Life and Work[edit]

Why is there no mention of his publications Documents & even Acéphale. At least there should be a section for them at the end of the entry? Muserna Muserna (talk) 22:12, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Photo[edit]

That isn't a photo of Bataille but of Raymond Queneau, morons. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.200.107.179 (talk) 03:42, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stalinist?[edit]

An essay on Bataille over at NotBored! [[2]] makes the claim that Bataille eventually became a committed Stalinist, at a time when leftist intellectuals in France were finally beginning to disassociate themselves from the USSR's brand of state communism. Based only on a reading of his works, I find that a difficult idea to reconcile. Does anyone else have information or citations on this issue? --Erik.w.davis 05:15, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, for sure.[edit]

I've been working two years on the changement in Bataille's opinion about poetry and politics - specially on the gate between the thirties and the fourties. At least, anarchist but the religious way of thinking of Bataille can't be forgotten. Muychkine from wikipédia france.

The Not Bored claim refers to Bataille's Accursed Share, which is sympathetic to the problems faced by the Stalinist regime in its need to industrialize. Bataille got his information on Stalinism from Isaac Deutscher's work. Bataille was by no means "committed" to Stalinism at any time. In the '30s he was associated with the anti-Stalinist communists associated with Boris Souvarine, and after the '40s he had no direct political commitments. His sympathies appear to be more leftist than Camus, but less so than Sartre. See Michel Surya's biography. Aryder779 (talk) 20:04, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Blue of Noon[edit]

It's hard for me to see that Blue of Noon is "a much darker and bleaker treatment" than Story of the Eye. Is there some justification for that assertion? Crawlspace 19:59, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lord Auch[edit]

I fear the article is incorrect in stating that "Lord Auch" literally means "Lord to-the-shithouse". Aux chiottes is an exclamation meaning, literally to the shithouse. Auch is a phonetic abbreviation of this, which Bataille states (in the preface to Story of the Eye) is a pronounciation peculiar to a friend of his. Moe Aboulkheir 04:30, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the translation of part maudite from "Damned Part" to "Accursed Share." The former may be more literally accurate, but the latter is the title used in the English translation of the 3 volumes, is much more consistent with Bataille scholarship, and expresses more clearly the meaning the author conveys in the French title. --csloat 10:01, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Breton and surrealism[edit]

The article needs a section on Bataille's involvement with surrealism and the rift with Breton. --sparkit (talk) 21:41, Jun 12, 2005 (UTC)

Bataille and Sartre[edit]

I think this page needs to expound more on the relationship beween Sartre and Bataille beond Sartre's initial criticism involving Bataille's "mysticism." Sartre and Bataille share similar views (see their mutual defence of the 20th century American writer Henry Miller), but Sartre's "mysticism" charge is criticaly tied to Bataille comments on the uses and mis-uses of literature in "Literature and Evil." --c of cascadia 12:04, Nov 16th 2005 (UTC)

Lead section[edit]

Someone please add an English translation for the French phrase in the start of the article. --Jonik 08:22, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

secondary books[edit]

I deleted secondary works not in English - there's enough good stuff out there in English. maybe discuss here if you disagree. Poppi12 17:41, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. There are no policies that say references have to be in English. Some readers may be interested in getting a more complete bibliography. They are completely relevant and thus should stay. I've also moved your comment down to the bottom of the page, since the discussion usually proceeds chronologically, from top to bottom. -- noosphere 18:36, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, not sure. I've added more books and taken away the foreign ones. Georges Bataille: an intellectual biography is a translation of Georges Bataille mort a l'oeuvre anyway so no point in having both. There's plenty of stuff on the college de sociologie in the books in English so I'm not sure that the German book is really needed either. I don't know about wikipedia policy on books in foreign languages but my own opinion is that english is best and foreign books should only be there if they're really vital. Pronuciation[edit]

Can someone put the IPA for how his name is pronounced? I have only seen it written and never heard it said. thanks. 70.169.253.10 20:24, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bataille, for an IPA reference is pronounced | ba'tie |. Count of Cascadia 04:57, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Prononcez:[edit]

[bata'y] en français selon l'API. Muychkine de Wikipédia France.

Key concepts - "other"[edit]

I just had a go at fixing up this list, and I encountered a few problems. First, Acephality redirected to a page on cephalic disorders, which clearly has nothing whatever to do with Bataille's treatment of the matter. Therefore, I changed the link to [[Acephality (philosophy)|Acephality]], even though there is no such article as Acephality (philosophy) (though, perhaps, someone will write one). Heterogeneous matter redirects to Matter, and I left that one alone, because I cannot think of any similar concept to which the Bataillean concept should link. Lastly, Transgression is a dab page, so I changed the link to Taboo which seems the more appopriate link. Any thoughts on these changes? ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 03:34, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Base materialism[edit]

I have no big problem with the account of Base Materialism, but it desperately needs a citation so readers can tell whether it's authoritative or OR.KD Tries Again (talk) 18:27, 24 March 2008 (UTC)KD Tries Again[reply]

It looks like OR to me. I've never read any prominent literature that's compared Bataille to Althusser's aleatory materialism (though that's not a bad idea). Aryder779 (talk) 20:05, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

lingchi[edit]

Some of the linked essays make ill informed statements about Bataille and the Tears of Eros/lingchi photos. The CNRS, Lyon has a beautiful "Chinese Torture" site (linked to on slow slicing (lingchi) with a Jérome Bourgon essay and other very important stuff on Bataille.--Radh (talk) 04:00, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

for the next edit[edit]

Add deSade to influences, and to the influenced Nick Land and Camille Paglia. The later case can be verified in one of Salon columns. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.162.25.36 (talk) 05:53, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Theory of Religion[edit]

The book Theory of Religion hyperlinks to Theories of Religion, which has nothing to do with Bataille's book of the similar title.

School of Advanced Spanish Studies[edit]

I know quite a bit about Spanish higher education and have never heard of this (note that's there no link to it). Is the name garbled? deisenbe (talk) 13:58, 16 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Whoever Changed 'Base Materialism' to 'Base Consumerism' Needs to be Sacrificed[edit]

No expert on tautalogy here - especially in it's French/English variety - but no adequate or respectable reader of Bataille, nor Bataille himself, nor any translation of Bataille that I know of, has ever referred to Base Materialism as 'Base Consumerism.' Being a concept only subtly and esoterically alluded to by Bataille himself in a singular essay, it seems ludicrous to take such liberties with the terminology here. I get the conflation - especially in accordance with his proposals in The Accursed Share - but come on, y'all. Bataille's concepts are already fatally under appreciated, the least we can do is be faithful to his terms (or at least his heirs, in translation). Someone with more authority than me can change it, but... 24.12.181.175 (talk) 04:04, 10 September 2019 (UTC)SitOnAnEgg[reply]
