USS Halibut (SSGN 587) was a use to find and take pictures of the soviet sub K21 which had sunk miles of the cost of hawaii in the high of the cold war, the K21 was the one of the soviets floating missle platforms. The K21 was thought to be surfacing to recharge her batteries when and explosion occured and it sunk to the ocean floor. The crew of the USS Halibut (SSGN 587) where said to be kept in the dark about its operations and only the captain and vice captain and the intellegance officer knew what there mission was. When the USS Halibut (SSGN 587) returned to port the crew were honoured but they were unsure as to what they had done
