title[edit]

I've found a reference that lists him as Ferdinand Marle, vicomte de Lesseps... More on this as it develops.

dubedjammy: Thats not true, I found out resently that I am a descedent from this man and have also done alot of reasearch, his name is Ferdinand de Lesseps —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dubedjammy (talkcontribs) 23:28, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article is long...[edit]

so I added some sections. The Diplomatic section is disproportionately large. 69.181.82.221 20:07, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The present article does not look too long but there could be more written about effects on his reputation and legacy. The 'Legacy' section is confined to the use of his name as a code word by Nasser to take over the Suez Canal but this surely reflected a legacy of resentment among Egyptians, who have erected a memorial to workers who died in the Canal's building. His reputation in France differed between the Suez Canal and Panama Canal projects. I have read a Time magazine article in the 1970s (when the Treaty handing Panama's to Panamanian ownership was proposed) that whereas de Lesseps was known as 'the Great Frenchmen' for the success of the Suez project, the high death rate of workers on his Panama Canal project led to him being satirised as 'The Great Undertaker'.Cloptonson (talk) 06:39, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Family[edit]

This section contains lots of speculative comments about his descendent Alexandre de Lesseps that should be moderated/edited for content. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.91.225.218 (talkcontribs) of 16:34, 26 April 2008

It seems odd to include his children from the first marriage in the middle of the text, and the second separately below. Which child in ancestor of the current Count Alexandre ? -- Beardo (talk) 00:48, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Barthélemy and La Pérouse[edit]

... his uncle, Barthélemy de Lesseps, was the French chargé d'affaires. This uncle was an old companion of Jean-François de La Pérouse and the only survivor of the expedition in which La Pérouse perished

I strongly question this claim. Our article on La Pérouse says his ship was lost with all hands. If this was not the case, why was Barthélemy de Lesseps never questioned about the fate of the voyage and the circumstances of his survival? Sounds like a fish story to me, handed dwon from an avuncular uncle to a gullible nephew. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 11:07, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The end[edit]

Ferddinand died from malaria in 1941 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:8C5:180:1380:F11D:9B60:3285:B959 (talk) 01:40, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Incomplete sentence[edit]

Neither the opposition of Lord Palmerston, who considered the projected disturbance as too radical and a danger to the commercial position of Great Britain.

Starting as it does with 'Neither', this sentence looks an incomplete statement - it is devoid of a n/or indicating any other party to that opposition which this sentence leaves unidentified.Cloptonson (talk) 06:32, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Panama Canal[edit]

They had to abandon the sea-level plan for the canal, when they found it would have been flooded for half the year. Valetude (talk) 22:34, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
