Negative effect #1 - Lost users:

Honestly, I'm a little disillusioned with things, it seems like a lot of angst and energy is wasted on a few losers that are here trying to prove something or just disrupt things. (3) User:Tannin - One day about a week ago I spat the dummy out. I got so bloody tired of seeing so much good work destroyed by a tiny minority of well-known problem users that I quit.
(4) User:Baldhur (Aka, User:Cordyph) - left due to trolling; spends most of his time now on the german wikipedia.
(5) User:Zoe - left for over a year because of trolling. Return recently.
(6) User:JHK
(7) user:Optim - (no reason given; suspected due to trolling)

Negative effect #2 - Wasted Time and Energy:
The effort required to deal with a troll takes time away from making useful contributions. This is time and energy that would be otherwise spent improving articles. Just look a the sheer *size* of:

Negative effect #3 - Crowding out the Arbitration committee
The arbitration committee can only handle so many cases at once. Cases of obvious trolling (1, 2, 3, 4) tend to crowd out grievences between legitimate users (ala, RFAr/Avala) causing those problems to go unresolved and fester.
