To be precise, HealthCanada is reporting 62 probable and 98 suspect cases of SARS. The WHO table only includes probable cases (except for the US as noted), and that explains why 160 isn't the number reported. -º¡º

Could you explain one of the phrases you use? What does 'when all karma has been burnt.' mean? I have very little knowledge of Buddhism so the phrase is unclear to me.

Your comments on editing pages are noted. I was aware I do this and having been trying to minimise edits, but it seems to something a personal style, so it will be difficult. I've only just started editing Wikipedia so it is part of the learning curve I would imagine.

Hello. You asserted that archaeologists know nothing of the Qu'ran as it is not within the scope of their work. This is untrue, as the search for and examination of manuscripts is of course a significant part of archaeology with cultures which possess writing, like Arabia of 1500 years ago. Are you familiar with the excellent article on Qu'ranic paleography which appeared in the Atlantic Monthy a couple of years ago? It dealt with the discovery of some Qu'ranic manuscripts in, I believe, Yemen which differ noticably from the redaction with which Muslims are acquainted with today. Kricxjo 02:17, 4 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. Buddhist pilgrimage sites

Hi Usedbook -

I have three questions about your identification of [Buddhist pilgrimage] sites:

1. You identify that "the Buddha spoke of holy sites that followers may seek." Where did the Buddha say this? For instance, in which sutta?
2. You write that one of the holy sites that the Buddha mentioned was Kusinara, where he passed away. Did he mention this before he passed way (for instance, somewhere in the Mahaparinibbana Sutta) or somehow after he passed away?
3. Your edit summary comment states, "Pilgrimage is central to the path." What path are you talking about? The Noble Eightfold Path?

Fantastic!!! Thanks for the education! Would it be okay if one of us (you? me?) added the Thanissaro (1998) reference in an endnote or in-line link at Pilgrimage#Buddhism? (By the way, I'm totally impressed that you were able to link directly to the paragraph in question!)

FWIW, not to put too fine a point on it, my concern about "central to the path" was not so much about the text you included and then subsequently deleted but about the so-called "edit summary" ("Pilgrimage is central to the path. removing some previous writing") that you wrote when deleting the modifier ("Although pilgrimage is not central to the path, ..."). Sounds like we're on the same page though.

Honestly, my initial question issued forth from my own Theravada householder practice. Seeing your reference made me wonder to what degree is pilgrimmage part of traditional householder practice, what's the source, what's the rationale. You've definitely helped a great deal with your answer here. Thanks so much again.

In addition, the Ven. Mettanando Bhikkhu article you referenced looks excellent! Maybe should be added as an endnote to the Wikipedia Mahaparinibbana Sutta article (which, now that I just looked at it, needs some development!) -- some day?

Einstein quotation

Hello Usedbook. I was researching the Einstein quotation you have on your user page to include in a forthcoming book on Buddhism, and found that Wikiquote flags it as misattributed. It occurred to me that you might (a) wish to know this (b) be able to research it a bit more. I shall try to track down the Helen Dukas book mentioned there. Incidentally, the grammar in the final sentence doesn't look like the work of a professional translator to me. That sort of thing is sometimes a giveaway. Vajrayogini

Please do not "fix" things you don't understand. While Vajrayogini has the word "yogini" included, in Tibetan Buddhism, the term yogini refers to a human female practitioner, while the term dakini refers to a female deity. The terms are not interchangable. Vajrayogini, like most higher tantric deities, is considered a Buddha, which you removed. I reverted you edit for these reasons. @Skyerise: Firstly, the message you've left here comes across as rude. We are all trying to understand here. The introduction at Vajrayogini requires a facelift to bring clarity to the reader and perhaps the Tara article can be of some inspiration. Vajrayogini is important in Vajrayana but the article needs to also reflect it's origins in India, how it is regarded in Hinduism, and especially other Buddhist traditions from a neutral point of view when possible. A section for etymology is missing. Vajrayogini acts as a meditation deity and, according to Britannica, the "female embodiment of the cognitive function leading to Buddhahood" - to bring a third party perspective. At the root is a yogini, regardless of one's spiritual practice or beliefs. One can easily say "Buddha and a ḍākiṇī" is contradictory also and for the record. I'm not interested in pursuing my own editing on the article so please be assured, I'm not here to argue. Vajrayogini is considered a female Buddha in Vajrayana (no problem) but, for many other practitioners, this is not the case or is slightly different and should be reflected in the article's introductory paragraph. The Tara article is a better example. I look forward to working with you on our article. Also, it was a quick edit as I was rushed off the computer for many hours (haven't made an edit since) so perhaps I should have waited and took more time for consideration. My apologies if my comment came off as rude. I've taken your suggestions and rewritten the lead. However, unlike Tara, Vajrayogini is original to Vajrayana and while inspired by Hindu tantra, is not derived from a pre-existing Hindu deity as Tara was. She is exclusive to Vajrayana and does not appear in non-Vajrayana traditions. One could also say that calling Tara both a Buddha and a Bodhisattva is contradictory, but it isn't. All Vajrayana deities represent both the path and the result. Thus Tara represents both the path of the Bodhisattva and the result of becoming a female Buddha, while Vajrayogini represents the path of the dakini and its result of becoming a female Buddha. Again, a yogini is a human practitioner of yoga, primarily understood as physical yoga such as Hatha yoga, and the article linked is pretty clear about that. Yogini is primarily used in a Hindu context: dakini in that context means something more like witch; in a Buddhist context, yogini may refer to a human female practitioner, but never to a female deity; deities are differentiated by using the word dakini. Sometimes female practitioners will call themselves "dakinis", but this is a misuse of the word. Skyerise (talk) 10:32, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
