Hybrid Grape[edit]

I returned Rubired and Ruby Cabernet to the red wine section of List of grape varieties. They are not hybrids in the sense used when talking about grapes. That is they are hybrids of two Vitis vinifera varieties but they are not hybrid grapes which are crosses of Vitis vinifera (European) grapes with any of the American grape species (usually Vitis lambrusca or Vitis riparia). Grape Stubs[edit]

Please keep working on grape varieties. To further explain I wouldn't expect to find different short entries for dog, chien, hund because different countries have different names for one animal. Wikipedia is a general encyclopedia (well, sort of). The Alverhao thing appears to go back to mid-September when User:129.130.245.161 added the incorrect information. That user's only contributions appear to be badly formatted cut-and-paste jobs from online wine encyclopedias, leaving lots to clean up and copyright concerns in some cases. I listed Category:Vititculturists on Wikipedia:Categories for deletion so it should go away. User:Justinc set up both the categories, wineries and vineyards. I believe it was with the idea that wineries would cover the business entities that produce wine often owning several plots of land which may have their own names. These named plots would be listed on category vineyards. But I can't find where I may have read that. Certainly neither category has many entries yet. Rmhermen 18:06, Oct 31, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on grape varieties, had started on some of them when I was working on German wine but were lots missing, and I have since moved onto comprehensovely doing the French AOC system, because it was easier to work out what to do than German classification, but today stumbled on Müller-Thurgau which I had meant to write before. Some of the stub articles for different spellings was my fault, when I started Germany I put info on German pinot noir under spatburgunder. Later I split pinot noir by country to put this information in and think that works pretty well for cases where there are interesting things to say about how its used in different countries Justinc 18:40, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Lat/Lon[edit]

I noticed that you have changed some lat/lon figures from west to east. I think they are now not correct. I have got my own figures (example: Clifton Reynes from paper ordnance survey maps. Longitude is measured in degrees from the grenwich meridian. It never goes more than 180 degrees. If it is 20 degrees west then it is also 340 degrees east but it is called 20 degrees west as 340 is more than 180. Borb 12:12, 24 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have just discovered that you have talked to bluemoose about this matter and I think what you have done is in fact correct. Thank you for creating so many articles for communes in the Ain département. When you get the chance, would you be interested in jumping down the alphabet to Lot département? Communes of the Lot département, which looks at lot like Communes of the Ain département (no pun intended) has been in cleanup since October 2004, and having more blue links would go a long way toward cleaning it up. Bot[edit]

I've a plan to write a bot to create decent stubs for French Communes. I've done some manual work on the Le Puy series which shows the sort of thing (with additional human editing). The output side of the bot is largely complete and I've some work done on screen-scraping for input. Haven't got around to looking for permission to run it yet! list of AOCs[edit]

Er, I think you listed the entries from the Hachette wine library Dictionary of wine. Actually this is a very bad list of AOCs, as things like "Alsace pinot ou klevner" are not AOCs, just the way the book does things. While it is a good listing, please use the official AOC list of possible, especially for the list (which I see only as a temporary matter before we get all the AOCs done). If you use that book, use the official AOCs it lists in the entries (and bear in mind that while it is a good fill in, not all the details are that accurate).

The INAO website sucks. I think the Appellation is "Vin de Savoie" (for example) and the rest are just variants and shouldnt appear on our list, but still not sure... Justinc 17:58, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think I have worked out how to use the INAO site now. If you click through the terrible flash menu system to an individual item, when the actual popup appears it does tell you the real AOC at the bottom. I think all the mousseaux etc ones are bogus, and I think there is only one Savoie, not all the subdivisions, but I think you are allowed to show the more specific ones on the label (hence they have entries on their site). I will try to edit them all out in one edit so it is easy to revert if this isnt correct and label it in the history, once I have finished browsing INAO and my other references (Alsace I am sure about which is why I deleted them before). The Hachette book is missing some Rhone appelations that have been there since 1975 that are on this list which really annoys me, as its not that old and I only bought it (very cheaply) to help fill them in. And I realised that my attempt to de-redlink all the grape varieties in the AOCs I had done before was not complete. Ah well. Justinc 23:47, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I was looking at the St John's Wood tube station page at read the bit about the trivia. Looking at the history I noticed you had added it in!

Obviously the "mackrel" bit is quite common, but I was fascinated to read about all the others you mentioned - particularly other stations' words...

Long story short - I think that is a great topic area and it'd be great if you could make a page about it - illustrating examples. The protagonists do not look about to resolve it among themselves, so I'd appreciate it if you and other regular editors could express your views on this part of the page, so that we can stop the war going forward, or at least block a protagonist who persists in it. Quick clarification on the dates[edit]

Howdy, I just ran across your article Notre-Dame de Boulogne in Special:Newpages and wished to nominate it to run on the Main Page as part of the DYK section. I was hoping to use the selling off and demolishing of the old cathedral as the hook, but could use a clarification on the exact date worship there was prohibited, or when the building was sold off, or when it was demolished. Does the literature provide any of these? I ask because the revolutionary governments were kind of short-lived, and it'd be nice to pin one of the events down to either the National Convention, Directory, or Consulate (since the Empire is excluded due to the date.) A long time ago...[edit]

... you started this article. I'm trying to get List of people associated with Jesus College, Oxford to Featured List status at the moment, and Lord Thomas is proving to be a bit of a problem! I'm trying to find sources for (a) when he graduated - I know he matriculated in 1938, but did he complete his degree before joining up or did he complete it after the war? (b) what his degree was in - I assume law, but I may be wrong. Who's Who doesn't really help me, and I can't find anything particularly helpful through Google. List of snakes by common name[edit]

Hi Smb1001! Question: why did you copy the old contents of List of snakes to the new article List of snakes by common name? As an explanation you gave "Addition of text previously the body of List of snakes until replace by scientific classification." However, isn't that exactly what was done? Hi. As I'm sure you spotted, the List of snakes page was a list by common name until it the content was unilaterally deleted in favour of the scientific classification. Though I approve of that change in principle, I still feel there's a place for the list by common name and so readded it on a new page, as you saw. What are you proposing be done? Delete it. That may sound uncompromising, but I figure there are a number of good reasons to do so:

As I once commented in the discussion section of the original article, if you know that there are currently some 2,700 species of snakes -- over 3,500 if you count the subspecies and genera along as well -- and if you figure that there are at least two common names for every taxon (there are over 30 for Agkistrodon piscivorus), then you will eventually end up with a list of at least 7,000 names. That's far too long to be practical.
Since there's not much of a system to common names, they will mostly all be jumbled among each other, so it can offer little insight, i.e. there's little educational value, so why maintain such a list? (That in itself will not be easy).
Snakes have been an important hobby of mine for almost 40 years, but even I don't recognized some of the names on that list. The problem here is that the contributers don't say which species they belong to or where they got them either, so how are we supposed to know what to do with them? They could just as well be nonsense names and we'd never know it.
Finally, a real drawback. Such a list can actually inspire people to create new articles using those links, which can easily lead to articles that fall outside of the ITIS taxonomy we mean to follow. That's a waste of effort. I run into such articles every once in a while when creating redirects for common names.

Don't get me wrong here: I don't think there are many here at are WP who take common names as seriously as I do. It's just that they are not helpful in creating the orderly framework we need for the snake project, which is why I don't like to see their use being encouraged so directly. I'm not against lists either. For example, I just made one today: List of pythonid species and subspecies.

Instead, what I propose is to make more lists like these and integrate them in List of snakes. That article will then contain the following:

A list of all snake families, subfamilies and genera along with their common names (if known). We have this.
Lists of lists of species and subspecies by family or subfamily. Sometimes, these lists may have to be subdivided further. E.g., "List of elapid species and subspecies" would be too long, so we could split off sublists for large genera like Micrurus (coral snakes).
Lists of common name categories by family and subfamily. For example: Category:Rattlesnakes by common name and Category:True vipers by common name. These will have to be reordered and renamed, but you get the idea.
Lists of synonym categories by family and subfamily. For example: Category:Rattlesnakes by taxonomic synonyms and Category:True vipers by taxonomic synonyms. Again, these will be modified.

So, what do you think... does this sound like a plan or what? :-) It may look ambitious, but I don't think anything like this exists yet and it'll be really cool when it's finished!! Such a system will also have the advantage that if people use these red links to create new snake articles, the resulting articles will fall neatly within the taxonomy we follow, often with readily available geographic range information from the genus articles. Thanks for the explanation. I fully understand your scientific rationale and agree with the vast majority of it. I'd also plead that my aim with the article was predominantly linguistic not taxonomic. A central point is that the vast majority of people who approach an article on a species of snake will do so from the starting point of the common name. In doing so they will of course be guided further by your excellent work on classification, but the common names still form the human face of the subject.

I don't accept your point that the sheer number makes it impractical; such a thought would render a dictionary impractical. Nor that it encourages articles outside the official taxonomy; if nothing else we should be tying the common names to their linnaean counterparts to actually encourage additions in the appropriate place from people who would otherwise be unaware of such intimidating Latin nomenclature.

But above all my aim is certainly not to tread on your toes here. Articles like this can live side by side -- eg List of plants by common name & List of garden plants, with the former a valuable spur for the latter. The snake page is not currently of the quality required, but I don't see a reason that it couldn't be. Finally (this will doubtless seem trivial, but it's a common use for such list pages I assure you) if someone is looking for info on a snake they were told about, "funny word, began with an 'h'", or "definitely had 'dwarf' in the name", then there is no other resource for it! How you're going to maintain such a long list is still a mystery to me. As for any quality, you know that's a fantasy. In reality, you're going to continue to rely on people like myself to hunt down all the common names for the species, create redirects for them, and only then will your common names link to the articles for the correct taxa. And that doesn't even always work. For example, I may already have a redirect for "Green palm pitviper", but what if your list contains "Green palm pit viper" or "Green Palm Pitviper"? In both cases there would be no link... unless I periodically check your list and make some extra redirects. And that's only if I recognize the name. However, I'll be honest with you: the idea of regularly scouring such a long list for unnecessary red links does not appeal to me.

And why would it not encourage articles to be created outside the official taxonomy? For example, if somebody sees that "Green Palm Pitviper" is a red link, they can still use it to start a new article. They can fill in the taxobox too, and they'd never know they were working on a duplicate article as long as they didn't try to make any redirects for the valid scientific name. Or they could make a redirect for an invalid scientific name. Either way, there would be no sign that anything was amiss.

How about this for an alternative: we add an extra category tag to all the common name redirects that we have for snake articles in order to create one huge category specifically meant for browsing common names. That would be in addition to the more specific category tags those redirects are already have. Think about it: never any red links, always accurate, automatic maintenance, and three columns means more names per screen. On the other hand, you'd have to go though 35 pages of 200 names to get to the end, but maybe the developers could help us with that. You could also chop the list into smaller sections by creating additional subcategories for "Rat snakes", "Rattlesnakes", "Sea snakes" and whatever, similar to what you already have. You may be onto something there, though you're evidently meaning it pejoratively. No objections as you clearly have a plan. Forgive me if my tone sounded disparaging, but I've been open about my position. I'm admitting that you have a point when you say that there is a need for such a list or way in to the actual articles. My last idea will be a lot of work, but I think it'll be worth it. Right now I estimate that there are over 1,000 common name redirects for snake articles, and those are just for the ones that I've worked on, so perhaps I shall create a bot to help with some of the larger common name categories that already exist. Some examples of what already exists:

If it's any help I've run a script over a processed copy of wp from 11/1/07 to find all pages redirecting to pages in one of a set of snake categories. It suffers from being 8 months old, but may be useful. It has 275 lines (I doubt I've found all the categories) and begins...

That's nice, but I'm not sure we should use that (even if we can). Importing names like this without checking them first may turn out to haunt us later. Peter Uetz, the guy who set up the EMBL (NRDB) reptile database, created a problem for himself in a similar fashion. He thought he needed more common names too, so he found a way to use a book by Frank & Ramus (1996) called A Complete Guide to Scientific and Common Names of Reptiles and Amphibians of the World and imported the lot into his database. All seemed fine, until he discovered that Frank & Ramus made up many of the names themselves, and many were not even accurate (e.g. Bocage's horned adder doesn't have any horns). Now he's stuck with those names. In other words, it's probably safer if we build up our own database slowly and methodically and don't take any shortcuts. Besides, very many existing common name redirects use upper case, which doesn't sort properly among lower case names (now also preferred by WP:MOS). Sources used for radio station stubs[edit]

Hi, I was browsing Category:Eastbourne (my home town) and came upon the stub for Sovereign Radio. While tidying it up a little, I noticed that the categories (and infobox, which I now realise has been there since the original sub-stub) stated that it first aired in 1997, and added this to the text.

What I was wondering is where you got this information from in the first place, so that: a) a reference can be added to the article, and b) any additional information from the same source could be added. Some Wikipedia conventions[edit]

Please notice this edit. In particular:

The article should tell the lay reader at the outset that mathematics is what it's about. "In algebra" suffices, as does "In geometry" or "In number theory" or "In arithmetic" or "In calculus". "In topology" does not.
Don't promiscuously italicize everything in non-TeX mathematical notation. Variables should be italicized; parentheses and digits should not.
Spaces should precede and follow "+", "≥", "=", etc.

Each separate map requires a template such as Template:Geobox locator Suffolk to work, and currently there are only 10 of them for the UK. Switching Infobox river to Geobox[edit]

Please can you stop converting {{infobox river}} to {{geobox}} as there is no consensus for this, you need consensus on the talk page of the article to perform this change.
