Facts[edit]

Charles Chesnutt was born on June 20, 1858. He died in November 1932. When he was only 13 years old his mom died and had to work to raise money for his family. Both of his parents were mullatoes, which meant that they were of mixed racial ancestry.

Inaccuracies/No sources[edit]

There are no sources in the "Life" section, and there are claims made there that I've never heard before, specifically these: "His parents offered to sell him into slavery, but their potential buyer could not come up with more than $23 to pay for him." "It was suspected, however, that he had an affair with Ralph Waldo Emerson, which caused an almost irreversible rift in his marriage, until Susan decided to take him back." Note that Emerson would've been at least 75 years old at this time, and I've never heard such claims about Emerson's sexuality.

These statements about Chesnutt should be removed unless there's a source for them. BillAlbertini (talk) 03:37, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I concur, and have removed it. I suspect it is a cleverer-than-usual prank, particularly since Emerson is the least likely of all contemporary literary figures to have been party to a scandal of any type. Lindmere (talk) 20:07, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stamp image removal[edit]

I have removed the stamp image File:Chesnutt stamp.jpg because it a non-free image of a stamp that fails WP:NFC#Images which clearly states: Stamps and currency: For identification of the stamp or currency, not its subject, which was the use here, so it may not be used in this article. This use is improper and must be removed. If you disagree you may want to familiarise yourself with the following: WP:NFCC#3a, WP:NFCC#8, WP:NFC#Images, and this FAQ to better understand the issues. Fragment[edit]

The Conjure Woman links[edit]

I changed the links to that collection from directing to the movie to directing to TCW (stories)--although eventually the book should take the main namespace and the film should be moved. Right now the book title redirects to this page, so the links are circular, but I hope that someone will create an article for the book soon. Aristophanes68 (talk) 02:44, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Word Choice[edit]

In the "legal and writing career" section, it states that Chesnutt's stories featured "Negro dialect." While this is likely the term Chesnutt would have used in his time, today is outdated and potentially offensive. Since "Negro dialect" already links to the article by the preferred term, "African American Vernacular English," I propose changing "Negro dialect" to "African American Vernacular English." Chesnutt's family[edit]
