Should references to "the Bahamas" be "The Bahamas"?[edit]

When the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is referenced should it be referred to as "The Bahamas" instead of "the Bahamas"? This is how I see the commonwealth referenced on the Bahamian government web pages and other sources like the CIA World Factbook but interestingly not in the UN list of members. I'm not a Bahamian so I hope someone with knowledge can comment. LeeGriffinNC (talk) 14:03, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

From looking at The Bahamas, usage there is inconsistent, and there's no clear consensus on that article's talk page either. The most recent discussion there, Talk:The Bahamas/Archive 1#Discussion of capitalized "The" in the official name, was inconclusive, but leaned toward not capitalizing as per most style guides. I'd recommend capitalizing it here only when the full name is used ("Commonwealth of The Bahamas"), but not otherwise ("the Bahamas"), which is what is done in this article already.
