It's a letter in the !Xu language and many other related languages. It is also used in IPA to represent the same sound. (I actually thought it was a lateral click, but User:Adam Bishop might just as well be right and it might be an alveolar one.) -- Timwi 13:20 17 Jun 2003 (UTC)

The letter !x is a single consonant in and of itself. This is why one shouldn't just drop the !: the resulting meaning is different. The click indicated by !x is phonetically a lamino-palatal voiceless click with velar-affricated release. thefamouseccles 23:57 22 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Yes, these are really identical. !Xu is the phonetic spelling of the word in the !Xu language. The transliteration used by most anthropologists is !Kung; however, it'd be like calling French "Frawnsai" (the pronunciation of the French word for their language: français). !Xu is more accurate in terms of the language, and any language with !Kung in the name (for instance !O!Kung, forest !Kung) has a synonym with !Xu in the name (in this case, !o!xu~). thefamouseccles 22:14 16 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Nope - !Kung and !Xoo are two different languages. There are more than thirty Khoisan languages, some of which have very different names (!Kung is different from !O !Kung, too). thefamouseccles 04:29 05 Apr 2004 (UTC)
