old 2005 post[edit]

This page has a large number of dead links, which I suspect are rather speculative in nature. Unless anyone has an on-going project of creating sensible stubs for this individuals, I'd propose to de-link the text. Alai 02:58, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Standardising spellings[edit]

There is a huge problem with old Irish names, namely that there is a proliferation of spellings for the same individuals. The list of kings typifies this problem. Take the name "Aed" for example. This is really a transliteration of the old Irish which had no letter h. In modern Irish, the name would be spelled Aedh. In English, this name is Hugh.

I propose that the list of names should be standardised according to the orthography of modern Irish. This is common practise in other countries. English monarchs are usually referred to by the modern English version of their names rather than the Danish/Old English/French/Latin forms those rulers would have used themselves. The case is similar in Germany.

Of course, individual websites of the kings in question could contain the variations of spellings to aid searching.

The standard spellings I use in my articles are the spellings based on the time period i which the ruler lived.i.e. old irish. I keep that standard for early christian rulers of ireland during the old irish period.Aedh in modern irish was Áed in old irishTimelinefrog (talk) 17:11, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I also think that proposal would create more confusion as historians of early irish history use the older spellings and most students of irish history would be searching based on this. also i am not sure that all old irish names have modern irish equivalents and editors would have to waste time figuring out what the modern irish name is for some of these names. why create more confusion. anglo-saxon kings are not given modern english names. who uses the name Aethelwulf anymore and how would you convert that to modern englishTimelinefrog (talk) 16:01, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"of Sussex"[edit]

I have noticed that at the bottom of the list of O'Conor Don's you have "Desmond O'Conor Don of Sussex". I have removed the bit saying "of Sussex" because as it stands it appears to be a title. It was then put back. You ought to know that the list of "chiefs of the name" where the information for this page comes from lists all the current chiefs and states where they resided in 1999. Other people had "of Tangiers, Morocco" etc. I don't think the "of Sussex" should be retained because it is not part of the man's name and has since been erroneously duplicated elsewhere as if this is a title the person holds when in fact it is not. For all we know Prince Des O'Conor may live somewhere else now! James Frankcom 16:26, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How could Fedlim Geancach Ó Conchobair be the king until 1475 if he died in 1474?
