Is this really an encyclopedia entry? Do we need a "Wikipedia is not a foreign language textbook" guideline too? Hmm. I get so confused. -- mib 11:51 May 4, 2003 (UTC)

Should there be a "Wikipedia is not a foreign language textbook" guideline? Wikipedia is after all an encyclopedia. Encyclopedias are meant to cover everything. Kanji is an article of knowledge. Each character in it is an article of knowledge (what it looks like, how its drawn, how it can be interpreted etc.). There's no set rule against an encyclopedia having info on foreign languages - it's just that they've not had room to cover it in books or on CD. Space isn't as much of an issue online. That, and the fact that there's no decent free Kanji resources on the net. -- Daveryan 23:20 May 4, 2003 (UTC)

mib, please notice the fact that we already cover alphabets and greek letters. Besides, there are a lot of articles covering foreign words already, particularly from western languages. Yes, probably thousands of entries might be a problem but some number should be so bad. -- Taku 01:34 May 5, 2003 (UTC)

Anyway, this debate seems to have got little cluttered. Please use Wikipedia:WikiProject Chinese characters for further debate. Mib, you are not the only one who thinks strange about kanji entries. -- Taku 01:34 May 5, 2003 (UTC)~

There is no point in having this page in wikipedia. Instead of starting something ridiculous like this, just include a link on the main kanji article to a number of incredible resources that are out there. Might I suggest http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html ? As for covering something like the greek alphabet, thats an entirely different issue. The greek alphabet is used in mathematics, as well as other fields. Even the inclusion of the cyrillic alphabet is somewhat dubious, but it might as well stay, since it is not several thousand characters in size.

These pages should be renamed to match Wikipedia's naming policy. Each Kanji should be moved from "Kanji Reference Index:YYY" to "YYY (Kanji)". The parent pages should be renamed to "List of Kanji by ZZZ". - SimonP 01:10, Dec 21, 2004 (UTC)
