advice would be to put Chris Howard aside for a while, read Help:Introduction and begin learning how to be a Wikipedia editor, and when you've got a grasp of some basic ideas (especially notability) read your first article, and come back to it.
One more note: if you are Howard, or are connected with him, then your task is likely to be even more difficult, because your conflict of interest my make it more difficult to write in the required neutral tone. Whatever you do, do not pay anybody to write an article. No paid editors are in any way accredited by Wikipedia, and many of them are scammers. ColinFine (talk) 17:01, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Vulgar fraction policy[edit]

Emptying out categories to get them speedy deleted[edit]

I've come across this behaviour several times, where an editor seems to disagree with the existence of a category or category tree for whatever reason so they start removing the category from every page so that they can nominate it for speedy deletion.

To me personally, this seems very dishonest to do as it circumvents the category for discussion process. In my opinion doing this intentionally should be discouraged if not outright banned. ★Trekker (talk) 23:03, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@★Trekker Now, that's very interesting to me, because I'd thought of doing it myself. That's following seeing it suggested here, somewhere, for the cases I'm concerned with.
I've been largely doing cleanups of categories--mainly biological ones. And I'm thinking, for example, of a very large category for some biological family. There might be a genus or two in that family with lots of species; these could well be made into subcategories (and I've made many categories and moved literally thousands of species); it makes the family category more manageable, and gives some improved order to the subcategory for the genus.
But I find a lot of these categories with subcategories that contain three or two species, or even just one. And usually, they're not likely ever to have any more. It makes a clutter of subcategories that do virtually nothing to make the main category more manageable. When I think about running them all up for approval for deletion, it occurs to me that nobody approved their creation in the first place. I'm sure of that; I've created hundreds of categories (did one just a day or two ago, and put over 90 articles into it). Uporządnicki (talk) 00:21, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Hi IP 102.85.68.255. Assuming this is about Ritah Asiimwe and you're "Ritah Asiimwe", please take a look at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Relationship between the subject, the article, and Wikipedia and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Wikipedia doesn't have profiles per se like perhaps you might find on social media; it has encyclopedic articles written about subjects based on what reliable sources have said about said subjects. So, if you tried to edit the article today using another IP address, then that's OK; however, from here on it's probably better for you to make edit requests at Talk:Ritah Asiimwe instead and propose the changes you'd like made. I've reverted the syntax errors introduced earlier today by another IP account, and I also did some minor copyediting and syntax clean up. You should, however, use the article's talk page to propose the changes to the infobox that you think should be made. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:50, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article heading glitchy on mobile version[edit]

The 'track listing' heading on Saturns Pattern isn't displaying properly on the mobile phone version of the article - it's appearing vertically. I thought I'd fixed it by adding extra spacing - when I tested it, by copying the whole article into my sandbox, it looks okay on my mobile - but didn't work in the article when I tried the same fix. Many thanks! IndigoBeach (talk) 08:43, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Italian singers[edit]

Italian topics, obviously, aren't the most important in the encyclopedia, but I would like to point out a big problem: I have noticed that the titles of Italian songs and albums are often written in English: this doesn't make sense (for example on the Gino Santercole page); it's correct to write the translation, but it's not correct to use only the title translated into English. It's very important to be more careful, also because I'm one and I cannot correct the whole encyclopedia. JacktheBrown (talk) 11:57, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: You might want to raise this at WT:WikiProject Italy (and on individual article talk pages). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:23, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:COMMONNAME would indicate that if the song is known by an English language name, then that is the correct one to use in an English language encyclopaedia.Martin of Sheffield (talk) 14:28, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JackkBrown is frustrated that editors mechanically translate Italian song titles when translating from Italian Wikipedia, for example here. I agree that it is frustrating, but don't have a solution to the problem. TSventon (talk) 14:41, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: there is a solution: the pages of Italian singers should be created by Italians (e.g., an excellent user is LukeWiller), as they know the titles in Italian. JacktheBrown (talk) 14:46, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
MOS:QUOTEFOREIGN says When editors themselves translate foreign text into English, care must always be taken to include the original text, in italics. As the editor was translating it Wikipedia, they knew the Italian title, but they appear not to have known that they should have kept the Italian titles. TSventon (talk) 15:08, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: I think that a large-scale control is indispensable, as I said, as far as I can do, I remain one person. JacktheBrown (talk) 16:56, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not going to happen on this website, any more than "Christian topics for Christians only". Italians can choose to show up and edit. If they don't, they don't and content will be made by others. And why specifically "Italian singers" instead of "Italian mountaineers"? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:14, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: "And why specifically "Italian singers" instead of "Italian mountaineers"?". Only for Italian singers because:

there is a solution: the pages of Italian singers should be created by Italians (e.g., an excellent user is LukeWiller), as they know the titles in Italian. JacktheBrown (talk) 14:46, 17 April 2024 (UTC)

    JacktheBrown (talk) 18:58, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JackkBrown, when you write there is a solution: the pages of Italian singers should be created by Italians, I can assure you that your proposal absolutely will not be accepted. One of our core principles is that Wikipedia is the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit, as lomg as they comply with policies and guidelines. We are not going to carve out an exception for Italian topics. And how would this large scale control that you mention even be implemented? We have policies and guidelines that we are all expected to follow, but no mechanism for large scale control of content matters. As for notable Italian topics, they are no less important than any other notable topics. Rome is just as important as London and Florence is just as important as Dallas. Cullen328 (talk) 17:27, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cullen328: that's not true: American and British topics are preferred, just look at the statistics; I agree that Italy, United States and United Kingdom are equally important in this encyclopaedia, but they are treated differently; suffice it to say that most of my edits concern Italian topics, and I have not yet finished correcting and improving the pages. JacktheBrown (talk) 17:41, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    What's not true? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:10, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: the fact that Italian topics, as preference, are equal to American and British ones; based on the views of the various pages, this isn't true. Mine isn't a complaint. JacktheBrown (talk) 18:49, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cullen said nothing about "equal". Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:06, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: then I misinterpreted the comment. JacktheBrown (talk) 19:13, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JackkBrown, there is no connection between "importance" and the number of page views. Many popular culture topics get very heavy page views. For example, Richard Lewis (comedian) died on February 27, and in the next week, his biography was the third most heavily viewed article on this website. That does not mean that Lewis is more "important" than Rome or Michelangelo or Sicily. Cullen328 (talk) 23:44, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328: now I understand what you mean, thank you. JacktheBrown (talk) 00:54, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm in the early stages of writing an article about 1980s UK film-maker Cliff Twemlow, and when checking to see what WP already has on him (very little, and no article) I found this page, which appears to be a WP article about him, and states "This article is issued from Wikipedia", the link being to a deleted page with oldid=1081611956. hii, Am i arulkrishna, i have to tried many times to create our organization related informative wikipage Arulkrishna2096 (talk) 04:47, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Arulkrishna2096. Are you aware of Wikipedia:The answer to life, the universe, and everything, Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies)? If not, then perhaps you should take a look at those pages. The only way any article about your organization is going to be allowed to be created is if the subject matter clearly is considered to be Wikipedia:Notable; this means that it's clearly the case your organization has received significant coverage in multiple reliable secondary sources. Furthermore, anyone personally or profressionally associated with the organization in more than a casual way is almost certainly going to be considered to have a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and thus shouldn't really be trying to create such an article themselves. Moreover, depending upon the nature of their association, such a person could also be subject to Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure regarding any content created or edited about the organization on Wikipedia. Finally, assuming your edit here on April 11 was just a mistake, then that's OK; just please don't make any more similar edits in the future. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:08, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
