Kapitan Cina[edit]

Dowcet, I think you should return the title of the article 'Kapitan China' back to 'Kapitan Cina'.

Firstly, the reason you gave for changing it is that 'Kapitan China' is the more common English name. But this is an article about a Malay language title, not an English language title. Anyway, the title would be best translated in English into 'Captain of the Chinese', but that doing so would be high anachronistic. Most academic publications use 'Kapitan Cina'.

Secondly, if you google "Kapitan Cina" with the inverted commas, you would get 15,400 results. Googling "Kapitan China' only yields 6,540 results. Both historically and in contemporary parlance, 'Kapitan Cina' is used much more than "Kapitan China". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 180.252.44.222 (talk) 04:34, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Iwo page move[edit]

For future reference, pages should be moved using the "move" command at the top of the page and not by copying and pasting. A copy/paste page move leaves behind the page's history, which we are required to keep for compliance with the GFDL.

I've deleted your duplicate page at Iwo, Nigeria and created a redirect to Iwo. There's no pressing need to move the page that I can see, so I didn't. -- Cyrius| 03:06, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

It's okay, this can be fixed. Just hang on. -- Cyrius| 03:13, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Done. Iwo, Nigeria now has the revision history it should, and Iwo is a disambiguation page with the correct author in an edit summary. -- Cyrius| 03:15, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

International Worker's Order[edit]

Hi Brian,

I don't know too much about the organization, but I started an article on it during the late Presidential campaign since it was peripherally in the news. I will be very interested to watch the progress of your work on it, though.

Having grown up in New York City in a Democratic/socialist family, I have a general interest in socialist and labor movements, especially the huge variety there were and are in NYC, but not too much time to actively pursue the interest there days. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 05:22, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hi Brian[edit]

Not really sure, where I got it, was on the Web, but the actual pic file is associated with the Molly Maguires, of which [ POTW ] deleted it from the [article]. I really don't think that was necessary. User presently has an [ RFC ] against him. Go.com is probably where I got it from a while back. http://go.com somewhere. Pre-1900's. Re: Mahmoud Ahmedinejad[edit]

Hey Brian. I didn't insert that statement, I just reverted the unexplained removal of it by an anonymous IP. Aside from that, I somewhat agree with the statement because Ahmedinejad is well-educated, far more than previous presidents. But like I said, I didn't insert it. Thanks --a.n.o.n.y.m t 16:15, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh you meant the government itself. Well I think that would require some research although it is fairly known that Ahmedinejad looked over the past education for positions in his cabinet. I will see what I can find, but I wouldn't exactly mind rewording it slightly. --a.n.o.n.y.m t 16:22, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Brain. This is my final word on this whole subject. It's not really a positive thing to focus on, but let me know if there's anything else you want to know. --Aucaman 12:36, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for February 21[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 2013 Lahad Datu standoff, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Benigno Aquino (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

please integrate your addition re "Earliest arrivals"" with existing History section material on same matter[edit]

I'm not so sure that the Nootka Sound shipbuilding account needs its own section; it is unrelated also to later eras of Chinese/Chinese Canadian history and society. It was already covered in the History section, saying pretty much the same thing, and could/should be integrated there, with your further sources. As yet there is no article on the ship itself, so it remains a redlink there and on List of historical ships in British Columbia; though as I recall it was renamed and there may already be an article on the vessel under its further name(s).

Another item I contemplated including was the story of Fusang, but again it is not part of later Chinese-in-Canada history and though there are finds of Chinese coins and other goods in archaeological sites, there is no firm proof and most interpretations of that legendary-but-maybe-true story say Mexico, not BC, and it is unclear whether the Buddhist monk in charge of the expedition was even Chinese; he was from a monastery in Jilin (Kabul) and while his mandate was from the Chinese emperor of the time, there is no evidence that he was Chinese; but there is no supporting evidence for that story, either.Skookum1 (talk) 04:59, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I take the above to be with reference to Chinese Canadians in British Columbia? If so, feel free to just delete my contribution, or do whatever else you please. To be honest I really wrote that section with History of Chinese immigration to Canada in mind. I thought it would be useful in both places, but the BC article is a mess I'm not prepared to untangle. --Dowcet (talk) 14:46, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

George Counter[edit]

Everything in there is referenced by cited sources which are either books (eg. Marcus Langdon's Penang the Fourth Presidency, or contemporaneous sources i.e. 19th century periodicals or newspapers.

I have added the following to the talk page of George Caunter and repeat it here for the record.

It really, really upsets when someone makes a sweeping statement. Please specify the original research that is being alleged. Marcus Langdon's Penang The Fourth Presidency of India 1805-1803 contains an almost complete bio of Penang's 6th Governor. Justics James William Norton Kyshe's Cases Heard and Determined in Her Majesty's Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements 1808-1884 Vol I Civil Cases also contains substantial information about Caunter. To these I have added the info found in 19th century dailies (mostly Singapore newspapers) and periodicals (especially James Richardson Logan's Journal of the Indian Archipelago, &c. &c.). Per Wikipedia:No_original_research the phrase "original research" (OR) is used on Wikipedia to refer to material—such as facts, allegations, and ideas—for which no reliable, published sources exist. Please therefore point out which material—such as facts, allegations, and ideas— have no reliable, published sources. If you cannot do that, please remove your tag which, in the absence of your being able to support your Wikipedia:No_original_research allegation, would be untrue. Kapitan Cina[edit]

A few suggested improvements on this article:

  • The title of the article should be Kapitan Cina, not Kapitan China, as it is a Malay, not an English, title. Most academic articles use the term 'Kapitan Cina': for example, see The Kapitan Cina of Batavia, 1837-1942: A History of Chinese Establishment in Colonial Society by Mona Lohanda; Political Legitimacy in Southeast Asia: The Quest for Moral Authority by Muthiah Alagappa; and Golden Dragon and Purple Phoenix: The Chinese and Their Multi-Ethnic Descendants in Southeast Asia by Khoon Choy Lee.
  • I think the main body of the article should be separated from the list of individuals who held the position of Kapitan Cina: see my article, List of Kapitan Cina
  • The article needs more references, and a great deal of more work in general
