Referring to Marseilles as a suburb of Chicago is a bit of a stretch- it took me an hour and a half to drive there from Naperville, which already is an hour from Chicago. Its like saying that Milwaukee is a suburb of Chicago- its not true.

Mar-Sails[edit]

Someone may want to include the way the town's name is spoken. Mar-Sails. Stargoat (talk) 21:02, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The History section says "pronounced the same as the French city". Is that incorrect? John Link (talk) 20:20, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Flood[edit]

Perhaps a section dealing with the record flooding of April 2013 is in order. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.30.71.158 (talk) 04:37, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Founder[edit]

The City of Marseilles was founded by Ephriam Sprague in 1832 when he moved to the area to establish a sawmill. It was he that named the city Marseilles because it was, to him, an ideal place for an industrial center, much like the industrial city of Marseilles, France. The next year, Lovell Kimball moved into Marseilles, and built a new dam just down river from Sprague, flooding out Spragues dam and mill, and ruining his business.

  • I found the above researching the Nabisco Bldg that is depicted in the town Post Office mural. I'll dig a little more digging....searching for "Sprague". . Buster Seven Talk 17:53, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • ".......until 1832 when Ephraim Sprague erected a dwelling and saw-mill, as well as built a dam across the slough, now the head and tail-race of the Land and Water Power Co. The dwelling stood near the present office of Mr. Newton Ward, ........." [1] "Mr. Sprague was succeeded by Lovel Kimbal, who settled here in 1894. He perceived the ultimate importance of the locality as a manufacturing point and determined to get control of the water power as well as the land about it. He bought out Sprague, whom he had forced to sell, and who left this part of the country vowing vengeance on the purchaser for, as he claims, some irregularity in the transaction.". Why the final "s"?[edit]

Why did Kimball add an "s" to the end of "Marseille"? John Link (talk) 20:22, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
