Origin of "Parkway"[edit]

It seems like the name "parkways" may have originated from connecting these roads to the public parks (rather than being scenic roads as suggested in the wiki article.) I believe Robert Moses started as a NYC parks commissoner. The "parkways" were necessary to make the parks he built accessible to the public. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.118.98.99 (talk) 00:11, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No, the term "Parkway" came into use a few years before Robert Moses was born. No, his biographical Wikipedia article has its flaws, but it clearly indicates that he worked as a bill drafter before he ever became President of the Long Island State Park Commission, where he indeed promoted many great parkways to connect his new parks, but he was right not to claim originality in this matter. He also got his NYC Parks job after that. Much about Dr Moses is in dispute, but these bare sequences are not. Jim.henderson 03:45, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of parkways[edit]

The size of the list has gotten to the point that it should be spun off into a separate article. However, I also believe that there are just too many parkways to list -- particularly when it comes to surface streets with "parkway" in the name. As with the list of roundabouts, I feel that such a list could quickly become extremely bloated; and I would nominate it for AfD. There are numerous parkways in MD, PA, and NJ which I am holding off on adding in for that very reason. I feel that a category for parkways would be much more appropriate, as that shifts notability criteria to a per-article basis rather than a massive list of otherwise unnotable roadways. I intend to remove this information from this article within the week, barring any objections; and I welcome others to create a List of parkways or a category for parkways instead, though again note that I will put the former through AfD. --Bossi (talk ;; contribs) 03:13, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Per no complaints, I am finally proceeding with this recommendation; but I will create a "Parkways" category (which was not my intention back in March). --Bossi (talkgallerycontrib) 17:15, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image & trivia[edit]

The image does little to show what exactly a parkway is and the trivia section does not seem at all encyclopedic. I will see about uploading some images of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway or the Clara Barton Parkway hopefully this week (they're on my work computer, and knowing me: I'll keep forgetting to transfer them to my home computer). As for the trivia, I intend to remove this section within the week barring any significant objections. --Bossi (talk ;; contribs) 03:13, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Issues[edit]

This article is about a word, not about a type of road. Hmmmm.... Nankai (talk) 09:43, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article has drifted into being about the various meanings of the word Parkway. I have ensured that its various points are mentioned at Controlled-access highway, scenic route and the remaining loose ends at Parkway (disambiguation) and I wonder whether there is a need for this article to exist. But I don't know what the cultural weight behind the concept of the various types of road called parkway is: is there some sort of American parkway movement? I won't be doing any PRODding just now! Nankai (talk) 02:53, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Parkways are the predecessor to the modern freeway in North America. In the first half of the 20th century they were built pretty extensively (especially in the 20s), many for the sole purpose of Sunday drivers going for a scenic drive. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 03:37, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Any objections to attempted deletion?[edit]

To follow up on User:Nankai's question, I don't personally see any reason for this article to exist as an article; instead it should be replaced by the disambiguation page currently at Parkway (disambiguation) which usefully points the reader to whichever of the many meanings of "parkway" the reader is looking for. I don't quite get what ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ is saying; is there any specific content at all that should live here rather than at, say, limited access highways? Rolf H Nelson (talk) 02:15, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

To point at a similar situation, I should add that motorway doesn't currently seem to need a page of its own. Rolf H Nelson (talk) 02:17, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Motorway does have an article of its own, controlled access highway. I still believe that this deserves an article to cover the concept, but you can always nominate it for deletion and see what the community feels. - Floydian τ ¢ 14:54, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe the solution is to clarify what the article's about then; I'm not clear on what concept the page is covering. Rolf H Nelson (talk) 23:35, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
