Guile note[edit]

Is Guile from Chrono Cross really Magus? I've heard that that's just a myth. Someone with authoritative knowledge please answer and correct the article if necessary.jettofabulo 02:57, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

It's only ever insinuated, primarily in Schala's latter to Kid, which states that Kid has been accompanied by Magus recently. (Of course, if Guile isn't Magus, then what on earth would that comment be referring to?) -Sean Curtin 03:29, Nov 23, 2004 (UTC)
Most GameFAQs Chrono Trigger or Cross boardgoers will give you some nonsense explanation involving a so-called letter from Squaresoft. The truth of the matter is that Guile and Magus are related somehow, despite possible contradictions - and they are the same character, if not the same person. The problem lies in the relationship between Chrono Chross and Radical Dreamers - the programmers of CC weren't completely faithful in transferring the Radical Dreamers storyline and as such there are some confusing points. However, Magil/Gil from Radical Dreamers certainly is the same person as Magus, and as Guile is somehow the same person, perhaps in another dimension, as Magil/Gil, transitively the two must be related somehow. Also, consider the similarities: all three have flowing blue hair, use dark magic, hover rather than walking, etc. Also, both Guile and Magil have a mask on, and their names are somewhat related: Magus minus us plus gil is Magil, Magil minus ma plus u and e is Guile. The point is that some relationship exists. Anyway, sorry for the rant - GameFAQsers have annoyed me a lot on this topic. Andre (talk) 15:12, Nov 23, 2004 (UTC)

I would assume that Guile is not Magus because their spells are different, and they look too different. When I first played CC, I assumed Guile was a different character designed to make you feel a little nostalgic towards Magus. I recognize that they do look similar, and their magic is similar, but they looked different enough that I always thought they were different people. (Though Schala and Kid look very different, so I could easily be wrong.) --Cylith 13:43, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)Cylith

Although Guile technically isn't Magus/Janus, that was the original intent. There are several unused character design sketches for Guile, including some that are undeniably Magus. I could scrounge 'em up if anyone cares. 65.120.3.72 21:10, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Magus' picture[edit]

Just out of curiosity, why is Magus' picture the only one that's inconsistent with the other CT Character pictures? Magus' is the official PlayStation artwork, while all of the other ones are the SNES artwork. It really doesn't matter, but was there any reasoning behind this particular picture of Magus being selected over the SNES one? Peaceman 04:03, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I would assume [1] is considered the SNES artwork? I don't really like it that much but you're free to change it. When I went through and updated the characters I think I only used original Toriyama art that I instantly recognized but I don't think I added Magus' picture. I do like the PSX artwork better but if you want to show the SNES art I think it would be appropriate to get rid of one of the screenshots. Hansamurai 12:35, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, when I have time, I'll think about it. Peaceman 19:37, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good! hansamurai 飯侍 (burp) 21:23, July 25, 2005 (UTC)
I just removed the profile image taken from Chrono Resurrection... While it was definately a cool looking picture, I think in the interest of internal consistency we should keep them all with the original artwork. Lankybugger 19:13, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Magus's Real Name being a spoiler[edit]

I'm against the idea myself. If the real name of a character is a spoiler then there's no reason to have a "real name" section for any character, you could argue against Marle's, Robo's, and Frog's entries for the same reasons. The information is below the spoiler line, which is conveniently placed at the TOP of the article. And quite frankly, if someone is looking up Magus in an encylopedia, it's not too much to expect us to present the information in a straightforward manner. --BigCow 19:14, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Magus showing no emotions[edit]

Note that he is speachless for a while when his earlier self and Schala tells him (the prophet) to spare Crono and his party.

Yeah. That scene was probably the first real moment that 'Janus' came back inside of Magus so to speak. Up until then, the character known as 'Magus' was in essence a twisted figure whose personality had been entirely overrun by sheer hatred and sorrow, which is evidenced by just how very far he is willing to go in order to get his vengeance on the alien godbeast. When this kind of mentality of reckless and obstinate hatred and rage overcomes a being of Janus his power, it's not hard to see how and why the world of 600 A.D. was plunged into the nightmare that it was. Also, as that particular part of the storyline you mentioned goes on, you can gradually see Magus regain his old feelings of affection for his sister. In the Ocean Palace especially, when Schala collapses and the Prophet instantly reacts by approaching her slightly while uttering the words: 'Schala...!'. Basically, what you saw there was 'Magus' gradually becoming 'Janus' again for an increasing amount. The only thing the storyline never directly showed was the shock that Magus must have felt when he saw Schala again for the first time after having been thrown into the year 600 A.D., so many years ago from his own perspective.
It's this unusual and rich character development which makes me enjoy recruiting Magus inside the party so much each time I play through this game.

Young Janus' magical abilities[edit]

I recall thinking a long time ago that Janus had great potential all along, but hid this fact due to the way his mother used Schala for her power. He figured it better to be written off as insignificant than to be made a pawn. Is this in any way substanitated, or is it just a theory? --Onikage725

A few quotes in the game suggested something along those lines. A few of the enlightened ones said that Janus didn't exhibit any magical power, unlike Schala. And another one says that Melchior believed Janus would eventually become more powerful than all of them. You can interpret that to say that he was hiding his power, or that it simply hadn't developed yet.--BigCow 18:55, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This article is currently a testbed for a unified computer/video game character infobox, {{General CVG character}}. It uses a series-specific subbox, {{Chrono Trigger characterbox}}.

Input on this infobox would be appreciated; note that the addition of things that would be obvious to readers unfamiliar with Chrono Trigger (such as what game is involved and the character artist) is intentional. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 02:28, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Time to improve this sucker for GA. I'll be adding references and a host of information from the Compendium (all minding the rules of fancruft, of course). RD / CB are about to both be Good, and CT / CC are about to both be featured. The Chrono series is going to rule. --Zeality 02:41, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm at your disposal today[edit]

I'm working with the references. Also, is there any information from Toriyama or Kato regarding Magus' design we can include? Sir Crazyswordsman 17:34, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article revamp complete[edit]

What I need now is for everyone to scour the internet for mentions of Magus is out of universe events. If we can get some out of universe information, the article will improve greatly. --Zeality 20:51, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whoa, that was amazing. I guess when you're Chrono Compendium webmaster you know what is where, and know stuff that I don't. Sir Crazyswordsman 21:24, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Failed GA[edit]

This article fails GA primarily on point #3, comprehensiveness, due to a complete lack of information on the creation or design of this character, and little information on how popular this character is (right now, there's only the GameFAQs battles, not mentioned outside of the intro, and the 8BT mention, which seems largely trivial).

This really can't (or shouldn't) pass GA until it's half or less plot summary. Right now, the plot summary could be soaked waaay down and this could be merged into List of Chrono Trigger characters or Chrono Trigger. I know there has to be more to say about Magus than that. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 01:11, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is finding sources. Ask a random forum of fans who the baddest CT character is, and they'll name Magus. But no professional organization or publication has ever talked about this, and Toriyama is infamous for being tight-lipped and hidden from the public eye. So we're stuck. --Zeality 02:06, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Then you might be better off making Characters of Chrono Trigger, slashing the plot summary dramatically, and trying to get that through GA/FA. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 02:08, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, there are articles such as Selphie Tilmitt and Wakka which are much, much more suited for a list than Magus. Magus has MANY more sources than some of Nomuras characters. I know you guys are trying to go after the SNES characters first, but we want to make these articles actually decent. Frankly, I don't think we should butcher plot summaries just to put characters into lists. Lists are where we start, and when listclutter becomes a problem, we break it off. Lists aren't a goal, they're an origin. If someone made a stubby article first, that would become more suitable for a list. Sir Crazyswordsman 05:15, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Then merge those, too. I'm just telling you that you don't, right now, have the content for an article. Bloated plot summaries need to be reduced, not encouraged or protected, and when all you've got is plot summary, you don't have an article. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 06:41, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that Janus Zeal should be merged into this article, seeing as how it's the same character. -Timzor 22:55, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spoiler tag[edit]

This page really needs spoiler tag, it reveals magus identity in the first few sentances, that could ruin a game to somebody, to me moment of realisation who magus was, was the best moment in the game.. wikipedia shouldn't ruin this to somebody..--Defufna 13:10, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
