No, they're not liquorice, though the flavour of aniseed is sort of similar. I much prefer aniseed though. And just today I had some sweets which were a mixture of aniseed and liquorice - yuk! Aniseed balls are hard and round, a bit like gobstoppers, but a bit smaller than the average marble. They're very difficult to get hold of these days. And they may just be a British thing.
